I'm so glad these videos are here. I'm preparing myself for sign language classes to be an interpretor. My grandma is deaf, so I have a bit of a passion for it.

I know this video isn’t about ASL sentence structure but I was wondering since the general structure is time topic comment how do you know in some sentences (Like the ones at the end of this video) that the time goes at the end? Thank you so much for these videos! They are very helpful and the making sentences at the end is really good practice for me as I hope to be an interpreter some day! Sorry the comment is so long and thanks again!!

I have a question… when I first learned ASL as a teen and then in college I taught both of my daughters ASL while growing up before ‘baby sign’ became a thing. Then compared to when my oldest daughter took ASL in middle school and then college… her teacher told her that how I learned and taught her as a child was “old English ASL” compared to what she was learning. I’ve noticed many of the signs you’re using and teaching are different from the way I learned especially the days of the week and months of the year. My question is how often does the dialect or method change?
@perfectfae35343 жыл бұрын
There are older signs that we don't really use anymore, but there are also different signs that different dialects use. I've seen 5 different signs for pizza so far & I'm sure there's more. It can be frustrating sometimes.

Is there a tip to differentiating between Monday and Saturday? My thumbs are short and my Ms barely look like Ms from the front xD. My Monday and Saturday look identical.
@LearnHowtoSign3 жыл бұрын
Great question. It really is all about the thumb. Saturday you can't see the thumb but with Monday you should see it peaking through.

Can someone PLEASE teach me how to sign "Teacher of the year award" in ASL? The deaf teacher at our school won it and i want to tell her congrats but im having trouble on the word "of" :(
@lachelleruiz79222 жыл бұрын
some filler words like "of" don't translate to ASL so there is no sign for "of". I'm still learning but I believe you can sign AWARD TEACHER YEAR. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the correct placement of the signs
@yinafernandez18663 жыл бұрын
Hii, I would like to know If signing "you" twice in a yes/no question is part of the grammar rule? For example: Are you coming to church this Sunday? (Sunday you come church you)
@LearnHowtoSign3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, signing your twice shows at the beginning who you are asking and the you at the end is the "closing signal" of the sentence. This is proper ASL structure. Sound like you are getting the hang of this!
@My-Channel_forever3 жыл бұрын
@@LearnHowtoSign , you mentioned the use of the closing sign is “proper” ASL. Do people sometimes leave off the closing sign in more casual conversations with people they know well? The reason I ask is that I don’t know any Deaf people, but have been watching Deaf content creators online to pick up more vocabulary and it seems hit or miss with the closing sign and I am not sure why that is.

On a web browser you can click the gear/cog at the bottom then there's a playback speed option. On an iPhone you click the 3 dots and the playback speed option is in that menu. Hope that helps!

English words like is, are, and the are not used in ASL because of it own grammar. Those signed are used in Signing Exact English which is a signed system, not a language like ASL.
