Dawkins on religion: Is religion good or evil? | Head to Head

With the headlines covering fanaticism, fundamentalism, superstition and ignorance, religion is getting a bad press these days. And much of the conflict in the world, from the Middle East to Nigeria and Myanmar, is often blamed on religion.
But how are things from a different perspective? Some defenders of religion claim Adolf Hitler was an atheist. Communism under Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot or Mao Zedong banned religion, but also massacred millions. And science brought incredible and amazing advances, but also pollution and the atomic bomb.
A critic of religious dogmatism, Professor Richard Dawkins revolutionised genetics in 1976 with the publication of The Selfish Gene. He has since written 12 more bestsellers, including The God Delusion which sold millions of copies, was translated into more than 30 languages, and catapulted him to the position of the world's foremost atheist.
Mehdi Hasan challenges evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins at the Oxford Union in front of a varied and lively audience.
In a frank and at times heated exchange, they discuss: Is religion a force for good or evil? Can it co-exist with science? Is science the new religion? And why if god does not exist, is religion so persistent?

+David Roberts The very fact that atheism doesn't ask you to do anything is the reason why an atheist think that everything is allowed as long as it satisfies him. Which is the danger of atheism.

+omat baydaui So you would rather have your life ruled by a set of rules that a bunch of old men in the desert a long, long time ago came up with, rather than those from a reasoned debate of the leading logical intellectuals of your days? Feel free
@omatbaydaui722
@omatbaydaui722 8 жыл бұрын
John Huang 1) Intellectuals today are both religious and non religious. Intellect is not exclusive to non religious people or atheism. 2) I don't believe in a bunch of old men, I believe in wisdom and purpose. Religion, regardless of our opinions about it, provides those answers. In my case, if islam asked me to do bad things for society and for myself, I would for sure reject it. But reality is, it stands for the exact opposite.
@HaNsWiDjAjA
@HaNsWiDjAjA 8 жыл бұрын
omat baydaui 1) So you do admit that atheist intellectuals can make good rules? What if those religious people decide to twist the ancient wisdoms in pursuit of rules that work in today's society? Will you allow that? 2) That sounds like an opinion, not something you can claim to be a 'reality'. Certainly a lot of women in the Muslim world did not believe that the religious restrictions on their life is for their own good.
@omatbaydaui722
@omatbaydaui722 8 жыл бұрын
John Huang 1) Of course atheist intellectuals can make good rules, who said they can't. 2) So the fact that religion gives credit to the existence of purpose in life is an opinion?

Dawkins is not on the level of Hitchens when it comes to that kind of talk. Mehdi is injecting a lot of fallacies that can be easily debunked and refuted. Besides, some questions are not in his domain as an evolutionary biologist. Neil dG Tyson, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Lawrence Krauss, etc., should also be there to answer questions that fit their domain of expertise.

That Muslim interviewer (sorry but his name didn't come up) is only out to attack Prof. Dawkins and his worldview. I really don't know what this guy is trying to achieve, but for me, he achieved that I am looking at him being an aggressive and ignorant LITTLE man, without even near the intellect, intelligence, and the enlightenment, of Richard Dawkins.

@christastempel5577
@christastempel5577 9 жыл бұрын
Ali Raza thanks for your reply. It seems that you agree with me about Mehdi Hasan being an aggressive little man, however, I'm not so sure about the rest of your comment. So you say that Hasan was misleading Dawkins about Islam, when he said that punishment for apostacy is not death... I wanted to find out the context of this being said, but I must admit, couldn't be bothered to listen to the entire interview again. I need to tell you honestly, I have the feeling that you are not straight forward - you are straight by saying that the death sentence is present in all authentic muslim books of hadith and all muslim scholars agree about it... but from that I don't know if you agree, or disagree with this. When you say that the interviewer knew that Dawkins didn't know much about Islam, so he got away with it... the emphasis is on the interviewer 'knowing' , and Dawkins 'not knowing'. I don't want to be presumptious, but it seems that you are a Muslim. I argued with christians about this point, I don't think that I need to know much about christianity to reject it, and in the same way, I don't need to know much about Islam to reject it. I think Prof.Dawkins knows enough about Christianity and Islam, to make up his mind about the delusional and indeed dangerous aspects of religion, and Christianty as well as Islam, have provided people with self-righteous ideas, ´which have led to evil actions.
@AliRaza-qc9tz
@AliRaza-qc9tz 9 жыл бұрын
Christa Stempel Actually I'm an ex-Muslim and an agnostic.. What I meant to say was that the interviewer was lying deliberately because he knew that Dawkins was not that familiar with Islamic jurisprudence... As for the question if I like the death sentence for apostacy, of course not; I'm an apostate myself... As for the dangerous ideas inculcated by religion, I totally agree with that because I've been there once and I had those crazy self-righteous ideas myself..

The word "ayams" explicitly means days. Why would Allah want to confuse us? doesn't Allah himself say that the Quran is easy to understand? (Verse 54:17) And even if he meant something other than six days, it'd still be wrong.

The beauty is that Richard Dawkins ,the atheist , presented his arguements in a most convincing , sober manner in a sweet persuading voice which shows his human side apart from his erudition . That clearly wins the day for him. Of course his debating skill charms even his opponents. On the contrary, the anchor like a typical believer in God has been hasty and impatient and tried to argue as if he is engaged in debate more with a view to win rather than bringing any new insight on the table. The notion popularised by religions about the atheists that atheists are demoniac ,ia belies by Dawkins.Particularly Christianity and Islam speak evil about atheists and Islam still executes the atheists , due to lack of confidence and unable to respond to them though Christianity was no different and is powerless now particularly in West.

One reasoning for you, another for me, to suit my opinions, this is Richard Dawkins, can't even hold the same reasoning and rules to make his points.

@@mags7054 the difference is that when religious people do bad things they often do it in furtherance of their religion and they think that the thing they do is a good thing because their religious beliefs supports them. In contrast when a person uses science to do bad things they don't do it to further science, they do it to help a political or personal idea. In other words, science is a tool, religion is a belief system.

Great interview! Lots of probs to the anchor for the great questions. I do think that Dawkins had some difficulties explaining the reason for why he doesn't like religion (bit of an understatement). The main point with religion, and teaching religion, which he glances over once is that it goes against the (or his) scientifical way of reasoning. When we teach people, i.e. children, to believe in something without proof or without logical reasoning it sets a precedence for dogmatism. The hard part here is that when enough people are set in such way discussions become harder, there is no way to change the ideology of a dogmatist even though all sound proof or reasoning may point out the contrary. This might also explain his view on religion as child abuse. By teaching children religion as a belief, you make them susceptible to be trapped in a bubble. Once in that bubble it is hard to escape since reasoning does not work on belief.

As a child growing up in Afghanistan, my parents used to send me and my brother to a near by mosque in Kabul. The mullah (imam) told me that the reason we put a head stone on the graves is that, the day you die and you are burried, after everyone leaves the grave yard. You lying alone in the dark suddenly realize that your parents and everyone has left, you get try and get up. That's when your forehead hits the headstone and keeps you lying down. And then this some one come down from the sky with a big hammer and starts asking your question, and with every wrong answer, he smashes you with large hammer and your bones breaks into pieces and the comes back together. Then he asks another question and keeps repeating smashing your bones till the day we are all called to get up and present ourselves for the day of judgement. As a child of 5 or so years, I remember so scared of death. It truly scared me for life and it still a very big part of me, Even though I don't believe in it.

I don’t think the session is a debate but more of an interview. There are many ways that scientific rational philosophical approach has flaws. Many have suffered, died and murdered driven by non religious view .. WWI - WWII, Middle East Wars by the US and its allies, colonialism, the poor by capitalism and the list goes on. There are lots of things in this world, in this universe, that science can not, or perhaps, has not yet able to proof of their theories. In fact, with their rational way and approach, theories of this life from science have continuously to change.

@@hemantsinghrawat19 ‏Anthony Flew is considered one of the most prominent atheists, so he retracted his atheism and ،told us that the universe has a deity with modern scientific evidence, not with thought or dreams and feeling, but after science and modern discoveries about the existence of a Creator. He fell into another problem that the Creator wanted according to his mood ‏ He wanted the Creator to be neither speaking nor hearing, and creating creation in vain ‏But it is logical that this Creator sends a messenger to teach us who he is. And we have to verify the authenticity of the Messenger and what this Messenger calls to? ‏ It transports sperm from the liquid state to the eyes, heart, blood, arteries, and bones. Unconscious nature creates a conscious human being. Then this nature teaches about the importance of the heart and lung, then puts the rib cage, then oxygen, then water, there is sexual desire, and there are the genitals to complete the male and female sexual process. , What coincidence are you talking about, a coincidence that creates the male and the female. All of these are called verses and there are things that complement each other, there is a lung and there is air and there are teeth and stomach and in food and other things and we say that it has no creator!!! ‏ The only question God will ask you is ‏ focus on it ‏ ((He said: Did you deny My verses and did not encompass them in knowledge, or what did you do?)) ‏ I mean, God Almighty tells you what I told you is a lie and you cannot realize it or understand it ‏ And what in the world have you been doing? ‏ Do you know what your answer is? ‏ ((The decree will befall them for what they did wrong, and they will not be able to speak. ‏ If you find yourself in the world without a choice in a great reality we live in, and you go without a choice and a question is the most important ‏ If your destiny is fire, has God wronged you???ًً ‏Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, is a prophet from the Creator, and before him many prophets did not lie or deceive, and he is the only religion that commands you to worship one Creator who created everything. ‏First of all, you should know that the religion of all prophets is the worship of one Creator who created everything. Islam today is the only religion that commands you to worship one Creator and not idols, illusions, conjecture or a number of gods. But how do we know that the speech is from God and not from Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace? . These are some of the things that comfort your heart and believe that this is a prophet and many of the prophets before him ‏ The Almighty said: (Moreover He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke) ‏ The smoke confirms that the origin of this universe is inflamed. It is not a lake of water, as was the perception of all philosophies and religions that are based on illusion. This is one of the postulates of modern science today that the sky is condensation of smoke. This fact converted the French scientist Maurice to Islam and wrote a book entitled the Holy Qur’an on the scale of modern science ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? ‏ The Almighty says: ((And the heaven We constructed)) ‏ The sky is a building, not a vacuum as it was thought, and this was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017 that proved it ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? ‏The Almighty’s saying: ((And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander. )). ‏ That is, the sky expands with time. This fact, even in the time of Einstein, was not imagined by anyone and it was proven. And Einstein admitted it and admitted that it was the biggest scientific mistake he made in his life if he believed that the sky was fixed. The Qur’an before Einstein says that the sky expands ‏fact ‏ Almighty’s saying: :((And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail. )) ‏ The verse of the night is the moon and the verse of the day is the sun. The Qur'an tells that the sun and the moon were fiery masses. That is, the moon was a fiery mass and was erased, and the verse of the day remained visible to the eyes. Was the moon a fiery mass and extinguished? This is one of the biggest scientific issues discovered about the moon. The moon was already a fiery mass, and NASA issued on its official website a conceptual clip entitled The Evolution of the Moon in the video. In fact, the moon was a fiery mass like the sun, and this is what the Qur’an told about and the truth of modern science. ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? ‏Almighty’s saying ‏And you see the mountains thinking that they are rigid, while you will cross as the passage of clouds. [It is] the work of God who has perfected everything. In fact, he knows what you're doing.)) ‏ And the verse clearly spoke of a strange phenomenon, which is that the viewer of the mountains appears to him still, that is, they are still, but in fact they are not like that, rather they are in a state of constant movement. And the infidels of Quraish had previously accused our master Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, of madness, and it is likely that their joy was overwhelming when this verse was revealed. ‏ They also found in it, according to their claim, evidence of this madness, and they told the people: How can you believe this man who says that these fixed mountains move like clouds moving in the sky! ‏ And today it is proven that the earth rotates, and with it the mountains, how did Muhammad know that and why is he telling you instead of the matter that makes people consider him crazy? The matter was not from him, but from God. Almighty’s saying ‏Those whom Allah (in His plan) willeth to guide,- He openeth their breast to Islam; those whom He willeth to leave straying,- He maketh their breast close and constricted, as if they had to climb up to the skies: thus doth Allah (heap) the penalty on those who refuse to believe)). ‏After man was able to reach the sky by flying by modern means of transportation, he knew that the higher up in the air, the less oxygen and atmospheric pressure, which causes severe tightness in the chests and the process of breathing. : ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? It was not from him, but from God Almighty’s saying ‏Or (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light! ‏Modern sciences have revealed that in the bottom of the deep seas with abundant water - the deep sea - there is great darkness, to the extent that living creatures live in this darkness without visual tools, but live using their other senses such as hearing. ‏These dark darknesses are not found in the sea water that surrounds the Arabian Peninsula, but rather they have been discovered in the oceans far from it ‏This verse shows another aspect of the Qur’anic miracle, which is that the sea wave that all people only knew was one wave in the seas ‏The verse says there is another wave in the depths of the sea, and divers discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century a fact that was hidden in the depths of the sea, that fact that shows another wave that throws divers into it as it is thrown at swimmers, and this wave was discovered by Scandinavian divers. I will tell you what the Prophet said. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: One day the Bedouins who live in the desert will build tall towers, and this is my duty. Go and see where the tallest buildings are and who owns them. ‏God Almighty: ((We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?) And God informed the Qur’an of this by saying: “Did you think that we created you without a purpose and that you would never return to us?” ‏All these and other matters that I have not mentioned indicate that this is a prophet from God..More important than that, as I told you, is the only religion that commands you to worship one Creator, who created everything and before him many prophets. ‏Say, if you wish, there is no god but God, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God ‏ speak from the heart ًًًًًً

Very nice debate and interesting indeed. However, the presenter at around 23:00 mistakenly said that Islam does not teach the "universe was created in 6 days", when in fact it is mentioned 7 times in the Quran. Just saying.

Yes Quran describes Universe creation in 6 days and Earth's creation in those two days. Recent scientific discovery says 13.8 billion years for Universe and 4.5 billion years for Earth's creation. Put it in ratio 4.5/13.8 = 2/6 = 1/3. QURAN WAS RIGHT. The 1 day = 1000 years describes something else and not the matric for creation. It is the SPEED at which matters/deeds are raised to God and doesn't necessarily tells proportion for days of creation. It can imply to creation but the verse does not say so explicitly. No contradictory remarks on that!

I was told there was a Santa when I was a kid, it did me no harm, but there was also no religion around him, so that's quite the difference ;-)

Religion is a means by which people find meaning in live, it(at least the good ones) lays down a set of morals and values by which people can live a peaceful productive law abiding life. The same way people use technology for good (medicine) or evil (bombs) it's the same way humans can use religion for good or evil. Religion provides people the reason for doing good or evil. Science provides people the means of doing good or evil. To condemn either as bad would be foolish as the human is responsible for the purpose for which these tools are used. If your looking to do evil either would be useful. Vice versa for good. Its the human element alone that truly matters.

I think you are confusing morality and religion. Morality which is concept of right versus wrong can exist without religion. It is what guide non-religious people. Whilst religious teachings from many mainstream religions are generally aligned with modern morality, the biggest danger of religion is its followers giving up logical thinking and blindly following what religious leaders say. Followers can be manipulated to commit immoral acts as result of fervent religious belief.

Those things can give a sense of relief in stressful situations, it can also provide you with useful information and practical advice for real life problems. It's a positive experience for the majority. But there is also obsessiveness that could lead to not getting outside anymore and destroying the life ahead of you, it could lead to spreading hate, and make you insecure or it could be a bad coping mechanism. But the developer of whatever that thing is never intended for serious damage, maybe all they wanted to do was spread fun and joy. The game, or whatever it is, never even suggested anything bad. When is it that we blame the thing, and when is it that we blame the person? Some religion don't even promote terrorism and infact condemn it. It's like saying B comes after A therfore B is linked with A or has something to do with A. No, B just comes after A. But what do you think? 😊
