NASCAR is actually the association those cars came from... NASCAR, stands for "National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing", or "NASCAR" for short... The cars you see are "stock cars"... Though they by today's standards, ate far from being "stock"... The sport was derived from the old bootlegging days or moonshine running days... Moonshine is home made corn liquor whiskey that, in most US states, is illegal... Hence, "bootlegging"... Anyway, back to the topic of NASCAR and why they call them stock cars... Back in the 1950s, when "NASCAR" got started, drivers were to race *STOCK* cars... No roll cages, engine tuning, just a good ol' stock car... But this was seen as being too dangerous, so the association allowed drivers to install rollbars and other safety features in their cars... Eventually, car manufacturers started producing actual race cars... And so the 100 percent, thoroughbread *RACECAR* was born... And that pretty much have birth to what NASCAR is today... I hope this gives you a better understanding of the American Motorsport known as "NASCAR"...

Saw it in theaters as a 6 year old in 1990. Yes, my parents were perfectly willing to let me watch this despite its PG-13 rating. I remember getting the little 1/64 cars that were released at Hardee's at the time. Over the years, I learned a lot of the real-world parallels to the movie. Namely who the characters were meant to be based on as well as the way some of the scenes in the movie played out in real life. I've always heard Cole was about 85% Tim Richmond with a little Geoff Bodine thrown in especially given the rivalry with Rowdy Burns mirroring the rivalry of Bodine and Dale Sr. just a few years prior to the movie. It's actually a fun little challenge looking at parts of the movie and learning about the real life incidents that inspired them such as the "Big John" meeting after their Daytona crash. It's almost a shot for shot retelling of a meeting Dale Sr. and Geoff Bodine had with Bill France in the late 80's.

Best part is when Tim tells Wheeler's guys to push Cole's car, the official tells him he can't, and Tim responds with, "it's my engine in that car, I gave him that engine, and that's what my boys are pushin!" and somehow the official just nods and is ok with this. Back in 1990 my dad(Mike Trivette) worked for Hendrick. The shop was at the Hendrick compound, kind of in the back. It was called the R&D Department. And it run by a guy named Gary Dehart. I was 15, and would go there every day after school, and try to help work on race cars. But mostly, I did a lot of sweeping, picking up tools, making drink & snack runs to the vending machines in the main building. This wasn't a official team, so I got to spend lots of time there. One day I got to to the shop and there were a lot more people than usual. Turned out to be the Director & producers for Day of Thunder. From that day, the work at the R&D shop was crazy. It was an epic undertaking. I was hired immediately for $5/hr. And would get 50-60hrs. a week. I got to go to Daytona and meet Tom Cruise and Micheal Rucker. It was awesome. Those 4 cars that actually ran in the Daytona 500 were built and prepared by the R&D department . And we were also the pit crew. The cars had to come in and have the film switched in the cameras mounted inside the front and rear bumpers. When the movie was done shooting, those 4 cars became the ultra slim fast team car #18 with Greg Sacks driving. If you want to see a great under dog story, go back and watch Talladega in 1990. Dale Sr. & Greg Sacks went at it all day. It was pretty even on the track, but when they came down pit road, the flying aces were fastest in nascar. And the ultra slim fast crew (with mostly over weight old guys my dad included) wasn't ultra slim or fast. That team eventually became the 5 car driven to a championship by Texas Terry Labonte. That was a great experience, but I have to say. The entire time we worked on the movie, everybody was talking about, this is going to be the real racers movie, not some cheezy, fake, unrealistic film. My dad and Dehart went to Hollywood for 2-3 weeks to help them edit, and try to keep some of the authenticity. But when he got back, he told me that the best racing movie ever was on the floor in the editing room. I still love the Days of Thunder but Rush is my favorite racing movie.

OMG 😍😍 this movie! I fell in love with it instantly. My mum regretted getting me this for my birthday when it was released. It was on a constant playback in our house. I couldn’t sleep unless this movie was on! I’d have been 5 years old when I got it, from then until I was around 8 I watched it at least 4 times a week. I was already captivated by motor racing and cars. But this movie introduced me to NASCAR, I’m 33 now and I still watch it at least once a month. More in the off season. I’ll have it playing in the background while tidying the house or something. It’s kind of like my security blanket. The release of this movie gave NASCAR in Australia a bit of a boost as well. The series were almost dead after Bob Jane’s huge investment into the oval at Calder Park thunder dome but this sparked interest and kept it alive for a few more years, it was kinda dead before the inception of V8 Supercars but with that series getting proper marketing and sponsors it killed NASCAR in Australia. We have 2 paved ovals, one replicating Milwaukee in Adelaide in a state of disrepair and Calder which replicated Charlotte also almost unusable.

I think nascar was on a downward slope, and recent changes aren't going to help the sport grow. NASCAR was at its best when it didn't have all the rules the cartoon chase format it has now and had tough drivers. With nascar going political you think that is going to help the sport it sure helped the NFL. I believe true racing now you will only find at the dirt track or drag strip.

growing up as a kid i raced in QMA and was the 3rd generation of my family to do so. this movie was on our television all the time because of this and i loved it, still do. yes, parts of it are cheesy, but i remember dreaming about being Cole Trickle and racing in Nascar at its highest level. as a kid who loved racing and watched every race with my dad in the late 90s and early 2000s, this was a perfect movie to me. watching old races i wasnt alive for like the 89 Darlington race and seeing that #46 city chevy car always puts a smile on my face. at one point i could almost quote the whole movie to you i had seen it so many times. Nicole Kidman's "let me out of the car!" always made me laugh and i didnt understand why, and now having an Australian partner i totally get why. i wish i could speak to Hans Zimmer about this movie because he never brings it up and ive never found even one interview about it, because as a musician i love the music in this movie. that main theme in the opening shots of Daytona still makes me instantly think of those great days of 90s Nascar and days hanging out at the local track waiting for my race to be called. i wish he didnt hate it, because it was a huge part of my childhood. i would love to see a movie made like this today set in that era with a proper marvel sized budget. make it about a real driver and really try to recreate that era in modern clarity. i think it would be awesome

While we’re still under caution I want you to go out and hit the pace car! Hit the pace car? Hit the pace car! Why? You hit every other god damn thing out there I want you to be perfect! OMG lol This is definitely my favorite movie. My oldest brother which he’s gone now bought me the movie the one year for Christmas. We would watch this movie together and site every word. I watch it now for the memories of my brother. Definitely makes me think of him. Tom Cruise has always been my favorite actor. Thanks for the revisit of this movie. Definitely took me back sitting with my brother and watching it. Thank you!!!!

My favorite theme park had a ride best on this movie in early and to mid 90’s . I remember going to park one time with my family and all we did was ride Day Of Thunder all day long. I take turns ride with my cousins because I was to young to ride myself at the time .

I've been dying to find the actual film they used in that ride, somewhere, ANYWHERE. I rode it all day long at Paramount's Carowinds and then when I was 9 they replaced it with 007 I WAS SOOOO PISSED.

This is the show that introduced me into Nascar. A friend and I went to see the movie Gremlins 2 during the previews we saw the trailer to Days of Thunder. We ran out of the Gremlins movie and went into the Day's of Thunder movie. I was a Nascar fan from then till Dale Jr. retired. Sadly, today Nascar is just not the same as what it was.

I actually got to see these cars in my tour of the garage area Daytona International Speedway when I was just a kid. That was when filming was going on. The vivid colors of the cars, the tropical heat, the seagulls and the smell of sea air and a massive outdoor colosseum with banks as high as three-story houses, it's what got me interested to check out the sport. When the movie came out, it captured that same essence.

Saw it as a kid in theaters. Was fascinated and got the nes game and a couple match box style replica cars that were available in kids meals at Hardee's. I saw it once again a long time ago and thought it was entertaining. Not a NASCAR fan but definitely helped my interest in other motorsports.

I was 10 at the time when this movie came out. I didnt start watching nascar and its entire race schedule till '92. What got me the most was the sounds, the speed, and the colors that made this movie so awesome to me as a kid. I didnt care for the storyboard though as I couldnt follow the romance and adults talking. However, as I got older those one liners like 'dropping the hammer Harry!' And 'perfect spec tires' made my freinds who weren't into racing a fan of the movie as well. I still remember days after the movie was released my mom bought me a a Days of Thunder white tshirt that had the #46 superflo car in neon green outline with the Hendrick Motorsports logo on it and I thought how cool is that, I'm a official race fan!

Nice job on that doc. Really enjoyed it. I am a HUGE DOT fan. I was at one of the first races that they filmed at. The 1989 Checker 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. The Exxon and City Chevrolet Luminas were there. That was when I fell in love with what it still my favorite stock car. The City Chevy Lumina. As a model car builder. Well of course I have built the model. And I still have a promo poster of the Exxon car that I one day hope to go to a convention just to meet Micheal Rooker and to have him sign it AS Rowdy Burns. And yes of course. I was there on opening day. I cannot believe it has been 30 years

Cheesy dialog and cornball emotional storylines, but the pageantry, the racing action and rich colorfulness of the sport is what they were trying to convey. I’d say they succeeded pretty well...

Love it or hate the soundtrack, it was literally iconic for Nascar at the time. I actually think that, as much as Talledega Nights was super great, I wonder how much nascar would've been better off if there was a more serious modern Days of Thunder type movie. Call it what you will but Days of Thunder simply helped add excitement and a sort of legitimacy for nascar at the time and actually made nascar fans. I just hate that nascar has been in a bad decline for a while now and can only wonder what a much better movie for nascar in the mid 00's would've looked like.

Man I love this moving . It’s a guilty pleasure of mine . I first saw it at the drive in when I was 11. I don’t even like NASCAR . But growing up here in the NC my Father did . I’ve seen this movie countless times. Every time it’s on TV I watch certain parts . To the point where my wife leaves the room😂. It’s a lotta fun . It always has been to me. QT is right about this movie I think. I remember when Paramount owed Carowinds ( a theme park in Charlotte). They had one of those theater rides where you got to take the last few laps as Cole. Good times man !
