Little Bear doesn’t just hike, she experiences, she notices everything, she getting so much more than just exercise. What she is learning on the trail is just as relevant as what she would be learning in school. She’s learning about responsibility, self reliance, and is becoming so confident that she will be far better able to deal with the challenges of growing up into a mature adult. This is a life lesson that is priceless.

The power lines can be scary for sure. The last I checked a lineman which is someone who works on power lines is the 2nd deadliest job under an under water welder. However when they get the call to go fix power lines they go no matter what. My daddy missed a lot when we were kids because of his duty to restore power for millions of Americans. He is retired now.

Quadzilla is currently challenging himself with a $1000 budget for a nobo thru-hike of the AT. He's sharing town food and lodging costs with 2 friends and picking up what he can from hiker boxes. He's also received some trail magic, so that has saved him some. He's doing well with it so far, but he's only been out there a couple or 3 weeks. This is also his 3rd thru of the AT, and he just did the Te Arorora in NZ, so his pace is quicker than most people, he didn't have to build up to 20 mile days. He bought all budget gear, and even made some of it himself! Lodging and food is a big chunk of the budget *after* you've bought all your gear. If you don't have any dietary restrictions, you can keep some of that cost down, I'm planning to hike in 2028 when I've retired, and I have celiac disease, so food is always a much bigger cost and concern for me. I'll be looking at a much higher food budget for sure! I really hope that you can stop in NYC to see Swan Lake. Maybe if you start a "buy me a coffee " page, we could contribute? Tickets aren't cheap, and a hotel in NYC is crazy expensive! But it's a great experience 😊❤

Funny how off the trail, food and housing are significant expenses too. I loved your answer to "Is there anything that made you question being out there?" MB, LB: "No." What do bears do? They do hard things, and continue north. 😀 I got sap in my hair more than once as a child...and my Mama was not impressed. 😂 LB is becoming more of a thru hiker every day. She mentioned at the hotel that she kinda hoped the weather wouldn't be so good on your zero so it made more sense. 😊 I'm glad you got to talk to your family MB. 😮 Cat's out of the bag, what's up Ellie?! Hiker Hunger....Went into a Bojangles at about 1/3 way thru my hike and the only thing on the menu that looked fully satisfying was the dinner for four. Though I did have a little bit left over for breakfast the next day. Just realized you're not wearing any sort of gaiters. How are you keeping trail detritus out of your shoes? Just emptying them out at every break?
@jimhenderson3876 ай бұрын
I appreciate your question answering videos and they make me think of my own questions. I'm curious about rides to town from your hostel. Are those rides covered as part of your cost of room? Or extra? If so, what kind of money are we talking? I'm also wondering about trail angels who provide rides. Do they charge? If so, what is a typical cost? Also, slack packing. I used to think that was a provided service as part of the room cost. Silly me. Not sure whose video I was watching, but I got the impression that slack packing isn't free. So what kinds of charges are typical. One more thing: can you imagine how much extremely hard work goes into building those electrical facilities? Starting with clearing the trees? Boggles my brain thinking about it.
@wildflowersadventures6 ай бұрын
Sometimes a hostel will provide a ride into town as part of their fee. So, often, for $60, you will get a bunk, opportunity to do laundry, and a ride into town for resupply. Slackpacking is sometimes offered by the hostel, but there’s always a fee to and from the trailhead. The last one we did was $65 each way. If you have people to split the cost with, then it’s much more affordable.

I literally LOLed when you said you hadn't planned on LB eating like a grown man 😂 Inflation is horrible. Cost of eating out has risen so much in the last 2 years. Cost of all package foods as well. Hotels everywhere are up a lot as well. We travel a lot and have really seen the increases the last 3 years. Yes, we can hear the electricity. A "nero" when you start out is usually less than 4 or 5 miles which is close to or possibly just more than half your daily average so yes, as your daily average goes up so does a "nero." You're doing great.
@christyjohnson45636 ай бұрын
The cost: I sort of find it sad how much of an up charge small places charge. I understand that they are trying to make a living, but sometimes it is triple the cost. Resupply can sometimes be tough. You were smart to have boxes sent.

@whynotbekind19576 ай бұрын
Sometimes finances may have to dictate, because everyones budget is different and for some people the only way to do the trail is on a shoestring budget, because maybe when the time to hike is available to them, the budget is low, and if they wait until the money is there, the time may not be…there are many reasons why some may not be able to spend much time in a hotel or hostel or spend much on food off the trail.
