I heard the reason Sean chose to tell this story is because a rumor about his brother caused him to turn to the Dark Side out of rage. He's now building a Death Star to blow up Earth, and Sean is trying to redeem mankind in his eyes in hopes of turning him back to the Light, without having to engage him in combat. Sean himself is of course a time traveler from the future (how else do you think he knows so much about StarCraft? He fought in those wars!), and he was madly in love with Kerrigan (Sarah -> Sean. Same first and second-to-last letters. Obviously true), whom his brother is holding hostage as the power source to the new Death Star. But in all seriousness, shit like this is why I wouldn't agree to be (somewhat) famous in a million years. It's incredible how much bullshit people can make up for no good reason, and I don't think I'd be able to handle it well. Sean identified it exactly: to the layman, celebrities aren't people, they're characters.

The whole idea of cutting out the less dramatic dialogue in shows can be explained by more than just "dramatisation" as you're suggesting here day9. Although that is one reason (which is quite valid on it's own I think some others might include); -Screentime is limited, so only the most important aspects of the people's lives can be shown. In some cases this is used to enhance certain parts of the "character" to deal with an issue or topic to keep the viewer interested. So for instance when you see the villain, you know something sinister is about to happen, it also helps the viewer remember the show itself. It's much easier to remember a character who is doing "one thing" most of the time, than lots of little things. Even though the latter would be more realistic, I can understand why the former is used in many shows. -Showing bathroom breaks and off-topic comments about the weather and such would be boring. (In respect to shows like 24, which are driven toward a more action focused group of people watching it). *There might be some exceptions for some comedy shows that use a more slice-of-life format, although even in those the seemingly inane moments usually fold into the main plot for any given episode or sub-plot. -Checkhov's gun to quote wiki "Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there." In other words you can't just throw dozens of meaningless interactions with the characters at the viewer otherwise you end up with a film like "the room". -There are people who act like that. I know, you think i'm lying because that's easy to do on the internet but really. There are. And no you probably don't want to meet them. The people who are less likely to get into crazy situations are usually the level headed ones, thus only the overly dramatic will do for things like "Mr super detective who solves the mystery of three prime ministers murdered at a lake while throwing out cool one-liners". A story like "Joe average walked down to the shops one day and bought some food and accidentally fell over his own untied shoe-laces" doesn't have quite the same dramatic feel. Although again there is a place for the more pedestrian slice-of-life format reserved for poor Joe. As for your story of how people hear rumours about you, well I guess that's down to the rumour mill. The old chinese whisper effect is real. "Send reinforcements we're going to advance" "Send three and four pence we're going to a dance".

In the book Contact by Carl Sagan, on which the movie with Jodie Foster is based, the president of the US is randomly sick with the flue or somesuch for no plot relevant reason. I read that book years ago and I remember it because it is so out of the ordinary to have that happen in fiction.

Tropes in stories are stupid, and it was that realization that created postmodern writing. People just randomly get sick, go to the bathroom, or masturbate in Don DeLillo's novels, just like in real life. Snapshots of quotidian life do contribute to a sense of flattening of affect, but hey, dimensionality and depth in stories is often an untenable ideal that a lot of us try to force reality into.

In Pulp Fiction for example Samuel L Jackson is at the toilet, when John Travolta meets Bruce Willis, because he had to wash down the hawaian burger during the "interrogation" the scene before. Things like that make Pulp Fiction a masterpiece, because it "makes sense" in a very natural and subtle way.

I like how community made fun of the dialogue in S06E01 when Frankie is interviewed. In terms of hierarchy I'm a big believer in it. Someone needs to say "I'm in charge" and that person is me. That is my decision. and the interviewer just goes "wait, what? Who talks like that?"

You should check out realist books, like Dostoevsky or John Green or whoever you find on the web. In Crime and Punishment main hero spends a good tenth of the book just sick for no good reason, and you follow him through laying on the bed, feeling bad and talking to relatives/doctor.

Well I believe characters are written 1 dimensionally because we are prone to make fundamental attribution error When you see somebody arguing with a cashier in front of you, you generally assume the person is unpleasant, you don't assume the person is just having a bad day. This is why its better to make the characters 1 dimensional so the viewer does not make this error and the story is easier to follow. Yet I think, just as you do, this is sometimes abused way too much and results in poor script more often then not.
