In this video I take you along with me for a day in my life as pediatric home care physical therapist. I talk a lot about paying off my student loans, but now its time to show you what I actually do that got me all those loans in the first place! I graduated with my DPT in 2019 and have been working for almost 2 years now. I currently work in the community setting with a primary pediatric patient population. I love what I do and the patients I work with. Let me know any questions you have about being a pediatric or home care physical therapist in the comments!
PS I hope this chatty vlog wasn't too boring since it was just me in my car, but thats what I do most of the day when Im not treating!

So happy I’ve found your video! I’m a second yr SPT and on May 10th I start my second rotation at a peds outpatient clinic. Any tips or advice you can give? I’ve worked in daycares in general, but PT is obviously so different!

how exciting! My biggest advice is to be flexible! You may have a plan for treatment in your head but things almost never go as planned when you are working with kids! The best way to learn with kids is to be as hands on as you can, so don't be afraid to jump right in if your CI is ok with that! And knowing how to communicate with kids is key so its great you have experience in the daycare!

I just found your channel through your Trader Joe’s hauls. We’re starting our debt free journey & are currently doing the YNAB 34 Day Reset. That’s awesome that you’re a pediatric PT. I used to be a preschool teacher and y’all are rock stars! (Also much love to the OT & speech therapists!)

Thanks for watching!! Congrats on starting your DPT! Get ready for lots of studying! Home health and travel PT have the greatest potential for high salary. Home health can be great for work life balance too because you get to make your own schedule and always be one on one. You can make 100k if you want.

Hi there. I would look for physical therapy technician or physical therapy aide jobs! They are usually in outpatient clinics but I worked one in a skilled nursing facility when I was in undergrad.

Just curious.....are you a DPT or did you become a physical therapist before it was changed to a Dr.? My son is graduating from high school this year and will be starting college in the fall majoring in exercise science hoping to go on to be a DPT. This video was definitely interesting and I'm going to show it to him. If you don't mind me asking where did you go to college? (and grad school of it was somewhere different.)
@StefanieAnna
@StefanieAnna 3 жыл бұрын
I am a DPT. Good luck to him! I advise him to shadow as much as possible and work as a PT aide/tech to get as much exposure to PT. The debt to income ratio for a new grad PT is not good so my advice would be to really make sure he loves it.

I am a DPT What is the eligibility criteria for joining as a pediatric physical therapist? Do I have to do further specialization or is DPT enough?
@StefanieAnna
@StefanieAnna 2 жыл бұрын
No other criteria or specialization required but it is helpful to have experience with children through clinical rotations in order to land a job.

do you need to get special training to practice pediatrics?
@StefanieAnna
@StefanieAnna 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. It does help to get a job to have at least one pediatric clinical experience in school. Most jobs look for some sort of experience in pediatrics but some are willing to train!

Go to the cheapest state school that has a good NPTE pass rate. Don’t pay a ridiculous amount of tuition for the same degree. Jobs don’t care where you went to school. They just care if you are licensed.

(Spoiler: I KNOW you are a doctor). How do you feel that the majority of people do not consider you a “doctor”? When people mention other doctors like psychologist or chiropractors, they always make little jokes like “he/she is not a doctor because if I get sick one day they won’t know how to fix me”. Again this is a question out of curiosity and my own observations.
@StefanieAnna
@StefanieAnna 2 жыл бұрын
hey there, good question! Honestly, it does not really bother me. Majority of the public thinks of a medical doctor or physician when they hear the word doctor, and thats fine! I still earned my doctorate and am considered a doctor of my profession. Just like a DDS or DNP etc. I sign my paperwork with Dr. but I don't care if patients call me Dr. or not. I do wish that the public realized that DPTs have a vast knowledge and if you have musculoskeletal problem you can see a physical therapist first with direct access and you don't need to go to your PCP first (in most states/insurances) If there is a medical issue, we are trained to know when to refer out!
