WWE Day of Reckoning 2 was the final WWE game released for the Nintendo Gamecube. Featuring a Ruthless Aggression roster with superstars such as Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, John Cena and Eddie Guerrero, the game is remebered fondly today as one of the unsung classics of WWE games.
While most were busy playing the Smackdown and Smackdown vs Raw games on PS2, Gamecube owners were playing something totally different while getting their WWE fix. Things started off rocky with WrestleMania X8 and WrestleMania XIX on Gamecube, but the Day of Reckoning games were a great upgrade from these previous titles. Touted as a wrestling simulation experience as opposed to the fast-paced, quick action found in the Smackdown series, Day of Reckoning saw players approach wrestling matches differently with much higher focus on strategy. Story mode in Day of Reckoning 2 was a continuation from it's predecessor, so fans where able to take their original superstar even further in their WWE career while trying to solve the mystery of the stolen World Heavyweight Championship.
While fans get ready for WWE 2K22, we'll take a look at WWE Day of Reckoning 2 in today's video. The roster, the gameplay, the story mode, and the comparisons to the N64 wrestling games are all covered.

This game holds one of me an my father's best memories. I had a caw character that was basically unbeaten an unstoppable. He had the title an my dad challenged me to a tlc match with Batista . I was about to grab the belt when he knocked me off the ladder an my wrestler fell off the ladder an outside the ring on to a table an was basically killed. After a furious amount of button mashing I made it back into the ring but right when I grabbed at the ladder dad had gotten the title. He had beaten me an my wrestler. then just to rub it in my father refused to give me rematch for days an picked on me as much a possible. Teen me was pissed but older me realizes this was completely funny. Ended up winning the title back the next week when we played again but man what a tough blow to take. Love you Dad.

11:12 Glad you mentioned this. It drives me crazy how no wwe game since this one has had proper hit detection. They claim to be simulations, yet half the time you're throwing punches which clip through wrestlers while they're doing certain moves, or you'll try and put someone through a table and the freakin' table moves. lol A wrestling game with HCTP's freedom, DOR's engine, and SVR's features would be a dream come true for me.

When I think of walk animations in this era I always think of Tazz on Tough Enough when he played one of the video games for the first time with the contestants. He picked himself to play and upon seeing his entrance was like "Why am I walking like I got a rod up my ass?" "The PS2 outsold the Gamecube in North America and Europe." That's putting it mildly.

Though I own the second, never playd much of it, but played the hell out of the first one. During the Raw storyline where you face HHH at the end in an Iron Man match, he would counter EVERYTHING no matter what. The screen always flashes when a counter is done. After so many tries, I got so pissed off, that I turned the game off, disconnected everything from the console, and then chucked my GameCube across the room. I look back on it and laugh as I very calmly disconnected the controller, memory card, A/V cables and power brick, then just throwing the console at the wall in an absolute fit of rage. After calming down, I tried again, and this time I pinned Hunter only a couple of minutes into the match, and then literally just ran outside around the ring for half an hour (in real time). I finally beat him 1-0.

The way to beat the match is to choose a finisher your wrestler can perform quickly. Some prefer the RKO or the stunner, I personally choose the modified STO. hit it on each opponent as fast as you can and go to climb out when your spirit meter is super red. Do that and you'll beat it eventually 😁

The roster in the game really does reflect what the roster was around this time. It was a lot of good matches but mega stars there wasn’t a lot. Not in the 2004 to 2005 era. But older games make me miss when WWE went all out on stages for PPVS. It made them feel like their own entity and a big deal. But now they just want to save money when they have ALOT of it

This game is crazy competitively, for example, one of my friends had a character that had the sweeping clothesline (a clothesline that hits the legs) for a finisher and also as a normal running attack. The thing is, because he has both of them, once he had the special activated you had to guess whether he'd do a normal SC or the finisher SC. you can't counter both at the same time. Absolutely love this game.

My roommate and I were and massive wrestling fans who used to go so far as to make predictions for pay-per-view finishes and trade a title belt back and forth every month based on who got the most right. We also played hundreds of hours of this game on my 17 or 20 inch television. We'd do tag matches we'd do grudge matches we'd book storylines in our heads. We even made our own wrestling characters as a tag team, painstakingly crafting each entrance so as they would be unique but complement one another over one long Saturday marathon. Probably my favorite wrestling game of all time.. My friends and I used to have "the Trish challenge" where we would see who could beat the most wrestlers with Trish Stratus.. Also having finishers for every position fleshes out every character and makes them feel less predictable

I remember this game being put down at the time because it “wasn’t Smackdown.” This affected its reputation at the time. Now people are starting to look back at it and appreciate it more, and I’m glad. I’ve always enjoyed this game, and I’ve recently returned to it through emulation and I forgot just how good this game was. Great video, thank you for it.

Excellent video! Definitely one of the best & most underrated wrestling games ever - this was very nostalgic for me to watch. I remember me & my friends rushing home from school to play this, only to find out from our parents that it been delayed by one month! (At least in the UK), which was absolutely gutting as a kid! I remember also that night’s Smackdown episode that Teddy Long was going to introduce the ‘Smackdown’ championship but instead Batista got drafted to Smackdown & JBL was the challenger lol!

I was a PlayStation kid, and lucky for that, because of the Smackdown series. But I remember being jealous after seeing some magazine articles showing screenshots from this game.

This game brings back some hard hitting memories. As a kid I spent so much time in this game. That opening of the video with the song from the game gave me immediate goosebumps... I wish I could go back to that time. Spending hours in the create a superstar mode and even more time spent creating entrances. Simpler times 😔

This game looks better than the SVR series on the PS2 tbh. The graphics were mind blowing for its time. And the gameplay still holds up.

This was the only wrestling game that I know of that allowed you to jump off a ladder from inside to outside the ring and land an attack, and even bulldog your opponent face first into a ladder on the ground and bust them open. Not even the modern WWE games did this and there's no reason you shouldnt be able to. Edit: you could even knock your opponent off the ladder out of the ring, a lot of good ladder features 🤔

I find it amazing how little advertising went into the GameCube wrestling games, when it was the Nintendo 64 vs the original PlayStation both of the console's games got heavy advertising campaigns but when it came to anything that sort of competed with the smackdown series, even Raw on the Xbox really, I never saw them advertised and I watched all of the wrestling at the time. The latest PlayStation game would get advertised on Raw and SmackDown and elsewhere and the Xbox and GameCube games might get advertised in a video game a magazine or the WWE Magazine and that was it at least in my Media Market (Buffalo NY)

Love the Create-An-Entrance. Yuke's main series had more options like tag and stable, but it didn't get nearly as indepth. Seems like once they got it down in SVR '06 they pretty much left it alone and added or removed stuff here and there. Their GameCube games had so many camera and pyro options and you got to preview them or see the angle of the camera without loading and looking at the whole intro. Plus they had options in XIX for you to delay your intro (like to time it with the beat drop in your music or like Jericho's countdown) or come from left, right, or center of the tron. The had options for Taker's Bike, Austin's Buggy, cars like Eddie's and JBL's that you could use for the top ramp portion, yet use different motions, lighting, pryro, camera angle options mid ramp and in the ring.
