Thanks for the nice videos! I suggest taking the short detour from the AT to Humpback Rocks, a few miles south of the entrance to Shenandoah National Park. If you are feeling adventurous, the airplane crash is a few miles out of the way. Big Meadows is the only campground currently open in SNP. Resupplying at the Big Meadows wayside/camp store is possible. The adjacent Dark Hollow Falls is worth the short side trip. A few cold nights are in the forecast here. Best.

I did the AT in 2019 and that Super 8 is probably the best bang for the buck I’ve ever come across for lodging. At least for traditional motels/hotels. I Also did 3 little Pigs. And Wendy’s the next morning after resuplying for an early lunch. Didn’t do the Mexican because I had Mexican in almost every small town since NC haha. The 1/3rd mark is only about a mile past that road so congratulations to being .333 of the way done!

Did this section 3 years ago at Dixie's recommendation. I didn't know you could camp at McAfee Knob, we stayed at the campground right below it. Tinker Cliffs was my favorite of the Triple Crown sites and not near as buggy when we were there in July. Good choice on the Super Eight. We stayed at the Travel Lodge and while the people were nice it was, how should I say, not in the best condition! Enjoying your journey!
@djg59503 жыл бұрын
It's illegal to camp on the AT other than established shelters or camping areas. A lot of people do it. Problem with doing it in popular areas like McAfee Knob and Dragon's Tooth is it wears down the vegetation faster. The fire at Dragon's Tooth was especially disturbing to me. Totally against LNT principals. Don't recommend others try to duplicate this behavior.

Take a towel from the hotel and bring it to the grocery store. Have them double bag everything. String the towel through the bag handles. Swing the towel around your neck holding one end with one hand and the other hand holding the other end of the towel. If you do this, you have made a backpack to get your stuff home.

@djg59503 жыл бұрын
Too early for mosquitos. They are either gnats (they don't bite) or black flies (they do bite and try to crawl into your eyes). Next is the No-See-Ums. Those bite and it itches. They look like flakes of pepper. Mosquitos are after all these hatch.

@djg59503 жыл бұрын
.6 miles down the trail there is a legitimate camping spot called the Pig Farm. Not a shelter (that's about 4 or 5 tenths further) but a large area with picnic table and fire ring. I know I camped there and hiked up the hill (twice) to get a sunrises on the Knob. Requires getting up and hiking in the dark.

Having dealt with updated apps & finding out that some keep running in background after update then next update fixes running in background is what many have found to drain batteries at times. Look up Google or iPhone update draining battery, Aside from faulty updates, rogue apps are also found among the culprits or rapid draining on smartphone batteries.
