Come spend the day with us! Henry goes to a birthday party. Andy and I have a disagreement. We deal with high blood sugar (338 double arrows up) and low blood sugar (54 angle down). We give you a glimpse of what it's like to have a child with Type 1 Diabetes.

I totally understand you when you talk about calculating doses and making sure you take everything into consideration, we parents of diabetic children do some very challenging and critical calculations and decisions for them. Its a hard thing. My husband would definetely do the same thing as Andy. He worries too much. He would go to the party just to make sure everything is fine. When the numbers turn out well you think you have won the golden medal! Don't want to mention what it feels like when they don't. Anyway, well done for your calculations, for supporting and encouraging Henry to take care of himself and thank you for sharing this with us. Diabetes is a shitty disease but I am happy we parents communicate about this to one another and definetely softens our hearts. Thanks Amy!

You have such an amazing family, Amy. I don’t blame Andy for staying at the party to watch over Henry’s diabetes bag. Is there any way Henry could wear his diabetes bag put the items in his fanny pack that he wears with his Dexcon? I wish they could have just locked his diabetes bag up at the party so that Andy did not have to go. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend. 💗 Janine

It’s so fun to see Henry gaining more independence and you guys allowing it. It can be hard when your child has some medical issues that make independence a little scary. My best friend and her son are type1 and it’s interesting to see how his future could be :)

So, sorry Andy but I agree wit Amy on this one. Henry would get so much confidence from doing it by myself. I have Cerebral Palsy, and my mom had to learn to let go, when I was eight she started sending me to overnight (for a week) camp with university students that were hired to take care of special needs kids, and she had to trust. And no, they didn't do everything right, but those are some of the best memories of my childhood. They helped me form my identity away from her. Same thing when I was in high school, she let my SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD best fr end drive our 60K wheelchair, 60 miles to Winnipeg so I could go out for dinner with my friends for my birthday, like other people my age did. I'm positive she wanted to crap her pants. But that night meant the world to me, and I'm better for having done it. It really shows when you compare me to others with CP. I've had a much more normal, fulfilling independen,t life. Henry is very smart. I think he would understand if you specifically said to him: "Your PDM is worth a thousand dollars. That's as much as we pay for this house (or whatever) in a month. We can't replace it all that easily, and you need it to live. So, please watch your bag." Instead of the vague and less important sounding "be responsible". I remember growing up that I always cared more when my parents were really straightforward with me. Also, at a birthday party theoretically the hosting parents would care too, if you were frank about it. Anyway, just food for thought. Because the best and hardest gift my mom ever gave me was letting me go.

+Danielle Otto Your mom sounds awesome! Letting you guys take you to winnepeg and go to camp. That's awesome. Thank you for sharing. Henry has gone to his friends house by himself a couple times. He's loved that.

What a great video! I forget how hard it must be as a couple trying to make the best decisions (insulin dosing wise) for their child!! But you guys sure ROCKED it this day!! I am SO SORRY you guys are having such a bad time with vandals!! I would have done the same thing as Andy... I know Henry is responsible, but with all the the thievery you've been encountering, it would weigh heavily on my mind!! I know all Henry's "electronics" cost an arm and a leg!!! Amy you look gorgeous!! You guys certainly are a GREAT TEAM, both as parents and snow shovelers!! 😉

Sometimes with technology it creates more anxiety. When I was a kid I took insulin at bkft and dinner mixed with a short acting and long acting. If I went to birthdays I didn’t really factor in treats just ate it and would be high until next blood sugar check which was only done twice a day.

My youngest loves to play Garbage...my boyfriend dad,a old farmer,taught her how to play the card game...she even got playing cards for christmas...so sorry your snowblower was taken,that really stinks...we had over a foot of snow here in Nebraska about 3 weeks ago,not much has melted because it's been frigid cold,then we got about 2 to 3 inches more yesterday....i am sooo ready for warmer weather and spring as the cold makes my MS flare with nerve pain...have a great day and stay warm

+traci hilbers It's FREEZING here right now. Painfully cold. I feel you. I'm so ready for winter too. They stole it right after our 12 inches we got so at least we got to use it one last time for that big snow. People can be terrible. Can't trust anyone in our neighborhood.

What would you rather have, high or low blood sugar?
@dreamflight6000
@dreamflight6000 6 жыл бұрын
I personally HATE high blood sugar. It takes forever to get blood sugar down and he feels sick. Lows are super easy to treat and he gets to have candy and his blood sugar comes up quick. Now, Andy would say he would rather have high blood sugar because it's not as immediately dangerous.
