This is a Day in the Life of a Japanese All Night Izakaya Drinking Restaurant Worker in Tokyo Japan. In Japan she is called an Okami, the head lady in charge of the restaurant, in this case a Japanese Izakaya. This is the typical day of a Japanese night worker or a Japanese person who works all night at an all-night restaurant in Tokyo. She works at Ginza Karin, an all-night Izakaya restaurant that offers traditional home-style Japanese cuisine with a wide selection of alcohol in one the most opulent areas of Tokyo, Ginza. She built this shop from nothing and now she’s serves as the Okami. The early-shift workers start the prep beforehand, just in time so she can check the dishes when she arrives, ensuring that each dish created meet the high quality standards she’s put in place. Her restaurant is located in the heart of the Ginza 7 chome / 8 chome district, renowned for its abundance of Japanese hostess clubs, with many of the hostesses in the area either wearing dresses or Kimonos just like Yuka. The Izakaya serves Obanzai, which are everyday Japanese side dishes made with seasonal ingredients, originating from traditional Kyoto-style home cooking. The dishes are usually served in large bowls lined up on the shop’s countertop for customers to able to see and choose. We follow her from her morning routine all the way until the end of her work night.

@@srljedi6790 Haha, so funny and original, but actually watching the video: End of work at 4-5 AM (30 min to get to home after), go to sleep at 6-7 AM, wake up at 12 (so just 5-6 hours of sleep), go to work at 2. Administrative work, getting a haircut/styling. Drink before customers arrive, non stop entertaining them throughout the night with god knows how many drinks. And having to do that daily. Blimey! (oh and she is still teaching too, start of the video mentions eating leftovers from her cooking class) Is she overworked? Yes, unless you think that her workload is not. Is she single? Yes, mentioned in the video. Is she an alcoholic? The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism would say yes. Is she strong and cool? Yes, but glorifying such a lifestyle is just wrong. Hence why it’s a “sad” rather than “prime” example

Thanks so much for recommending this restaurant! I actually visited and had such a great time there. I really loved all the dishes and drinks there, especially the traditional obanzai. Yuka was super nice. When she knew that I became aware of her store throughout your video, she was very happy and said that there have been other customers like me recently as well. Yuka agreed to take a photo with us when we left the store and waited for us as we walked away.

Wow, I gotta say, that’s an overachiever right there. Someone who loves what she does and is constantly pushing herself forward. First a nutritionist, then cooking sensei, then business owner in the food business, one of the toughest industries to be successful and one where you certainly fail if you don’t work hard. You can see how successful she is when most of her restaurant employees are actually her former students. Congratulations to her.

You know this is no ordinary mom and pop shop! So much elegance and class just by looking at her. Also the location of this restaurant in dead center of Ginza means it’s one hell of a restaurant to be there! Kyoto dishes are lightly flavored compared and has such delicate taste so I can tell it’s no ordinary Izakaya. I came back to the U.S. after a week in Kyoto and I realized how much sodium is used and how vibrant American food is since my palate got so used to the delicate flavors of Kyoto. I couldn’t use ketchup or salsa at first since it was way too strong of a flavor.

Went to Japan last year. I am 62 and "hit" a lot of places like this. I am so amazed by Japanese culture. Just the best! I think I will split all my time between the states, Mexico and Japan. You get the best of everything...a bit of the EU too. Great vid! Thank you

She must have some ancestors from Poland :) drink with customers all evening and keep a clear mind, bravo! The coolest thing about this restaurant is that it gives the impression that it was a party organized by friends in their own apartment. Everyone is having a great time, the owner joins in the fun instead of standing there with a sad face and tapping her foot when they leave. I would like to have such a place near my place of work or residence.

Excellent episode Paulo. Your "Day in the Life" series is what you do best. Your personality and interview style brings out the best in your subjects and subject matter. These are much more interesting and I learn much more from these than from restaurant reviews.

What an amazing lady! She has both discipline and charisma and it was honestly a delight seeing her and her staff work. The restaurant reminds me of tapas restaurants from Spain. Like here, they serve multiple small dishes and are paired with alcohol, usually sangria. If I'm ever in Japan again, I'd love to go to one of these restaurants. Last time I went, I was too young to drink 😆.
