This song has NEVER gotten old! Hits hard every time for me! One of the first songs i played live on the drums as a 10 year old in my dad’s band.

Awesome classic tune. Back in the 70s I had a bunch of friends in my car. I put this on and blasted it through my primo stereo. When it was over, all my friends yelled "AGAIN!"

The Hollies were part of the British Invasion in the mid-60s, and they had other hits besides this one. And some great harmonies, too. This tune was all over the radio back in the day.

He's an undercover cop back during prohibition in the 1920s. Bars would open in basements, hidden from the police. People would be breaking the law to drink. He is going to bust the place. She's a singer. Normally she would be busted with everyone else. But he tells her, "Don't be scared, you're gonna' be spared."

I tried something like that once. DA said it was either her or me. I'm gonna miss that long cool woman in a black dress. She'll be up for parole in four or five years though. Of course, it might be awkward after I testified against her at the trial.

In thinking about your comments at the end, yeah right on, you totally got the feel of it I'm positive. It was a huge Radiohead but as someone who loved it back then but also I'm a musician of several years and if I look at it that way, wow that is just such a solid composition for something relatively simple and yet The Hollies were never simple, they were so talented. Love your sweater by the way, it just puts me in the exact mood for the holidays, pretty damn cool.

This song was a big hit in the USA back in 1972, Fun Fact: Many people thought this was a Creedence Clearwater Revival song. So much so that CCR's main songwriter John Fogarty SUED Allan Clarke and the Hollies. Claiming it infringed on their trademark sound. Particularly heard on CCR's 1969 big hit:' 'Green River'. Which reached #2 on the Billboard charts The case was thrown out! Great reaction young lady, RNB

I've been listening and loving this song for many years and I couldn't tell you right now what most of the lyrics are. I have actually looked them up and read them a few times, but after a while I forget what they are and listening to it does not remind me of them. I guess all you really need to know is that he is drunk FBI agent who is following a knockout in a black dress and she apparently 'has it all'. :)

This song would get everyone up on the dance floor...unusual superhit for the Hollies...people were used to their ballads...the opening guitar riff and the one in the song have become classics, as the song has. My only beef about the song is it could have used a guitar solo in the middle to lengthen the song. But I suppose they were leery about the radio stations not wanting to play the song if it was too long and takes away from advertising time. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1972 for two weeks, held off the top spot by Gilbert O' Sullivan's over the top sad ballad "Alone again Naturally." I called that song the "Poor Me" song lol.
