Some of this hit alarmingly close to home. The reason why I know Game of Thrones is even a thing is because I found out my crush loved GoTs and I was desperate for common ground. So she let me borrow her copy of the first book. At first I was like "I dont care if this is the shittiest book ever written I will read it." Then of course 3 pages in and I discovered that not only was she my crush but she had an incredible taste of fantasy. True fan of Martin AND we're still friends...I call that a win.
@ZombieSurvivalist1110 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. That's a tough spot to be in and I certainly understand it. But this is how I've always looked at it, you'll only truly regret the things you didn't do. Even if you make a decision that was a mistake at least you did it so you can never do it again right? Its the things you don't try, the "what ifs" that keep you thinking. I'm not in your spot, I don't have all the details and data and I'm certainly not a Life Guru like a certain Sean Plott but you'll never get anything without a little bit of risk.

***** I'm going to be a little presumptuous and dole out some things to think about from the quote-unquote wisdom of age. If they're useful, terrific; if not, so it goes. It's easy to say "just go for it", but as someone who has wound up friends with people I've been interested in far more often than romantically involved, and who is actually very happy with all those friendships, I do understand where you're coming from. That being said, I'm going to guess you're either in or not far past high school. If I'm correct, as hard as it is to really grasp now, the fact is you will probably not be as close friends with this fella down the road as you are now. Certainly it could happen, but much more often than not it doesn't. Therefore, you have less reason to fear running him off because the two of you would probably slide apart to some degree anyway. More importantly, while you can't control what someone feels towards you, you can control how you express your feelings towards them. And how you express your feelings will affect his reaction much more than the fact those feelings exist. That's not to say that if you're super cool about it, he won't have some sort of freak out, but the odds are substantially reduced compared to if you have a heart explosion and gibber out your undying love in a string of barely intelligible sentences. The biggest mistake we all make when we're interested in somebody, and keep making until we learn to stop doing it, is assuming how they think, how they'll react, all the things we can't really know without a knowledge of their private minds we're not likely to have. Usually it's just a reflection of our greatest concerns, and has no bearing on reality. It also ignores our own qualities, and the positive things that the object of your interest might feel upon discovering your attraction, even if they're not interested. To wit: You said he's a shy guy. I'll assume he's ok looking. Girls are probably not beating a path to his door, which means he probably lacks a lot of positive attention from women. That may not bother him, and it doesn't mean he'll be overjoyed or grateful when someone does show an interest (be it you or anyone else), but don't you think he would be at least a little flattered by you acknowledging your attraction? Hell, even if he was gay, don't you think it would make him feel pretty good? Even if he's taken off-guard by your admission and needs time to process how he feels about it, that alone will work in your favor in terms of making it less likely he'll flip out and start avoiding you. Finally, looking forward: As a woman, the benefit to you in learning how to put your feelings forward despite fears of rejection is enormous. Guys have to learn how to do it because there's simply a societal expectation of such, so it's more of a survival tactic there. Plenty of women don't bother simply because they'll always have some options to choose from, or at least they think they will. However, if you become comfortable with showing your interest first, you won't be stuck choosing from whoever picks you first; you can expand your romantic possibilities considerably simply by being willing to make the first move, and being a nerd will amplify that effect by a couple orders of magnitude. So even if it doesn't work out with this guy, it's worth it for you to learn how to take the shot. Ok, so I'm clearly in the pro-"say something" camp. I would be remiss to say all that and not at least throw something out about how to do it. I can't really tell you what to say, though, so I'll just break it down into what are basically the two parts of getting at somebody. 1. Telling him. Be cool, but be honest. Absolutely do not downplay your feelings; don't say "I kinda like you" if he's been making your heart pound for months. If he has no idea you're into him, he can only take you at your word about how you feel. Don't be afraid to touch him while you're speaking if it feels right (e.g. hold his hand). "Being cool", in this case, is not taking on an air of forced calm; it only means expressing how you feel, taking a breath if your thoughts are getting away from you, and continuing. It's really hard not to ramble when you're new to doing this, so don't fret too much if you run on a bit. And when you're done, stop. Try not to let your nerves keep you talking when you have nothing left to say. The last part here is, just like you shouldn't assume his reaction, don't say anything that assumes his reaction. Since you like being friends with him and want to protect that, it's not terrible to throw in a little if -> then; for example, "I still want to be your friend, even if you don't feel the same way." But absolutely do not undercut yourself with something like, "I know you're probably not interested..." It's easy to let something like that slip out if you get a sense he actually isn't interested, but confidence and the bravery to make this move does count for something with a lot of boys. You can't read his mind, so don't try. 2. Accepting his reaction. Where the first part feels the hardest because it requires action, this part is really what makes that action difficult, because you're giving up control of the situation. Whatever comes next is triggered by your choice to act, but that "whatever" is up to him, and it may not turn out anything like you hope. I can sit here and tell you that you are almost always better off going through that process rather than sitting on your feelings, even if it doesn't work out, but it's impossible to really understand how that can be true until you've been through it a few times. All I'll say is this: If he reciprocates your feelings, that upside is amazing. If he doesn't, but you two are still cool, it's a weight off your chest. If it blows up your friendship because he can't handle it, it's actually not uncommon for people to reconnect (at least as friends) once they've matured a bit after something like that happens. And if the whole thing blows up permanently... well, I've never had a friendship melt down that I didn't look at in retrospect and see that it would have ended anyway because we were too different, didn't have enough interests in common, or what have you. Oh, and if you wait for the next guy because it's just too hard now, that situation isn't likely to be any easier than this one. It only gets easier through experience. One last, actual, final note of warning: While I'm doing my best to assure you that the odds your relationship with this boy will collapse are low, it's guaranteed your relationship with him will change in some fashion, whether he's interested or not. Even if you stay friends and don't really act any differently towards each other, there will be a different vibe, because you won't be dealing with the question of whether or not to express your feelings any longer. And different doesn't mean worse; it's not at all uncommon for this to bring friends closer, if the one who isn't interested appreciates your trust and courage in being open about how you feel. But it will be different, and it's wise to be aware of that. ...good god that's long. I hope it helped.

The course of events? Helping her make Green Tea and slowly, smoothly moving closer as we filled our glasses with water... No seriously, that was 5 hours of planning. But hey, it worked for a week!
