On April 1st, 1976, my incredible momma gave "birth" to me. She was in labor for 18 hours....and, only after she died did I learn the truth. I was always told that that we both almost died. I learned that my mom and I both flat lined .....they made my dad leave the operating room. Somehow......they saved both of us. And fast forward many many years. January 9th, 2021. My mom was doing in home hospic for lung cancer. In my living room, she passed away at 12:20 a.m. while I was holding her hand.

There was Dolly with a waist cincher no more than sixteen inches around and heels about two feet high and a wig that must have weighed twenty-three pounds. And she’s the only one who didn’t sweat. She never complained about anything. Never. The rest of us were always complaining." ROBERT HARLING "We were shooting part of the Christmas scene, and this was in the dead of August, and we were sitting out on the porch of Truvy’s beauty shop. We were waiting, and there was a lot of stop and start. The women were dressed for Christmas, and Dolly was sitting on the swing. She had on that white cashmere sweater with the marabou around the neck, and she was just swinging, cool as a cucumber. Julia said, “Dolly, we’re dying and you never say a word. Why don’t you let loose?” Dolly very serenely smiled and said, “When I was young and had nothing, I wanted to be rich and famous, and now I am. So I’m not going to complain about anything.”

When my daughter passed away, my friend called me and said she will be my "Ouiser" if I felt the need to hit anyone. That one comment made me realize that I had women in my corner! This is the best movie to show the power of friends and laughter to get through the ups and downs of life.

The nurses in the movie who turned off Shelby’s machines were the real “Shelby’s” nurses who took her off life support. Also, her mother wanted to be there during that scene and when they tried to talk her out of it, thinking it would be too hard for her, she said she wanted to see Julia get up out bed when it was over, something her daughter wasn’t able to do.

Awww really?? That’s so nice about the nurses. I don’t know how nurses do it- everyone I’ve lost who was in the hospital beforehand received such genuine love and care. I’ve seen more than one nurse tear up at the end. And so sweet about the mom ❤️

As a (Type 1) diabetic, I can tell you that Shelby's hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) was 100% real. Low blood sugars can hit incredibly fast. Simple sugars like juice or full-calorie sodas are the best at-home treatments. We always keep full-calorie soda in the house. A few years back, my sugar was 26 (normal for a diabetic is 70-130/150). Incoherent, sweating, telling my mother and husband to GET OUT while my husband was trying to get me to eat PB (I didn't). Firefighters were called and they gave me what amounts to a sugar bomb. Sugar bombs are used by medical professionals to get a diabetic's sugars up in a hurry. That didn't work, so a paramedic asked my mom if she had a full-calorie soda. Mom got one, she helped me drink it, and while the FD and paramedics were there, I started to feel better. I remember my sugar, before they left was 56 and rising. Now 56 is still low, but coming from 26 was a huge improvement. If the low is not treated in a timely manner, it can lead to an ER trip (at least). Diabetes is a sucky disease. It messes with everything. Circulation (neuropathy is common), heart, eyes, teeth with amputation, DKA (Diabetic ketoacidosis) and coma being extreme complications, but with a good diet and exercise plan, diabetes can be very well controlled. Heck, my a1c went from 7.2 in December to 6.8 last month.

Thank you so much for sharing, Liz! I can’t even imagine how horrifying that must have been. My great-grandmother was blind from diabetes complications, but I only have vague memories of her. This movie was the first depiction I’d ever seen of diabetes side effects.

@@DavidvsFilm My maternal grandmother was Type 1 and by the time she was diagnosed, she was legally blind. The doctor said that she probably had diabetes for decades. She hadn't been to the doctor in 40 years. If you, or anyone else, start being thirsty for no reason, peeing all the time (from the thirst) and losing weight for no reason (from the peeing), get to the ER ASAP. My husband experienced all three and I tested his sugar after a week, because he didn't tell me until then. His sugar was 561. He's a Type 2 diabetic. We joke now that I kissed him and gave him the 'beetus. 🤣

Yes! I’m type 2 brittle diabetic and have had a few period were my sugar drops anywhere from 19-67…which is highly unusual for a type 2. I’ve even spent up to a week in ICU because it would not stay up. It is a very complicated disease that many do not take serious enough.

I wasn't taking care of myself like I should, but I went from an a1c of 11.4 in April 2021 to 6.8 last month. I *hate* this disease. I can't feel my toes. Neuropathy. Sliced the bottom of a toe open last Thursday and didn't know it until my husband saw blood on the carpet. My kidneys are damaged, and now my eyesight is messing with me. Diabetes and Fibromyalgia (which I also have) are two things I would never wish on anyone.

I totally agree that Daryl Hannah did an amazing job. When you think of her in the 80’s you think of her being the dazzling eye candy in Splash, Roxanne, Wall Street & Legal Eagles. But in this, she completely disappears into the role & plays a painfully awkward & shy character far removed from her previous glamorous roles. Glad you picked up on her performance too as it’s somewhat overlooked.

Fun facts: The doctors and nurses who treat Shelby in the hospital are the same ones who worked on the writer's sister in real life, and his mother insisted being on set when they shot the scene shutting the machines off, because Julia Roberts would still get up out of the bed when it was all over. When M'Lynn rushes to Aunt Fern's just after, the baby who runs at her is Sally's 3rd and youngest son Sam, who was about 18 months old when the film was made, and the director knew he'd run to her naturally. Sam is gay and posted a tweet several years ago about people asking him if he thought being gay was due to nature or nurture, and he answered "nature," then followed up with a picture of his mother hold him at the wrap party with the other leading actresses, adding "and this, definitely this."

When my brother got married he asked our father to be his best man. At the end of the wedding the minister said that my brother could kiss his bride he did just that for a bit longer than technically necessary in Dad's opinion. My poor father, who was almost completely deaf in one ear and had a profound loss in hearing in the other, thought he whispered, "That's enough, Son." Instead he said it so loud everyone in the church heard him! Well, everybody but my brother who didn't hear him at all! I think about that every time I see the wedding scene.

I drove out there from Georgia to visit my best friend from high school who was at Fort Polk. 1991 this was and said friend was in the Army. I will never forget the sensation of stepping outside, freshly showered and groomed, to instantly breaking out a sweat. Agree totally that Darly Hannah nailed her role perfectly.

When President Roosevelt was asked to get his daughter under control this was a girl who once jumped clothed into a pool on a congressional trip Roosevelt said "I can run the country or run Alice I can't do both." Also, when Bobby Kennedy mentioned her many years later that the dip in the pool she took once on a congressional trip must have been scandalous she said "No, If I had jump in naked that would have been scandalous". This is the same woman who got pissed at her husband campaigned against him and when he lost by a little over 100 votes she said "The Roosevelt name was worth a hundred votes I cost that election remember that.".

This movie came out around the time I was told I should not have children. That I wouldn't be able to safely carry to term. I was about 19/20 & had other plans. I was a lot like Shelby in many ways then. My mom was so much like M'lynn. This was a very special movie for us to understand each other. And our /her friends. 11 pregnancies/1 live birth & I am still here and kicking. Thanks science. Nowadays, I relate most to Truvy.

I remember being able to smoke everywhere! There's a photo of my mom the day before I was born and it's the trifecta of what NOT to do when you're pregnant; she's got a cigarette in her mouth, a beer in her left hand, and bowling with a 16lb ball! It's my favorite picture! When my oldest sister died of a heart attack, I'll admit that I kinda pulled an Olympia Dukakis moment, by grabbing my other sister and offering my mom to take a swing at me. It did make her giggle. Instead, she wanted to go skydiving. So an 80 year old woman, a 40 year old woman (me), and a 6 year old boy (my son) all went skydiving 2 weeks after my sister died. Part of me thinks that my mom thought if we got up high enough, she'd be able to see my sister again.

I love watching people react to this movie. It's seriously one of the most underrated films. When it came out, the awards shows basically ignored it. Julia Roberts was nominated for an Oscar but lost... no one else even got a nomination, nor was it nominated for Best Picture. Sally Field should have been recognized for sure, but really the whole cast was amazing. Also I think one of the most underrated characters here is Spud - Truvy's husband. He doesn't say much and they don't spend a lot of time on their marriage... but it's obvious how detached he is and how underappreciated and unrecognized she feels. The scene when they are getting ready to go to the funeral and he says he might want to go with her "if that's okay." That is a scene that always gets me.... it's the moment he realizes how neglectful he can be. It took a big loss for him to reevaluate some things in his own life... and we see that things are different for them after that.

I had always assumed Sally had gotten a nomination for her role in this. That is a straight up crime that she wasn't, you just blew my mind. The funeral scene alone is worthy of her getting a nomination at the very LEAST. The raw emotion and the gambit of emotions she goes through in that scene is so real and relatable. She endeared me to her for life because of her performance in this film. And you're right, Spuds arc in this film is seldom talked about, but it's so important, and is very heartwarming when he is able to finally wake up after Shelby's passing, and realize he hasn't been treating himself or Truvy the way he should be. Sam Shepard was such a wonderful actor, he had such a charisma about him, and was a fantastic playwright too.

Lived in Louisiana most of my life. The scene where M'Lynn drives down highway 1 headed to Aunt Fern's to pick up Jack tears me apart every time I see it. I have driven that way dozens of times in my life, and these characters could all be members of my own family. I attended Northwestern 3 semesters and crossed those Cane River levees many times. It makes me so proud that this story was born out of our state.

@@DavidvsFilm I'm originally from Sabine Parish, around the Toledo Bend Lake area; but lived in Shreveport for a number of years. Graduated from LSU-Shreveport and from Northwestern in Natchitoches. Worked for a short while as a nurse at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center. Mariner's is still open and going strong in Natchitoches. In 2020, it almost closed permanently due to the pandemic; but, thankfully the owners were able to turn operations over to another family who expressed interest in running the restaurant. Granted, they added their own touches; but, basically kept the same delicious, southern cuisine that keeps patrons coming back. The transition of ownership was fairly smooth and things ran great for a while; until a devastating fire gutted the restaurant. Being resilient, the owners stepped up, renovated the restaurant, and got it back operational again. So, if you're ever in the area, stop by...the food is still great and the cocktails are still refreshing inside the Cove.

This movie means too much to me. As a kid I had this memorized. My family quoted it constantly. In high school, I performed scenes from it. And would you believe it, as an adult, I developed diabetes, unexpectedly had a kid, lost the functioning of my kidneys, and am currently on dialysis. Trying to live a normal life and raise a kid is hard but man this movie reminds you why we live life to the fullest. Can't help but love it. Btw bless y'alls heart for using toilet paper!!!!

But... laughter through tears. 😉 That scene at the cemetery is gold. "HIT HER! KNOCK HER LIGHTS OUT!" made me cry laughing. So... full range of emotions with this film, for sure. 😊 Another thing's for sure - Sally Field acted the HELL out of that scene. I lose it every time she starts crying and wanting to know why this happened to her daughter. GUTTED.

Dolly didn’t win an Oscar but she was nominated for Best Original Song and Best Original Score for “9 to 5”. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, Best New Star in a Motion Picture and Best Song. She was nominated for another Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”.

For the record, yes, the family minister is played by Robertt Harling who wrote the play about his sister Susan. The nurses that attended to "Shelby" were also the nurses to Susan in her final days. GREAT video by the way.

I saw the play before I saw the movie, at The Alley Theatre, the Equity regional repertory theatre here in Houston, in 1989. They did it as soon as they could get the rights, towards the end of the off-Broadway production's run (it didn't open on Broadway until 2005) and just before the movie was released. It's also been staged in foreign countries; I would love to see how this translated to the stage in France or Japan.

you asked about how much of the dialogue is actually in the script. this script is almost word for word from the play it is based on. a few lines were dropped, moved, or given to other characters. but that was mainly because they expanded the cast beyond the core 6 women. also, the play takes place exclusively in the salon, so they were able to use visuals instead of lines to tell the story. if you ever have the chance to see the play, i recommend it. it was on broadway about 10/15 years ago. christine ebersole was amazing as m'lynn. the whole cast was great. delta burke as truvy, lily rabe as annelle, rebecca gayheart as shelby, frances sternhagen as clairee, & marsha mason as ouiser.

Born and raised in the South yet never had a mint julep. But I WAS one of those kids who ate at least a couple of the Easter eggs after the hunt. David, your knowing looks at the camera after, um, misdirecting Marc made me laugh out loud. It's a cup of flour, a cup of sugar,and a cup of milk. You drain the juice of the fruit cocktail and add it to the previous three. Mix really well, then set aside. You take a stick of butter and melt it in a square baking dish. Add the fruit cocktail, I like peaches instead, and then pour the flour sugar milk mixture over the top of the fruit. Put in a 350 oven till brown and bubbly, about an hour and fifteen minutes. It will taste much better. 😊

Yes the funeral scene makes me tear up but the scene with the baby crying while Shelby is passed out was so scary to me after I had my son. It was one of my biggest fears that something would happen to me while I was alone with him.

I remember smoking in hospitals. I had open heart surgery several times as a child in the 70s and 80s. Lots of time in the hospital and smokers in the family. I remember seeing nurses smoke in the halls. Then it was confined to waiting rooms. Then it was one specific room on each floor. Then one waiting room on the main floor. Then an outdoor smoking area. Then the smoking area was removed and people smoked in the parking lot. Then no smoking on hospital grounds.

Loved her!! Anyway, also back to childhood.. when I was really young I remember smoking indoors pretty much everywhere. But not in hospitals. And that’s weird because Steel Magnolias was filmed around that time about an hour from where I live. Maybe I just didn’t notice, but I really don’t remember.

Shelby is what is referred to as a brittle/insulin dependent diabetic. I had a friend once who had this form of diabetes. But my friend’s low_blood sugar levels were never that bad (as far as I know anyway) because anyone who knew her well enough could tell when her blood sugar levels were low because she kind of seemed to be spacing out and when you would try to tap her on the shoulder and call her name she wouldn’t respond and she would also start crying softley and the first person to notice that she was having blood sugar levels would shout out that she was having blood sugar issues and then someone would come over to the first aid room and help her check her blood sugar levels and they would give her some juice and something to eat and would sit with her until she was better.

Loved watching you react to the movie. "Steel Magnolias" is a roller coaster ride of emotions. This is one of my favorite movies: the story line is great, there are so many funny moments and one-liners thrown in here and there, the back and forth banter between Drum and Weezer and Weezer and Claree is priceless, the unspoken camaraderie between the ladies........it just all works so well and says much more than could be conveyed in wordy script. It's a story well told , full of laughs and tears, warmth and angst; and I really like how we are taken through the years by just using seasonal decorations. You did a great review of the movie. So glad you enjoyed it so much.

When this movie came out my grandpa was dying of end stage renal disease. He had type 1 diabetes and he was also an alcoholic (WWII vet). He died of heart failure days into 1990. This movie is a hard watch for me because I associate it with my grandpa. He had his problems but he was a great man and I still miss him.

Hello David and Marc. I haven't seen many channels react to this movie so when your reaction popped up as a recommendation, I wanted to check it out. I'm SO GLAD I DID! I've since gone back and checked out a few more of your reactions (Lord of the Ring, Jaws, The Princess Bride, The Thing) and I've really enjoyed them. Your tone and commentary is right up my alley. I'm sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but speaking for myself...I love it! I'll definitely be making my way through your reaction playlists over the next few weeks. Regarding this particular film, it's been a long time since I've seen it so it was fun to revisit through your reactions. The dialogue and chemistry between the actresses was so good. And given it was made in the late 80s, when not many movies with female led casts were made...it did very well. Also...don't worry about crying during reactions. These aren't just for laughter and screams. You'd be surprised how many of your viewers will be crying along with you when you watch movies like this. 😉 Looking forward to what you do next.
