Taylor, I've been following your hike since Day 1 and now that you've completed the Virginia Triple Crown it seems like a good time to wish you every success on your thru-hike! I enjoy your videos and your hiking style and how you always stay positive and upbeat. It's a real downer to hike with people who are always complaining, but you are always smiling and looking up even on the bad days. I also like how your updates are exactly the right length. Daily 10 minute updates work for hiking vlogs better, I think, than uploading an entire week of updates at a time. Good luck and keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Hey Taylor! That site reminds me of the Tooth of Time ridge camp at Philmont, my favorite camp site ever! So perfect! Amazing sunrise too. Seeing the cows hiking the AT was awesome! I don’t know how you don’t hike with music. I have to. What an amazing day on the knob. I can’t wait to be there next year! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. @@littlethislittlethat456 Out west (New Mexico) on a backpacking trip, we passed through part of a cattle ranch with a herd on it, and the bull was in the middle of them, bellowing at us. It did not charge, but it bluffed us a bit -- and it kept signaling its displeasure until we were beyond the outlying cows (steers?). There were nine of us in our crew, and we bunched up pretty close together for the mile or so that it took us to get through. We were in a canyon, so not too much area to run if it had decided to charge. I guess it was there to protect the herd? It's possible it was not the bull (we did not investigate at close range) -- but it was certainly the bovine in charge!

@@djg5950 is that in the Shenandoah?
@djg5950
@djg5950 3 жыл бұрын
@@ld71sc2 No. According to Summitpost (mileage approx 10 miles difference to what AT hikers using Guthooks are reporting the mileage to be) Dragon's Tooth is mile 690 (about 700 now) and McAfee Knob is 702 (12 miles north of Dragon's Tooth). Shenandoah National Park's southern boundary is mm 853. So they have about 150 more miles to hike before the hit SNP. Trail mileage changes almost every year with reroutes and trail section closures. I think Guthook's mileage reflects those changes. Not sure how often Summitpost updates their info. So mileage is approximately the mile marker listed.

@@ld71sc2 No problem. If you Google "AT Mileage chart" there are several sites that list the camping spots, towns, road crossings, etc. and tell you what mile it is from Springer Mt. Cows can and have caused fatalities around here in the past. Unfortunately with their owners/farmers and tourists, who wanted to pet their calves. More or less 20 years ago farmers in Europe started to change the farming procedure for cows. It was no longer worth it, to milk them, because prices for dairy were too low. So they started to leave the calves with them. They take care of their milk in a natural way without intervention from the farmers. The downside of this, seen from a human perspective, is that cows started to defend themselves and calves against humans, also in herd formations. Therefore in Europe farmers started to put up signs to warn people from the cities from behaving stupid. However, cows without their calves are extremely chill. In the US they are sometimes let loose for the season and get re-caught by the farmers in autumn (no work the entire summer but still meat to sell in the autumn). Thats why you may encounter cows on all trails. There is more or less just one way they can become dangerous: If for whatever reason they stand on your foot, if you try to go around them in a tight spot for example. This would mean a 6 week break from hiking and surgery as your bones would need to heal...
