This story was so great. I love your delivery! Years ago, I had really bad chest pains after getting over the flu. It was so bad that I begged to go to the hospital because I legitimately thought I would stop breathing in the middle of the night. Got to the hospital and waited like 4 hours to be seen. Had to get naked, had to get xrays and EKGs. At 2 in the morning the doctor came in and told me that all I had was congestion. He gave me some like...over-the-counter generic kid medicine (I was around 15 at this time) and it went away immediately. So anti-climatic

@noneofyourbusiness42947 жыл бұрын
leonardo lopez yup. It also affects people around you. I tend to hyperventilate (unconscious heavy breathing, so I have to regulate it, or my brain will do that, if I should pass out), sounds worse than it is, but the first time I had it was pure panic mode. I thought I'm gonna suffocate, while I actually did pretty much the opposite, people around me started panicing because they thought the same, some old lady wanted to help, but didn't know how, so she just talked to me and introduced her dog to me. And that actually helped. It seems to appear, when my I'm really really bored, like nothing available that interests me. As far as doctors could tell so far, I'm absolutely healthy. It's also not a nice thing to experience in public for obvious reasons, but by now I know how to breath, when it happens and the best thing is to either talk to me or leave me alone, the last thing you want in such a situation are people who make you more nervous

I opened your page for the first time and this long-ass story started. So I decided to listen to it like a podcast while I did some work. Once you got to the "The children are fine, don't think about the children." part I had to put everything aside. I'm glad I decided to pull this up in a public place, where my stifled laughter, snorts, and tears will not make me look deranged. You are an excellent story teller. Thanks for that.
@AlexPope166811 жыл бұрын
Yeah... as soon as you started describing your condition, I knew... because it happened to me almost the same way (not in the same place, mind you), and yes, it's horrifying. The worst things about stuff like that is when you don't know, and you swear you're going to die. Additionally, I once thought I had a cancerous tumor, only to have it biopsied to find out it was just a lump of... er... fat. Yeah. Damn near same feeling as the end of your story. I pretty much got laughed at, and it was embarrassing, but at that point I didn't give a rat's ass because I wasn't going to die, and I was bloody happy about that.

@Danj9622110 жыл бұрын
As an EMT and former ER tech, this description of an emergency room was so literal and accurate that I almost died laughing. Only part that wasn't straight out of my old work was that he should have been on an EKG the instant he said heart pains to the doctor, although maybe Day9 just forgot about that part.
@ninwa9 жыл бұрын
Danj96221 Yeah, having gone in having a panic attack and what I thought was heart pains once, I could barely finish the word "heart" and they were rolling out a mobile blood pressure station/heart monitor and then immediately carted me in for an EKG. It was only after the EKG did they say "good news, you're not having a heart attack, now go sit down" and made me wait for two hours. Turns out it was just something sore in my inner chest-wall. EKG, blood tests, and x-ray all confirmed that my heart had no damage at all. My guess is the doctor already had the results from his EKG and his urine sample and concluded it was nothing serious (in the moment, anyway), and even though Sean was extremely nervous (rightfully so) the way the doctor acted makes sense given the information he had.

I'm a little late on this story but I feel your pain Day9, I studied philosophy and even thou I don't get many "I hate philosophy" because that sounds too close to "I hate thinking", however I do get lots of "philo is such a drag" or "philo is good for me but in reality it doesn't do shit". My understanding is that such people had too much of an easy access to using that kind of information without having to understand it and their complain is more towards the fact they would have to "start over" their education in order to further their understanding and until we can demonstrate to their satisfaction that the way they use those information is wrong, they won't feel the need to change their point of view. For instance, tones of people know the phrase : In theory it works, but not in reality it doesn't. Yet very little understand that this is a sophism and it means only that you either haven't applied the theory properly or that the theory was wrong to begin with. It doesn't mean that reality and theory differs in nature, only that we ought to accord our theories to nature, not to attempt fitting nature into our theories but simply have them represent as closely as possible what nature "tells" us. An easy example to understand comes from the demonstration of gravity. If you were to attempt the experience of dropping 2 objects on Earth to test the theory of gravity you wouldn't have them drop at the same speed, contrary to the laws of Gravity, and might wrongly conclude that the theory and the reality differs but that's just because you haven't taken into account the aerodynamics that comes with an atmosphere and if you had done the same experiment on the Moon which has no such major additional variables, an hammer and a feather would fall at the same speed. Running is only a drag because you've stop running. Thinking is only a drag because you've stop thinking.
