The real sad story is the real-life story of the actor who plays Tommy Gum. His real name was Tommy Morrison and was nickname, "The Duke", is based on the claim that he was a grand-nephew (or otherwise distant relative) of the Hollywood star John Wayne (né Marion Morrison). In 1993 he won the WBO championship and then in 1996 he had to retire form boxing due to be HIV postive. He passed away at the age of 44

While a talented boxer, he was really a brawler and a hooligan. Probably an alcoholic and drug addict - with multiple arrests for DUI, drug and weapons possession. He had 2 children by the age of 19, at one point he was simultaneously married to two women (whose both first name was Dawn) and finally settled down with a third (Trisha). He died of sepsa and multiple organs failure in his final stage of AIDS (he had tested positive for HIV in 1990s, and later presumably tried cheating on tests). Had a few fights in MMA. Two of his children are professional boxers.

He was sooo good that (if i remember correctly) he was the only man that Mike Tyson IN HIS PRIME said he was scared off. Tommies problems was he got to much money and fame in such a small amount of time. He indulged in drug5 and s3x and that ultimately cost him his life at age 44 in 2013. (R.I.P Tommy Morrison)

R5 may be the least regarded of the franchise but I don't think it's nearly as bad as its reputation. We see Rocky really step away from his role as a pro boxer. Adrian has her best moment since R3 on the beach. Mic the Angel. Rocky Jr. has good moments, and there are a pair of good villains here. I actually rank it higher than the next film. If you've got a problem with that, well, my ring's outside.

Part of the vitriol stems from the fact that, for 16 years, this was the series finale and, it wasn't a very good one. Now that we have Rocky Balboa (part 6), we finally have a proper finale and Rocky V now fits in better as an important chapter in the story.

I like that part 5 explored what would happen if someone of Rocky's stature lost all his money and had to start from zero. Part 5 gets a lot of hate, but it really isn't a bad film, at least, IMO. Is it the worst of the series? I'd say yes, but worst doesn't necessarily mean bad. It also has one of the greatest, most heartfelt scenes in the entire franchise (the flashback scene) with the always phenomenal Burgess Meredith.
@dnish66733 ай бұрын
I think 4 is worse.

I completely agree.... The "money issue" makes ZERO sense in this movie. Even if Rocky was in debt, his popularity would have EASILY secured not only some kind of "endorsement deal" for commercials, but PAID appearances to be a commentator at other fights. Not to mention they had to completely IGNORE all the deals that Rocky was shown to be involved with during Rocky 3 and 4 of appearances, promo-shots for products/magazines, and other commercials. It is like they FORGOT Rocky's popularity OUTSIDE of the ring in order to create a "conflict" that when looking at for more than 2 minutes ends up being a HUGE plot hole. Then again, Rocky 5 had the MOST "studio interference" so some "plot elements" were simplified just to put Rocky in a position of "having to knocked down".

While its fair to point out that this movie is poorly written there is plenty of real life pro athlete “riches to rags” stories to make this plausible…. Rocky 2 established how difficult it was to fit Rocky into Product endorsement deals , and it should be considered that while Rocky Always kept a strong Hometown following that might not have had the same staying power in the NATIONAL boxing scene : 1 he is no longer boxing 2 possible blowback for going TO Russia to train, then possibly appearing to be a pro communist sell out at the end of that fight. 3 by that point maybe having his first championship being exposed because of the number of times Mick only approved for him to fight competitors he knew Rocky could win. 4 the Whisper campaign the “Don King” Character was running ruining Rocky’s reputation 5 possible backlash for his ties to the Mob…. 6 finally last point…. HE needed them, not the other way around

The "dangly earring" was popular at the time, in-part because of the UK's "George Michael" music video "Faith" in late 1987 and became a fashion-trend. It was important to have the left ear pierced only for men, however, otherwise you'd likely be assaulted in most cities for being homosexual (right-ear piercing) known as "gay-bashing" intolerance. The mullett and earring were going out-of-style by the time this film came out except in some midwest slow-to-adapt communities.
