Amazing. Wonder how this year will be with so much winter kill
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
The severity of the winter kills really is unknown until people go into the lakes and check them out. The oxygen readings only provide speculations of winter kills, but sometimes fish are able to find pockets of oxygenated water (underwater springs, current, etc) and survive. Hopefully not as bad as first predicted!

Do you find the fraser valleys and Blackwaters take chironomids as readily as Pennasks?

i totally get it that this whole region is fly fishing obsessed and chronomid fishing with indicator in particular. i don't have a powerboat, but i do love to troll from my canoe here on the Island. is this a technique that will work on the trout hwy? will these trout take apex lures, and other small plugs, spinners or spoons? the resources and set up required (specialized fly fishing boat, dual anchor system, multiple fly rod set ups) is a very steep obstacle.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Hi James, it's not so much that the region is fly fishing obsessed, but it has to do with using methods that would produce the most bites. Trolling is fine, but unless you are trolling at a specific depth with a downrigger, your presentation is going to be all over the place and only being randomly encountered by fish. Majority of the fish are feeding on chironomids, or other aquatic invertebrates so it's best if you are using fly patterns that imitate them. Majority of these fish also are found within the bottom five feet of the water, that's why most successful anglers are stationary at one spot, and sending the flies down to that particular depth range. Keeping your flies within that depth, you are more likely to get bites than trolling around. You don't necessarily need fly rods to achieve this. In fact I have done a few videos with gear rods fishing flies in depth at 35'. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKHWdoqkqLJ-e7c

Hey Rod, love your videos! I watch them all the time. Your knowledge is what I watch them for. I'm heading to Red Lake for annual trip. Do you think it will still be good after winter kill and the fires w yrs ago? Thanks! Keep up the good work.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
The winter kill is going to be your biggest problem. The extent of the winter kill is unknown for now until someone checks out the lake in the next week or two. It's not completely iced off yet, but a big portion melted today. I would double or triple check for verified winter kill before going up.
@steveoh8344
@steveoh8344 Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the info! Does winter kill happen at pretty much every lake in the area? Is there a lake you could recommend in the area that won't have as much winter kill? I'm coming all the way from Prince George. I used to live in Chilliwack, born and raised. I know the area pretty well but not familiar with winter kill.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
I missed this question. Some lakes experience winter kills more frequently than others, and all that depends on the chemistry and conditions of the lake. This past winter was more severe than others so a few more lakes suffered.

I'm curious what mount you use for your fish finder. Seems like a better option than drilling it on somewhere.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Yeah that setup really works for me. They are all Scotty mounts. I put an oar lock mount on the oar lock, and that's where the sounder is mounted to via their fish finder mount. The transducer is mounted to the transducer mount which is connected to the gunnel clamp mount. Here are the links. scotty.com/product/248-oarlock-mount/ scotty.com/product/no-368-universal-sounder-mount/ scotty.com/product-category/mounts/transducer-arm-mounts/ scotty.com/product/433-coaming-gunnel-clamp-mount/

Hey Rodney. Planning a trip out to Kamloops this late May. Do you feel a fly rod is a must? Thinking on sticking with the tried and true spinner and bobber plus worm. Thoughts?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
You can totally use a float setup, or cast lures (as long as it's not a fly fishing only lake). With a float setup, you should pick up some chironomid patterns. They'd work a lot better than bait.

Hmmm,given me an idea to maybe try this area after my visit to the Okanagen in July. Would it still be happening then or would the lakes be too warm? Carol, from Sydney,Australia P. S. Will also give my name to a few guides/fishing charter businesses just in case they have a single spot at some stage. You never know I might get lucky 😊
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Carol, the guide to go out with when you visit Kelowna would be Rod Hennig if he is in town (sometimes he resides in Mexico, but I am almost sure he will be in the Okanagan in July). He would be able to do guided trips for bass fishing, trout fishing like this (there are a couple of lakes near where you are visiting for this). www.kelownafishing.com Nick the co-owner of Trout Waters Fly and Tackle in Kelowna does these lake trips as well, so he'd be a good option too. I know both of them personally and I would recommend them to anyone. July can get a little warm for these lake fisheries but sometimes it's still fine, and the higher elevation lakes will be fine too.

I’d love to know what lake this is for my next trip through…
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't focus too much on which lake it is, plus from what I've heard, there are speculations that it may have had a winter kill from the oxygen readings. All lakes can have good days like this, and also terrible days. I've also been blanked at the same lake in the past. I would focus more on the timing, and conditions which may yield these results.

@@FishingwithRod Your chilling gear is my fishing gear in a boat unless it's raining or winter:) It's still 3 feet of ice on the lakes here so ice fishing only or sea fishing. Salmonfishing starts may 15th in 2 local smaller rivers and june first in the main rivers and cod fishing is basicly over since most have spawned now wich leaves me more or less 2 options. icefishing on somewhat sketchy spring ice or halibut fishing. I think this summers main target will be a hallie on the flyrod with a reg flyline and a reg fly. Not with a 6 ounce jig as i see some people do over there but proper flyfishing:) Looking forward to your coming vids and have a nice summer.

Such a shame FishBC felt they had to put FV catchables in what is historically one of the best Pennask lakes in the Region, and with on going low density Pennask fingerling stocking could be again (and yes, natural cyclical winterkill). Not all of us who live in and fish this area are fans of FVs!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
FYI, FFSBC/GoFishBC does not decide what quantity and strains are used for each lake stocking, province’s regional biologists do that. FFSBC is a contractor used to produce and release fish. While they may have some input on what should be done, ultimately the decisions are made by the government’s biologists.
@dsmith2601
@dsmith2601 Жыл бұрын
@fishingwithrod FishBC in consultation w/ Regional Bio, playing the semantics game doesn’t change the fact this lake has always been one of the fly fishing jewels of the Region blessed with clear water and an abundance of marl and chara shoals and historically was a Pennask only lake. Regional Bios and FishBcs assumption that all anglers want FV genetically mutated abominations put in our quality stillwaters after winterkills to “jumpstart” the fishing simply isn’t true! Many of us have lived with the cycles of winter and summer kills for decades and are more than willing to wait out the cyclical recovery of quality fisheries and spread out and try other lakes … there are literally 100’s of lakes in this Region after all!
