How does a new $700 gaming laptop compare to a graphics card that's been the top-dog on steam for all of time?

i'm not 100% certain but I think you need "JEDEC" memory to make it run at 3200mhz without having the XMP option in bios.
@NikiDaDude

Yes this is the reason, the RAM has to be rated at 3200MHz by SPD/JEDEC specs, otherwise it won't run at 3200 unless the BIOS has an XMP toggle.

It most likely has to be 3200mhz Cl22. I replaced an 8gb 3200mhz stick with a 2x8gb/3200mhz CL22 kit of G.Skill in a laptop with a Ryzen 5 4600h/GTX 1650 that has no XMP settings in BIOS and it runs at 3200mhz. So glad I didn't ty the CL16 kit!

Same for the Pavilion desktop I bought with a 5700G. It had a single 16GB stick of JEDEC 3000MHz. It wouldn't let me use dual 3600MHz sticks at anything but the base speed.

That's an impressive laptop configuration for the price! Also I like that when you open the laptop from the bottom, you have access to the harddrives and ram without having to take the keyboard, trackpad out while disconnecting the most fragile ribbon cable connectors imaginable. With that said, good job HP, let's just hope this laptop isn't made of the cheapest components that die out after 1 to 3 years like most other HP products.

Ram problem is just that Ballistix ram is rated 3200 when overclocking with XMP, which isn't well supported on many laptops. All Ryzen based (4000 & 5000 mobile cpus) laptops I have seen requires JEDEC rated memory to run on advertised speeds. Ballistix sells 2666Mhz JEDEC memory as an 3200Mhz "XMP tested". JEDEC timings and speeds comes from SPD ROM chip on memory itself. At least Kingston have 3200Mhz JEDEC spec memory packages and have 3200Mhz JEDEC timing information on SPD ROM, while Ballistix has only 2666 JEDEC settings on SPD ROM. I have been on that trap too... And cursed this a long and hard.

If you are in the market for one of these EVGA 1060s Get the EVGA 1060 SC they only boost a little faster, but the heatsink on the GPU is much better, the Fan an the plastic shroud looks the same, but the heatsink isn't a Aluminum block of depression like it is on a normal 1060. 1060SC can stay a lot cooler and keep its Core clocks higher underload.
@amnottabs
@amnottabs 3 жыл бұрын
I know it doesn't have the same horsepower but one of my computers have a 1050ti with that same shroud and I think the heatsink is a chunk of pure aluminium without cooper plate and it barely goes over 60C when running at 100% (which is most of the time honestly)

I have this same laptop but with a 10th Gen intel Core i5 and a GTX 1650 ti. I got that exact same RAM kit sent to me from Crucial (was an RMA) and I too ran into the speed issue. Upon looking it up, "JEDEC" memory is needed to run at the higher speed in a proprietary motherboard like what HP has in their laptops. This was the laptop was recommending for a friend who's kinda in the working class side of things yet still wanted to game and do work more quickly, in comparison to her old hp pavilion back in 2014. Glad to know you've reviewed it

I actually own the HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec2253ng, replaced the WLAN module against a more relyable AX200, and I bought the G. Skill Ripjaws F4-3200C22D-16GRS which run relyable at 3200 MHz. Using AMD APU Tuning Utility I could raise the TDP safely to 55 Watts.

I used to have a very similar laptop. It was an hp pavilion with a 1050ti and an 8th gen i5. I only had it for a year, before I had to get rid of it. It had WAAAY too many issues. It overheated, under performed, had a ton of pre-installed hp programs that heavily altered the speed of the overall device (which was unable to be uninstalled), countless issues with the gpu/cpu. Plus the hinge wore down over the course of the year. I took my laptop to a ton of different people, and none of them managed to fix it. Who knows, hp could’ve changed, but I kinda doubt it. But to anyone looking to buy an hp pavilion, don’t.

I'd be mildly interested in seeing the performance difference between that 1060 and the SC version which has a substantially better cooler, despite looking the same from the outside. I can say from experience though, you'd probably want to change the thermal paste. I had one and it ran hot as balls and loud as hell when new. A quick thermal paste change dropped the temps and fan speeds significantly. Naturally, it boosted way higher too.

The problem you are having with the RAM with the Ballistix kit is that it runs at 3200 MHz(MTs), CL16, @ 1.35v and that particular HP laptop JEDEC settings are meant for 3200MHz(MTs) CL20 @ 1.2v. You may want to look into a different kit, I am aware HyperX has kits of Dual Rank, 3200MHz(MTs) CL20 @ 1.2v which should increase performance accordingly.

Got this laptop on a black friday sale last year for only $500.00USD (I knew this was a steal), it does get very warm, but has played pretty much everything I want to play. I tend to stick to games that are a couple years older (2015-2018) and is pushes right through them.

This is reassuring to hear. I recently got back into gaming and I picked up a used OP-LP2 for 400 with the GTX 1060. I had no idea the capabilities for this card and I'm reassured that I have a very capable rig, although the thing gets hot like crazy... Even with a cooling pad and Opolar vacuum cooler attachment! I should be good for a long while since I mostly play indie platformers that aren't too graphically demanding. Haven't been interested in AAA games lately.

I have this laptop (but with a 1050 instead of a 1650) and I really like it. I got it on a black Friday sale for $400 and at that price it is pretty good. For some reason, it has a 3gb version of the 1050, which I didn't know existed.

I think the 1050 (3gb) is a 1050 Ti minus 1gb of vram, it has the same number of shaders & TMUs, and 24 ROPs instead of 32 ROPs dues to the memory change.

That crucial ram kit is NOT made to run at 3200 stock.The stock 3200 kit should have a 1.2V CL22 configuration,but the crucial one have a 1.35 CL16 configuration.That's a XMP config like the other 3200 CL16 ram on the desktop.

I feel like that should have been more clear on the sellers page about its rated speeds in various configurations. Laptops often have less complete Bioses than desktops and are more likely to need JEDEC profiles.

Thanks for the Vid! I'm sure others probably already mentioned but when watching the Vid at 6:03 the first thing I noticed was the Crucial Ram packaging had 1.35v rating. Right off the bat knew XMP required to get full benefits. The thing I looked for awhile when I bought my 32GB of ram for AMD laptop lol : o ) Cheers to a New year and what it may bring lol

I know I'm like 10 months late but I'm actually buying this specific laptop and config from BestBuy on the 15th of this month (July) so I came here to see what it was like, and so far it's ticking all my boxes! (I play mainly older titles like TF2 , Skyrim, Minecraft (Although it can bring any PC to its knees), CSGO, and indie games like Hades, Stardew Valley and The Long Dark. So seeing that it can run newer AAA games at decent framerates, i'll be it at medium-low graphics, is still reassuring (although apparently in other markets there exists one with an RTX???)

Hp and dell like to lock their bios on laptops to have bare minimum functionality, i really don't know why but usually ram speed is one of the things they opt out of being able to be changed , ik there is a way to use "unlocked" bios but that's a device per device kind of thing and may result in bricking

Yes the JEDEC speculation is very possible in many cases with other RAM. It is not the case with this set from Crucial. This set requires a high voltage limit that only a few high-end gamer laptops can even support. These are JEDEC spec'ed but not certified.

I have an ASUS TUF GAMING laptop with a GTX 1650 and the GPU is amazing imo Especially now that I have an external 144Hz monitor that turns off the iGPU on the CPU and only uses the GTX 1650, so it improves FPS No game is a problem for it to handle at at least 1080p High Settings, except maybe Cyberpunk 2077 when you are driving around Night City
