@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Sally's a really powerful actor. She has such a calm and authoritative presence throughout the entire film, but in that moment she let it all go and it felt like she was reaching through the screen and making you feel her anguish. Every time I see it I feel an adrenaline rush, it's like being frightened or exhilarated. I felt a similar response in The Two Towers when Theoden mourned over the grave of his son: "No parent should have to bury their child."

It’s such a powerful moment. Shirley McLain has a similar moment in Terms of Endearment when she’s trying to get the nurses in the hospital to give her daughter her pain medicine. Her frustration seems to come off the screen and choke you.

Omg that am sorry is shocking that he remarried so quickly after her death has made me really hate him. Shelby seemed to point out that they were having a baby to make their marriage last and make him happy hence her mothers reactiion .when she was telling her mother about the baby If as a mother & family of " shelby" would truly find that act unforgivable cause 6 months to me makes me think he was playing outside of their marriage. After literally sacrificing herself to make him happy by giving him a child that's really shocked me. I would be really angry with him and her ( the obvious mistress) sorry but that's what it seems to say to me. I can't believe he did that to her as it shows no respect whatsoever to her or her memory. What a vile man. In my eyes he is. I never knew that part and am glad they left it out of the movie & play then to have her son call his new wife mama is even worse.

@@micheletrainor1601 My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer less than a year after our son was born. Thankfully, she didn't go into a coma before dying, but she did go through many rounds of chemo. Her cancer metastasized to her bones and brain, and she died a month after our son's 5th birthday. She died in my arms, at home under hospice care. I got remarried less than a year later, to a women I barely knew while I was married. She was a single parent also. My son was coming up on 6, and her son was 3. I'm sure some folks judged me for getting remarried that quickly. But I wanted a mother for my son, and hers needed a father. Today, they are both college graduates, , both married, and I have 5 grandchildren. I have no regrets, but I still miss my soulmate, who died a month before my 27th birthday.

One of the things that makes this story so much more frustrating is know that the real Shelby’s husband remarried 5 months after her death. It’s what motivated her brother to write the story. He wanted the baby to know what his mother had done for him. It’s an incredible movie and the cast is amazing. I’ve seen in many times over the years. Such inspiring everyday women supporting each other!

Why should the fact he remarried 5 months later be an issue? There is no rule about how long mourning is to last - besides - Shelby let us know that she wanted the baby to "improve things" so it sounds like they had marriage issues already.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O. 11 ай бұрын
oh Jeanb.5405, getting married 5 months later is BAD. Even a deep cut on the leg needs more time to heal than that. Let's stop with this not putting a time on mourning - doctors put a time on healing ALL THE TIME. Give yourself time to heal. Don't rush things, oh it gonna take at least 12 months before he can use that arm again, etc. 5 months is wayyyyy to soon to remarry after losing 'the love of your life'. Down right shame!

Is that an issue? Wouldn't the person who passed away want their living partner to live on and keep going instead of being depressed and catatonic for years? Everyone has their own time, some people need years others need months. You can't assume and force the time someone needs to heal on them

A few Steel Magnolias facts... ***The preacher who marries Shelby and Jackson is Robert Harling the playwrite who based Steel Magnolias on his Mother, her friends and his late sister Susan. ***Darryl Hannah was originally cast as Shelby but preffered the role of Annelle thinking it more a challege for her. Giving Julia a chance to get an Oscar nom. ***Sally Field used method acting in the graveyard scene. Substituting her sons name instead of "Shelby" in rehearsal to work herself up emotionally. ***The late great Bette Davis was very vocal about wanting the role of Ouiser. (I almost wish it had happened but she would have wiped everyone else off the screen!) ***The director told Dolly Parton she looked like she didn't know what she was doing...she told him that she didn't... but he hired her so it was his job to make her look like she knew what she was doing.(Pure Dolly sass!) ***Olympia Dukakis was panned critically in Boston for being too much of a New Englander for such a southern story. (I remember reading this review with disagreement) ***They tried a Steel Magnolias TV series with Cindy Williams as M'Lynn it didn't fly...but you can find the pilot out here! I love Steel Magnolias I've directed the stage play 4 times I am always touched by it. Thanks for this one Kemi! ❤

The play was performed in the 90s by the high school my twin sisters attended, and one twin played Shelby, the other twin played M’Lynn. My mom and I were in the audience, and we were absolutely destroyed by the performance. They're not fighting. They're all old dear friends and that's just how they interact with each other. It's an American thing. You say the worst things to your friends. And these Southern ladies would never say such things to strangers or people they didn't like. The zingers were the best part of this movie. Although, it must be said, the ability to deliver the nastiest cut-downs in a sweet tone is a Southern lady specialty. After all, if a Southern lady says bless your heart, she might be saying you're not too bright. Or she might be saying you gave it a good try, but it wasn't good enough, or something similar.

Unbeatable cast and amazingly drawn characters. But Claree will always be my favorite! I'm still quoting lines from this movie 30-some years later. The friendship Claree and Weezer have is so much like my best friend and I, and hopefully many others share this. You can say absolutely anything without offending but will defend each other to the end. And you know if you have a problem at 3 am, you can call them and they'll be there.

One of the cultural things to help put the relationships into perspective for you is that women in the South at that time were expected to be pleasant and polite and not show any anger. That these women seemed to be "nasty" to each other was showing just how close they were. They were being completely emotionally honest with each other in a way they couldn't be anywhere else in their lives. No masks, no facades.

I love this movie so much even if I cry every time. The guy that wrote the story this was based on is in the movie as the preacher you see him at the wedding and funeral. My and I always joke how we are going to be Ouiser and Clarice when we get older.

This movie hits me so hard now . Christmas night 2019 I had to sign those papers to take my son off life support. As a momma you never expect to have to bury your children . It’s just not suppose to work like that . Your children are the ones that literally know your heart from the inside out . Loved your reaction to this movie

You have to remember, when this was done dialysis was fairly new, only about 10 years or so. They didn't have the science then. By the way, the writer "Shelby's" brother was the minister at the funeral

Her mom could not have done any more than she did - we all live with a conscience, a free will, and the result of our actions. Shelby should not have tried to be a working woman and a mom - when the Dr advised she not even work or have a baby - instead she does both things.

They have been knowing each for years, so Truvy knew also she but what they didn't know was that having children could be detrimental to her body, fatally so, until Shelby's Mom informed them of how dangerous it could be.

One more beautiful Kemi reaction to a wonderful movie with an extraordinary cast. My sister and I have MS, and when my sister decided to get pregnant at the age of 32 because she wanted to have a baby of her own, not an adopted one, I felt so much fear like never before in my life. There was a real chance of losing my sister and my best friend. My "little" sister means the world to me. In the end, all went well and now her son is 21 and seems to be healthy. But I will never forget how much I`ve been suffering through all the 9 months of her difficult pregnancy. I knew that having a child of her own meant more to her than her own life, and I also knew that I had to respect and accept her decision. This movie made me remember the anxiety and angst of that time. At times life can be hard as hell, and that`s why it is so important to see, collect, and embrace all the beauty it has to offer. Because, let`s be honest, sometimes people cling to a straw to survive another day.

For those who don't know much about kidney transplants. The live donor can live a very long time with only one kidney. That is why the Donate Life organization uses the phrase "Share Your Spare". My son waited 3 years on dialysis for his kidney transplant at the age of 28. His donor, who I like to call our Angel, was about 35. After donating her kidney, she left the hospital 2 days later, and 8 weeks after that, she finished her first half marathon. My son has had no issues with his kidney and the donor is still very healthy. Shelby's body had already been through so much and she already had a compromised immune system from being diabetic since she was a small child. BTW, EVERYONE should be a registered organ donor.

This movie, I have my own DVD and watch it at least twice a year. Sally Fields breaks me every time with the scene at the cemetery. Brings ups my loses, my fiancé, my brother, my father. Each loss is a different pain and a different reaction to that pain. My heart has old scars.❤️‍🩹 but we go on and remember them, like in the movie Coco, as long as we remember them, they’ll live on.

Look, I know this is based on real people. People don't want to talk negatively, but I was on M'Lynn'a side. I watched it young and still feel the same way at 37. Shelby was selfish, which she had every right to be, but in a way that still hurts others. Why have a child too carry a version of you on when you can't be there for the child. Shelby went in knowing should could die giving birth, which I think is such a waste. Based on the movie, Shelby didn't wait more than a year or two before giving up on adoption completely. I think that is my main reason for not being on Shelby's side. I could say so much more, but that really is the short of it.

Yup, if I ever need to have a good cry but it won't come, this is one of my go-to movies. It IS a beautiful story, so sad, so funny, and so real. Not sure how real the dialogue is; I'm not Southern, and in the movies everyone always has the perfect comeback. I will say that I couldn't watch this movie for about five years after I lost a close friend to diabetic complications, but it's still one of my favorites.

Yes, Truvy knew about Shelby being a diabetic. They all gossip together. They know everything about everyone. Shelby had too much insulin so her blood sugar dropped. Truvy had candy. They all knew but Annelle. Hence when she said “should I call an ambulance?”, they all said “no”. Truvy was shocked because it came on fast that time. She knew to call M’lynn over as soon as she saw her reacting. They’ve all known Shelby since she was a child. Doesn’t take away from their bond. I can see how it may have been misinterpreted. The man who officiated the wedding was the real life brother of the real “Shelby”. And, Sally Fields…finest acting ever. I’ve seen it a million times, and I still bawl my eyes out every time I see it. I have one of every single one of those friends. I hope you liked the movie. It’s hard to watch, but a heartfelt story.

Your words about Mum's and how they are taken for granted and never get the chance to rest or fulfil their aspirations really hit hard for me... Lost my mum when I was 27, 6 weeks after my first son was born. This was 1992. There's not a day goes by that I don't think about her. She was wonderful. Her favourite song back then was For your Babies by Simply Red. I still tear up when I here it. Thank you for your beautifully articulated sentiment about the most important woman in our lives. I needed a good cry and apparently it was today... Bless you for your thoughfulness 🙏
