I’m fostering Mangrove monitor, stray found outside by animal services. Pretty wild and feral. He was spitting any hissing at me, launching, 7 days in he comes out when he sees me, he grabs food from the tongs. I’d say it’s a pretty good progress, for a feral lizard.

Thank you for putting in the Savannah monitor on the list! My boy is now almost 4 years old. I love him like no other but definitely hate the importation of them!!!! 8x4x4 isn't large enough. I wish we could stop the import of them. The heartbreak is REAL.

Yeaaa no ik 14 and they are a hugeee responsible a lot more then tegus and some other monitors just because they are a little difficult to tame and just to feed insects get expensive, try some smaller reptiles like a bearded dragons or leopard geckos, ik it's kinda dumb taking advice from a 14 yr old, but your just gonna have to trust me that a bearded dragon would be your best bet they are big enough to not get hurt like the leos and are easy to tame, my mother never let me have any animals or reptiles until a while ago now I have 35+ reptiles, my favorite are monitors

I am totally guilty of buying a savannah monitor on impulse and with no knowledge. My little buddy was cheap but he is the most expensive member of my home. It took almost two years to fully tame him. I can say from my experience savannah monitors are not for beginners and not for someone who has a limited income.

So I've got 3 savanna monitor lizards, 2 mangrove monitors, and had 1 spiny neck.....my savannas definitely pack the most attitude, my mangroves have a nasty bite and my spiny was just a spaz lol. But they're all such incredible animals. They're super smart animals, I've got my one sav who's got big attitude for his little self lol. So I found puzzle feeders and a child's activity thing with zippers on it help keep him enriched and it helps with the attitude. all three were wild caught and then when they couldn't be handled they got dumped at my doorstep. I'm known in my area for my love of animals and willingness to help any way I can. Now I don't take in everything I'm not a hoarder, I help find places and such but I also take on some. Well it's been 2 years with my female 1 year with the one male and 7 months with my fiesty little guy. They have all tamed down pretty nice, not without lots of work and a few battle wounds lol. But I have been wanting to work with one species to master my knowledge and help with the info on them. I have seen savs listed as "the worst" because of the history they have being wild caught. So I e kind of really started to work with them a lot more and hope in a few years of can get my own channel going dedicated to savanna monitors :) I truly love all animals ... Thanks for sharing :)

I keep a savannah monitor, and I agree they do not make good pets. You are certainly right about conflicting information as far as husbandry, nobody seems to agree. Not to mention their attitudes are generally terrible if they're in the correct environment and not being over stressed by the keeper, unless they've had a lot of time working with the keeper. Curious why croc monitors didn't make the list though. I'm assuming just because they're expensive and uncommon?

Croc monitors I would put on here also for the bite force of those (yeah i know they're not an impulse buy). Their mouths are NO JOKE and they seem to have a harder time taming down from my personal experience. Now a giant lizard with giant teeth who is aggro to you is a bit intimidating.

Perhaps you could (or could have had) Crocodile Monitor on your list at either #2 or #1. I would probably say both Croc and Nile tied for worst pet Varanid due to their very high defensive nature. But as we know... It all depends on how good the keeper is and that every individual animal has a different personality (character).

If they were available in the pet trade, they would actually be fairly easy to manage, as every zoo that has them has managed to "tame" them through target training and operant conditioning. They're just hard to accommodate as far as temperature, lighting and food needs, and of course size of their quarters.

Mangrove monitors are those that if worked with are actually worth keeping if done right. Ofc this can not not be done if you don’t get them as hatchlings. As a previous owner, what you’ll want to do is daily interactions. That is a very important step. They err al skittish the first time. So either have them setup close to human activity. Have them see you give them food. They will eat shrimp, crabs, squids, red meats, fish, poultry and insects. Keep interacting by watching them move while they watch you. It’s not easy but the greatest sign that your mangrove is trusting you is associating you with food by scratching up against the glass to your position. If the mangrove doesn’t do this yet and hides don’t worry, boredom will get the better of it. It’ll take three months to get it used to you. From the one I used to have, it literally became dog tame. It’ll follow where I am, it’ll sleep in my shirt on my shoulder, I can leave it unattended outside while it pancakes, it’ll hunt down the roaches in my house. Unfortunately loud noise and cats/dogs will make it nervous. And make sure chickens aren’t present around hatchlings as I found out, they are capable of drowning their prey. Mine had an outdoor enclosure. A baby chick was left in the enclosure because they were feeding on the scraps left by my lizard. Note this monitor was still hatchling/juvenile. Went to check one day and saw a dead one being ravaged by my monitor. Covered the enclosure with a screen. Next time I caught the action when the chickens broke into the enclosure with the monitor grabbing the chick’s head and forcing it into its swimming water. Guess chickens can’t hold their breath. By the time I took the baby chick, was was too late. The monitor had a really tight grip. Then I noticed worms coming out of the eye of the chick. So note I said you can feed poultry but not local ones cause they do tend to have parasites. Other than all that mangroves are skittish but if given the effort are clingy and pretty cunning. Plus you have to admit, they are the only ones to hunt fish is deep water and can live a coastal lifestyle due to it being able to excrete salt from it’s eyes like saltwater crocodiles. Plenty of them here in Guam so I lucked out. Favorite monitor species. Varanus Indicus.

So I have doreanus (Blue tails) Personally blue tail monitors are my favorite species to own. They're very different than other species with behavior and feeding habits But without a doubt they earn a place on this list, I would never recommend this species to own. They aren't vicious animals, and honestly not really big on biting. They display a lot with their mouths open but really don't go for a bite which is interesting to me. Will they bite? Absolutely 100% they will if they choose and even from smaller individuals a bite from them will ruin your day. If your passionate for the species then yes I recommend it but you have to know what comes with them.

I feel like the problem with savs isn’t the animals but the keepers. The animals themselves are pretty friendly, yes there’s not as much info out there for them as there is for some other animals, but the problem is the people who get them cos they’re ‘cool’ & don’t really think about what they need and whether they can provide it

Number 3 Marten's Monitor if you can even find them. Though moderately sized for a monitor they are semi aquatic which means you end up adding the work and space needed for a pond in their enclosure. Anything that size that is semi aquatic means you basically need a small bedroom with about half of it being a pond to truly house it in an appropiate fashion.

Crocs are pretty good to tame due to their intelligence. Their bite is super nasty, but the chance a keeper gets bitten is minimal. This to the fact that every croc keeper probably is an advanced keeper. The price is also an important factor I guess. Komodos aren't kept in captivity (beside some zoo's) so that wouldn't be a realistic entry on the list imo.

My sav is the best monitor I’ve ever owned. She is well behaved and easy to care for in comparison to my Nile. She had an attitude when she was young but with a lot of attention and building trust that I’m not a threat , she tamed down fast. As have all of my monitors. The cost is what makes keeping them so bad. And people not researching them and knowing their ability and financial limits. I feed year round and offer a variety. Eggs , rodents , fish , and insects / worms. She’s not overweight because I let her roam and play with her so she is exercised. Walks during the spring , summer , and fall. I don’t think their temperaments are that bad. I’ve owned 3. All tamed down fast and well.

I totally disagree with most points you made about Mangrove monitors. I visit Morchit animal market in Bangkok twice a week, Just about every reptile you can think of is for sale here. I see and handle most monitors. Mangroves bite less than most are far easier to tame than tree or Argus monitors and a long way from shy. Keep in mind most of the animals I meet are captive farmed, but I would far more confident with a young mangrove than a young water monitor or black dragon, Tree monitors maybe the worse and I see green , blue and black most months. Even one or two of the young Niles are ok. If I had the space and the time I would go for a Nile. There is a great croc available at the moment which would be very tempting for some!. Overall though I am more than happy with my female mangrove a great size and the only monitor I know with a bright blue tongue.

I'm not gonna down vote just because you said savannah monitors or bad pets. Trust me I know from first hand they are a hand full. I have a baby savannah and it's hard. You gotta earn their trust and they're hard to feed in the beginning. Yes yes yes there is a problem with people impulse buying them. Sure they're good sized but their bite crunches bone so you HAVE to be ready to spend a boat load of your time getting them socialized with you especially if they're import like mine was. I, however, did my research after I saw one and decided I wanted one. I did the same with my python. You have to research and decide if you're willing to set aside hours of your day going in for 20 minutes and sitting with them and also having the balls to set your hand in there with them while looking away. Trust me it's heart pounding as even when small they can take a chunk out. I did all the research and still got him. His name is merlin and I love him already. But people don't do their research and become overwhelmed or just don't take care of them and it's extremely sad when they get fatty liver disease as it's very painful for them. All in all, great video and people just please do your research before deciding to buy a savannah.

I guess I broke the mold, I impulse bought both a Savannah monitor and a Nile monitor and my Savannah is in a 8'x4'x4' enclosure and the Nile is still very small and is in a 66"x28"x28" enclosure and both have adequate heat and uvb and are doing AMAZING as far as health goes

This is only my opinion I believe that a lot of those species are more for advanced keepers and not so much for normal people that don't have experience but I think that the Savannah monitors are the sweetest of all monitors but they do require a lot of space and a lot of heat and I don't think that people should buy anything that's alive out of impulse I think people should do a research before buying anything

I don't think the animals are bad themselves I believe it's the keepers that do not understand what they're doing anything called monitor lizard or alligator lizard or a tegu all of them have really nasty bites I believe people should understand what they're doing

A hatchling monitor can stay in a 40 gallon for about 6 months till you can build them a custom enclosure so don't get the smart ass comment on that haha this video is rubbish if you put in time with them you will do fine its about consistency
