Can't lie, when Davy Jones died, I kinda felt sorry for him, because he was only 'evil' because he had, or thought to have been, betrayed by Calypso, and he was stuck with a duty he never asked for. Plus, apart from being a bit sadistic, before Jones was under the control of the E.I.C, what did he do that was actually bad? He actually rose the black pearl for Jack, with a debt because it was no mean feat. He only really became evil during at world's end, probably because of how manipulated and frustrated he was from everything controlling him

Well he did sick the Kraken on the Turkish boat and the Edinburgh Trader when looking for Jack/Will. That was pretty evil, the sailors were caught in the crossfire. But I suppose Jack broke the deal and will knew and had the key (if I’m not mistaken) He also had the Christian killed when we first met him, as well as executing the remainder of the Edinburgh Traders crew.

Jones became a cruel man but it wasn’t all hid fault, in the end I think he would find redemption in the afterlife. His life was destroyed by a god who treated mortals as her pets.

By film five (co-written by Rossio) that escape clause all goes out the window, too.

DG [SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN POTC 5: DMTNT] I believe that Jones is back because of Jack betraying the compass. Remember that when you betray it, your worst fears come after you. Jack feared Salazar, but deep down he was traumatized by Jones, that's why he is back. The reason he is an octopus even though the trident was destroyed breaking all curses is because Jack only knew him when he was cursed, and since he feared his cursed self, the compass brought that back. Its kinda like terror took on the form of Davy Jones, it's sort of a memory turned reality, your worst fears coming alive.

I'd argue that Davy Jones' actions and motivations are too complex to really define him as simply evil or broken. Considering the capricious and unempathetic/unsympathetic actions of Calypso, and how she betrayed the trust of a mortal who loved her so much as to take an accursed task, I don't blame him for becoming a monster. But his actions are still his own: he put aside the duty of ferrying the dead for the desire to make Calypso suffer, he still controlled the seas and the creatures in it in such a way as to deliberately make men suffer as much as the goddess he wished to be with did, and he delighted in acts of targeted malice and cruelty and preyed on people's fears to create a cursed, enslaved crew. That's truthfully evil in its scope, In reality, both Calypso and he are two sides of the same coin: the cruelty and malice of mankind, and the uncaring, harsh, ever-manipulative nature of the sea itself. Davy Jones is a good case study into how many can be pushed to do horrible things in the name of petty vendetta and emotional damage brought about by trusting the wrong people.
