Double blaze means turn in the trail, if staggered the upper one indicates direction of turn.

should stuff your puffy all the way into your shove pocket in the rear of your pack. lots of overhanging branches and trees in close proximity to the trail on the AT so that's a good way to get holes if you have it kinda loosely strapped like that.

Great first day!!! Smart strategy; take it slow for the first couple of weeks to strengthen and avoid injury. Per the AT website: "Two white blazes, one above the other, signal an obscure turn, route changes, an incoming side trail or other situation that requires you to be especially alert to changes in direction. Sometimes the two blazes will be offset in the direction of the turn." Enjoy your adventure!!!

I watch A LOT of AT journeys (hoping to do it myself one day) and I really like how you're taking in more of the actual beauty of the trail - the trees, the water, etc. That's great. Oh, and you are correct: that was hoarfrost.

The frost you saw on the ground was frost heave, hoar frost forms on trees/fences and sometimes on the ground. Hoar frost forms from moisture in the air that collects on objects while frost heave is formed by water freezing in the soil.

Great video! Yes, that was hoarfrost. I like your philosophy of taking it easy, if you can call carrying a loaded pack 7.4 miles easy, for the first couple weeks. That will really payoff for you in the long run. Thanks for taking us along.

Nicely done video!!! I like your path less traveled down the "stream bed", lol. Reminds me of hiking in wilderness areas where that is needed at times to stay "on trail" and not make new one (erosion control). Wow, tons of people at your fist shelter area!! Your on your way!!, thank you for taking us along!!!

Those holes 0845 may be from a Pilated Woodpecker. They make big holes just like that. Could be something else tho. If it's any comfort those shots are blanks. I think your video was spiffy. Thanks
