That depends. Back in the day it was extremely popular. Nowadays it feels and looks to dated I think. It didn't age super well. I had a big love-hate relationship with it. I am from the old guard, when the original DOD still was a mod (yes I remember the bleeding and paratroopers very well). But like any relationship, I kind of accepted DOD source for what it was. Personally I find it quite interesting how many of the elements of these early mods can be found in modern games. Or maps in Day of Infamy for example.

dod_koln is in today's repository leak. In addition to the map seen in the Artstation screenshots there's a number of different prototypes. There's one called dod_koln_ab, that's almost a full playable blockout. (It's missing map logic and spawns, but the control points are all there.)

In the TF2 Gigaleak, 30 unreleased DODS maps got dumped aswell. Some of them are from the mod, while some are just never finished. 14 versions of Koln got leaked, with the last one being dod_koln_prototype09 which is from the official screenshot. Pretty cool we got to see these maps actually in person now rather then have to leave it up to imagination.

It seems like Day of Defeat is the forgotten Valve series. Everybody knows Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Left for Dead, and Portal. But I never see or hear anyone talk about Day of Defeat and I wonder why no one talks about the game, the concept is alright and everything, so I wonder why more people don't talk about this game.

Because Valve forgot about it. I honestly think with how WW2 shooters are today, with how inaccurate they are, a new Day of Defeat game could be made and do pretty well, especially if they focus more on historical accuracy than Vanguard. Valve just needs to make another attempt, because we all know they still got talent, they just aren't using it to their full potential.

as someone who played cs from closed beta to 2008... and tried some DoD(and liked it back in the day.. v1.3? dont remember..) if valve would make dod on the source2 engine.. i would actually play it... I didnt like cs:source or cs:go at all.... felt completely different game from the classic....

There is a beautiful DoD:S map called dod_kolsch. It is easily the best looking map ever made for the game and definitely took inspiration from the versions of dod_koln from the original DoD and Valve's abandoned Source version. I am surprised you did not feature it in this video. It is a favourite realism map. I remember playing an official unit versus unit match on kolsch. 3te PGD still play their public realisms on that map fairly often. Great video as always! Thanks for giving DoD some love, many of us still adore the series as much as CS.

The map's art style looks grimmer than the usual bright DoD:S maps. It's neat, like it's showing how the war has taken its toll on the city's vitality and liveliness. It would've been a good addition to Source, though I would've preferred to see the return of the British faction and some of the original weapons (FG42, MG34, G43) first. Maybe they could've delegated those guns into a German paratrooper faction? Regardless, great work finding out about all of this. Valve always has such fascinating cut content in their games.

I wish Valve would revisit Day Of Defeat for Source 2 or with Turtle Rock Studio's team taking hand at it. I can see it, "Day of Defeat : Armistice", using CS:GO ideas with monetization and adding classes from DOD classic and Source with workshop and character customization, along with British, Italian or Japanese units for certain maps or characters like CSGO with the SW update. Mabye even vehicles like Tanks and Gunner-seat cars for certain maps too, for variety rather then being stuck to on-foot.

That concept map you put together looks incredible. I wish Valve had completed more of their plans for DoD:S (and their other games) but we all know they have a hard time staying focused. I had a really great few years with DoD:S in mid 2000s but I moved onto other games, because it was clearly getting stale. But I've always been impressed by how strong the community is, no matter how little of it remains.

It would be nice to see Valve try and revive it's older titles through maybe some small updates like the Last Stand community update for L4D2. There is a lot that can be and should be done for DoD:S, considering how many things you can do with the WW2 setting like maps set in places like North Africa, Germany (as seen from this video) or even different sides entirely like adding Soviets, Italians, Chinese, Japanese, or even reviving the British. They can have their own array of new weapons that really could spice up the gameplay. New maps could accompany these factions that would all have a unique art-style to them: Eastern European styled maps for Germans vs Soviets. British vs Italians in a warm desert maps set in North Africa. Americans vs Japanese could duke it out in tropical islands in the Pacific Front. Fighting in much more lush jungle environments would be a nice change compared to fighting through ruined city streets in an urban western Europe. The Chinese-Japanese front, I feel is very underrepresented in the FPS market, so having a map or two where Chinese and Japanese soldiers could fight would be a welcome change. I know that Valve, in it's current state, wouldn't do any of this but one can only dream.

Correct me if I'm wrong but a multiplayer battle in a large scale urban center like Aachen or Cologne would be something new for any current WW2 shooter. Hell Let Loose, Enlisted, etc don't feature dense urban combat on that scale to my knowledge. I would be interested what that would play like as urban warfare could really be a nightmare

I remember when dod:s came out, My entire dod 1.3 team switched games. I remember telling them on ventrilo this Game was destined to fail for the simple reason of how weapon damage scaled compared to the 1.3 version.

I might consider making a remake of it (probably not in source though sadly, as i am much more experienced with and comfortable with unity and im genuinely afraid of c++) since the game i was working on before fell apart since key developers left the team.
