Wow, Arcane is good! I'm sorry for not getting into it sooner! Winning some well-deserved awards for being one of the best video game adaptations to the big screen of all time! I am just enamored by the art style, and the writing, the cinematography all of it is just brilliant! So with that in mind, which scene is the best? The Scene That Changed Netflix's Arcane... It's the origin story of course. The time jump!

My favorite TV show, hands down. HOWEVER, you did miss part of Silco's motivation for taking in Powder. Yes, Silco is twisted and sees a powerful tool here, but his facial expression when he looks at Vander says it all, as explained in the flashbacks during Silco and Vander's fight: He sees Powder now as a parallel of himself, someone with good intentions being abandoned by a sibling at the hour of greatest need. Vander did the same thing to him in his eyes, and he is overcome with sympathy for Powder. It's what drives his later arc in the show, where his love for Jinx as his adopted daughter clashes with his villainous ambition. (also yes Victor best character)

Correct, even though he’s willing to do anything to earn freedom his people, Silco sympathizes with powder in that moment. She physically and metaphorically disarms him… it wasn’t because he wanted to manipulate Jinx, it’s because he saw himself in her

Agreed. It is not Malice which motivates his actions... but twisted Compassion. A compassion that only grows as the show goes on with him coming to see her more and more as the cornerstone of his Ideology made manifest. Silco has all the trappings of a Born again Preacher... and she is the 'Pure Savoior' of Zaun he envisages, the true Freedom of Zaun made manifest. ...a heavy load on her back.

Something that’s not really pointed out is that Jinx’s monkey bomb was ALWAYS cruel and harsh. As a bomb before the arcane gems she used to fill it with NAILS, a BOMB. Filled with NAILS. That she would chuck at another child. She’s always had a certain lack of empathy and lack of understand of her tools being overkill

She was a child. Vi should have recognized that the bombs were dangerous. But she encouraged them. She even said "I have these (hands) and you have them (the bombs)". I know Vi was still young, but Vander and her had the responsibility to teach Powder that bombs are dangerous. Ofc it is is kind of understood that they lived in a dangerous area, and Powder being small and young needed some kind of protection. They also saw the bombs as inoffensive since they didn't worked and just made a small glitter puff. But if even they cannot see it, Powder had no idea how dangerous they could have been. After Silco she no longer cared. I feel Powder would have been not dangerous at all in another circumstances. If she lived in Piltover she would have been a scientist, maybe a chemist who liked to make small explotions.
@afterfake13
@afterfake13 Жыл бұрын
She did not have many other options. She’s smaller than the other child and has to make a weapon out of junk. I suppose a nail gun would be less cruel and harsh. Though a bomb does seem much easier to make than a gun. Gun is just very precise bomb.

2:46 Exactly. I've been discussing that very same thing before with someone, but she denied Jinx was already showing some mental problems before episode 4. she thought it was all the fault of Silco. She thought that behavior you show there was "normal for a kid left alone". Ermm... well... I can't speak for her upbringing, but it's far beyond normal in my book; it's quite hysterical. It's pretty much clear that the creators hinted she already had the seeds of mental instability back then, as you correctly surmised.

Tragic as it is, I love how this scene plays with your expectations. It gets you to root for Powder as she realizes she can use the hex crystals to help her friends, seemingly building up to a heroic turn of the tide with her bomb... only for that massive explosion to do more harm than good.

It's in my top 3 animated shows ever in the blink of an eye, and I could make an argument where it's #1. For a show about a game I not only don't play, but have heard nothing great about from a psychology standpoint, this show made me cry. And I NEVER have cried at an animated show, period. The Monkey Bomb scene broke a stoic guy who felt like animated stuff isn't able to be super deep, and that should say a lot. Watching Vi realize that Powder killed her adoptive Dad and 2 brothers in a misguided attempt to help, goddamn. It's brutal stuff.
@Barmaglott17

Hard disagree on your take that it was only malice what made Silco to make his decision. Wander was like a brother to him. Who, from his POV, betrayed and "left" him. So looking at Wander's body and hearing "she is not my sister anymore". it's kinda obvious what he thinks. "She is just like me". There is not so much malicious intent here. But even a good intentions coming from such a vile person can do more harm than good. And from here came all his attempts to "help her". To "make her strong". To make her walk the path *he* went. But where he was broken, delusional and straight up evil Jinx is, first a foremost, just mentally ill. Silco refused to see it, because it would've crashed his "perfect picture" of her, and that eventually made his downfall.

I have never played League of Legends at all *(from what I've heard, it seems I'm not missing much)* but Arcane really surprised me on how amazing the show really is. The characters, the animation, the worldbuilding! Everything is so masterfully written and takes full advantage of the medium! If the future of the show keeps the same quality, Arcane may be one of the absolute best cartoons ever created.

Yeah that’s both a good and a bad thing. The bad thing is because it’s a moba game it’s very hard for the game devs to be able to tell stories about that world, in this respect they’ve utilized short cinematics and written stories to help tell about the world but the good thing that results out of this is that they created arcane as a better way to tell stories about this universe. I would not recommend playing the game if you are simply interested in the story though for reasons mentioned above and that’s okay. MOBA’s are notoriously known to be complicated games to get into and not everyone enjoys that game type and that’s okay. All I’ve ever asked of people who want to see more is to just look at the cinematics and stories. There’s a treasure trove of good content for you to go through!

It's not worth it to play League of Legends now. Not only because of the toxic players but because they developed the game to make it harder. So it'll be really tough to get into now. Which is an odd choice since despite getting lots of hate for it being an easy game at it's inception that was one of the things that made it so fun and successful for an extraordinary number of players. Now it is not fun unless you have a freakish aptitude for pixel perfect hand-eye coordination. But once upon a decade ago it was the must play.

This whole sequence, for those who "knew" Jinx from her teaser video back in 2013 ("Get Jinxed") and from the game, has so much meaning. Everyone from the start was expecting her to be Vi's sister (at the moment of her release into the game it was not confirmed but there was a lot of hints of that) but no-one knew what pushed her to become this crazy person, to fall into madness... Until that sequence and that final "look" in her eye with this pink glow that foreshadowed everything.... Just a masterpiece.

Honestly? If you think Silco was manipulating Jinx, you were not paying attention. Silco explained earlier how him and Vander were essentially brothers, but something happened that caused Silco to feel completely betrayed and abandoned by him. Upon hearing Jinx say that she was abandoned by her own sister, Silco immediately became endeared to her, cause he saw himself in her.

@@SpectacleSpark I think he genuinely believes he's helping her. He teaches her the lessons he learned, but he's always given her space. He tries to be patient with her and wants for her to become the person that she is meant to. I think what a lot of people miss is that powder wasnt forced to become jinx. She is jinx from the beginning and she just wanted someone to accept her even if she fucks up. That's why it hit me really hard when silco's last words were she's perfect. Jinx realised that those are words that will never come out of Vi's mouth. Now, is this moral in our society? Absolutely not. But Silco was a great father to Jinx.

Yeah, Silco is a super complex and complicated antagonist. She literally kills him, and despite seeing this and knowing that it was because of who she knew he was, he spent his dying breath telling her it wasn't her fault, and that she's perfect. That was heavy, and convinced me that he didn't take her in as some rock paper scissors type tying against his enemy. He saw something with her, maybe a bit of himself, and didn't fault her for her flaws. This show ruled, like man the more I think about it, the more I love it. Silco/Jinx is like a modern Scorpion and the Frog Greek allegory, but when Jinx stabbed him on the trip across the river, Silco just hugged her and said " I knew you'd do this, honey, and it's OK. I hope you find meaning in my ability to ferry you to begin with." That's heavy.

Yay Arcane chat! 2 diffs of opinion. 1) Silco doesn't want to kill the kids, he wants to put Vander on shimmer and hold the kids hostage cause we see threats to family as how Silco controls powerful people later in the show. 2) Goodbye is for Vi: "sound of a heartbeat before it goes out" is Vi watching Vander die. " I can see a tear on my father's face".. "how could I have ever let you down" are references to Vander being Vi's role model. Set up the time skip; "I got steel in my hands".. "return like warriors I swear that we'll find glory up ahead" = Vi returning, eventually with the gauntlets, to kick ass. "Where is my home".."where is my friend"; Powder has been living at the last drop and fighting Echo all along but Vi is returning after years away.

In regards to your comments about powder possibly having mental health issues prior to the ending of episode 3 this is what I have to say; it is heavily implied that powder suffers from heavy attachment issues as she is constantly seeking VI’s approval and acknowledgment. Powder is constantly trying to show others in the series that she is capable and helpful, so being told that she’s not ready “ie not skilled/good enough” hits her really hard from the perspective of self esteem but also because she subconsciously feels like she’s getting “abandoned” by Vi. This is why she feels super betrayed by Vi at the end of episode 3. Notice how she says “why did you leave me?” And in this moment the very person she turns to when she desperately needs support is the very same person who is “rejecting” her. When Vi leaves she believes she has no one else to turn to and literally latches onto the first thing that comes across her, Silco and it is the reason why she angrily cries “she left me, she is not my sister anymore.” Only when you understand that framework about her attachment issues does it start to make sense about why Powder said those things. Vi did the one thing she fears the most, thinking Violet abandoned her completely and is one of the major pieces of what causes Powder to turn into the Jinx we know

I think we also forget that she already had to deal with the loss of her parents as did Vi but was so much younger and whilst Vi understood what happened fully, Powder has to have felt the loss differently and is terrified by the thought of losing Vi also - the only true family she has left. To feel that way then be , in her eyes abandoned by Vi would be too much to bear
@actuallynotsteve
@actuallynotsteve Жыл бұрын
I've dated girls who have abandonment issues, and Powder/Jinx checks all the boxes from what I've seen. Not judging those that have this trait, but a lot of their behavior is stemmed like "you left us, and made us grow up all on our own!" No amount of saying that you yourself won't just leave them without good reason can compensate, and it makes them toxic in the way this show outlines.

Another detail that I never noticed until this rewatch is how Powder's explosion is why Singed (the mad scientist working for Silco) has his face half burnt and always covers it in the show after this scene. This was also something that I think wasn't explained in League's base lore either. His mouth covering was kinda just taken as a part of his character, probably the result of some horrifying experiment. For it to be a result of this scene is pretty cool. It's also interesting how the explosion that caused Singed to need to cover his face also resulted in his greatest creation (Warwick) by killing Vander.

Additional cool stuff. Powder/Jinx’s eyes turn purple when she “goes evil”, purple being a motif for the more nebulous evil of the show. Silco feels a kinship with Jinx in how she was “betrayed” by her found family, much like he was. Their is a decent amount of set up here for later parts of the show but another big one is that the last thing Powder sees of Clagger are his glasses which stay are used to denote him for a good portion of her life going forward.

The audio design is not the first clue to Powder's mental state. It's actually the first scene of the show itself. We see her visualize those scratchy markings over the faces of the dead as well as the Enforcers even back then. 22:37 and yeah, there's no universe where the expression that Silco has at that moment is 'malice'. 22:34 Don't totally agree with that one, though. Yes, that he could use her probably was one aspect, but... when he looks to Vander's corpse, he does so in self-contemplation, more than in anger or vengeful. In essence, it wasn't malice, nor to give a middlefinger to Vander, but rather the situation of Jinx struck an accord with him due to the similarities, whereby he felt betrayed by his "brother" and cut ties with him, and she felt betrayed by her sister and didn't consider Vi to be her sister anymore. The parallels were pretty clear, I thought, so I'm a bit surprised you missed that.

It's not just best VG adaptation ever, it's in the convo for best animated series ever. I'm a grown man who has not once cried about an aminated show, but the end of E3 absolutely broke me. If I ever need to cry on command, I can fire up the monkey bomb scene and fire up the waterworks. This show had no right being as good as it was, but here we are. It's set in a universe we may not fully know, but the themes are universal, and seeing Powder accidentally kill most of her family in a misguided but sincere attempt to help, and then get decked by Vi, it's chef's kiss stuff. Also - I really enjoyed how the show made Vi/Kaitlin so normalized that it didn't even have a single moment where they went "hey everybody, it's two GIRLS who are in love, isn't that weird!?" and thus just made it seem like any pairing of any two characters who like each other is accepted, like that's the world I want to see. That it's such a standard thing in the Arcane universe, that Kaitlin's parent's only care about if her feelings are getting hurt, chef's kiss from me. The Mom even encourages to go win her back, and we get zero preaching about the nature of it, that's what I've wanted forever. You love who you love, and that's OK. Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. We only get one go-around on this crazy space rock, be true to yourself.

Also, I don't believe Silco's intention was to manipulate Powder out of spite for Vander, I instead think it's due to him recognizing himself in Powder's position. Neither his facial expressions, nor his words or his character would hint at his desire to manipulate her, as much as care for her. (Although he still is the worst father ever, except for unconditionally loving Jinx.)

It wasn't malice that Silco took Jinx in, it's him seeing himself in her. When he and his brother had a falling out in ideologies, Vander almost killed Silco out of anger, and though he did not in the end this severed the relationship. When Jinx said that Vi was "not her sister" it just clicked for Silco. Silco is still evil, but like all characters in Arcane, he has layers. That's one of Arcane's greatest strengths, if you delve deep enough you can still hate their actions, but you can see the reasoning, even if you disagree with the choices or conclusions.

Silco did not take Jinx out of malice. He empathized with her and truly fell in love with her as his daughter. Jinx is Silco's daughter, Vi is Vanders. Silco eventually comes to understand Vander through his experience raising Jinx.

Jinx is absolutely a protagonist. The protagonist is just who the story follows, through whom we get out perspective and narrative. Vi and Jinx are the absolute protagonists on the Xaun arc. Jayce and Victor of the Piltover arc. Normally one would call the good guy a protagonist and the bad one Antagonist but as far as I know this is not a required criteria, a bad guy can still be the protaonist. I assume the separate titles is to simplyfy things. What you could arguably say is that Jinx is also an Antagonist. She has very many feet in very many different camps.

The only thing I disagree with you on is Silco’s reasoning for taking in Powder. It wasn’t a final f-you to Vander. He genuinely empathized with what she said and was going through. When he told her it was going to be okay, he meant it. Because now she was with someone who could understand her pain. Someone who could help her show them all.
@poneill65

How on earth did you get "malice" from Silco's reaction to Powder? The animator's did an extraordinary job showing his confusion (darting eyes) followed by his clear moment "surrender/release" (of those feelings) with him realizing his shared trauma with Powder (Power has been abandoned by the same "family" in the form of Vi/Vander). He then switches from foe/killer to kindred/protector. He's not a super-cyborg instantaneously plotting out his nefarious plan to exploit her in the moment. That's, a) absurd, and b) not supported by a single facial expression in the scene. If the animators wanted us to divine that internal motivation they would have given us just one micro-expression justifying that. They're clearly capable of that. But they didn't, they gave us the exact opposites. Also, Silco's cohort/crew are clearly not standing by "judgingly". They're clearly unsettled by the child's distress and sudden attachment to Silco (or at minimum, a boss acting unexpectedly). Even the tattoo guy's down-turning gaze belies any hostile/judgmental thoughts. That's a masterfully subtle "what am I doing" signal more clear than if the animators had made him shout it out. He/they went in there in kill mode and were suddenly shocked out of that and forced to see a child in distress, not a target. I'm not sure you process facial expressions like the rest of us,.. apologies if it is a "spectrum" thing. Otherwise, nice job!

I played for a decade, I had a girlfriend. I just made her play it too. She was bitter about it the first like three or four times. Then she started recognicing items and remember at least some parts to build. The dopamine hit of achievment hit her straight in the face and amonth later she was nagging me to play with her.

This series fascinates me. Idk if I have access to my sister's Netflix anymore, since streaming services are trying to crack down on sharing accounts. Also, I thought LoL was a medieval-themed game. Maybe cause I frequently got it mixed up with WoW. I still refuse to play it, though. The toxic community is a meme at this point.

Disagree on the Silco part. He hates Vander yes but he doesn't do this out of malice. His goal would always be freedom of zaun and Vander is just another traitor to the cause. In Powder he saw another him who just got betrayed by someone that could be considered a sibling. Feeling that she is like a kindred spirit he took her in. The ironic twist is that after taking her in he starts to understand Vander and gives up on the revolution for the same reason Vander did, for his daughter.

I think youre wrong about Silco, He didnt take Powder in as some last F you to Vander. He was an abolute pragmatic, a consequentialist, any means necessary to achieve your goal. Vander is dead, Silco wouldnt waste his time and energy on sticking it to a dead guy. He was absolutely gonna kill Powderm he only needed to know where Vi was before he did as he needed them ALL gone for his plan to work, claiming Vander ahd fled, EVERYONE would know that was BS if the kids were still around cuz he would never leave them. Powder saying her sister abandoned her connected with Silco ona very deep level. You can see the emotion, confusion and pain all over his face as his eyes darts aroung before finally landing on Vanders dead body. He saw himself in Powder, being betrayed and backstabbed by you older sibling and for once in his life he could relate to another person and even empathize. ,

This will probably sound monstrous of me. But ... Arcane should have only one more season. This is a sublime piece of art and works as well as it does because of its brevity. They created a 3-act-masterpiece, and I feel that if this were given multiple seasons, the story would quickly lose its grittiness and intensity. Give it one more season for the showdown between Piltover and Zaun, conclude the character arcs of Jinx, Vi, Ekko, Heimerdinger, Viktor etc. And then let it end.
