It's one of the inherent weaknesses/flaws of mainstream American Comics. The characters exist in a suspended state of existence and don't have a normal line of continuity. It is practically impossible to put full stock behind future era characters and settings because it calls for the entire universe to capitulate to the existence of said future character/setting. It's much easier to promote a "successor" character if they exist and are involved during the time of the flagship hero like Milles, Wally, Dick Grayson etc. Terry McGinnis is the best successor to the mantle of Batman and the best successor in American comic culture but will never get the shine he is due unless DC has the balls to do a 2nd future state or something simular to what Marvel legacy was doing (teasing wild ass and impending future plot lines as a consequence and continuation of present day mainline stories.)

No kidding; it was what, 2014, when Friedle and Conroy did that 75th anniversary short? That was 13+ years after the show's final season, yet they knew the power of it's nostalgia. This video's narrator is right; the DC execs are seriously stupid if they don't try to at least do the spiderverse style project as an independent universe project, separate from the live action cinematic one. Such film could have Keaton voice act Bruce, and maybe Friedle too(in 1 capacity or another), and serve to test the waters. The nostalgia of one or both them alone as the starring characters would ensure get you filled up theaters' seats.

Passing on the Arkham game was the right choice. They wanted to go with Damian over Terry. This would’ve been terrible considering that Terry is the reason people love Batman Beyond, and Damian is very disliked. That aside, it also would’ve been awkward because Terry fights and even just traverses Neo Gotham very differently from Bruce, so it would be better to not even try and pass it off as the same game had they followed through on a Batman Beyond game at all.

Look at how many people gave kill the justice league a chance and that game was born a disaster. As far as gameplay, Terry is a martial artist just like Batman. I don't see how it would be that different. They already incorporate a bunch of different styles with all of the other playable characters in the series. They could easily do that with Terry. Yeah the traversal would have to change but there is zero reason for that to be a barrier to the game being made.

I think Terry is the true successor to batman. Unlike all the other batfamilies, terry isn't another sidekick, he's a whole new batman. Example is when he fought the joker, bruce of course deals with joker on multiple occasions, but with his allies, he treats them as pawns. But when he fought against terry, he was going up against a batman he wasn't familiar with.

Tim doesn't feel right because he never wanted to STAY a vigilante, there's been so many times where it's brought up that he just doesn't see himself continuing this into adulthood, and his futures as Batman all tend to be pretty bleak. Though i will say that more than Damian, Cassandra was INTRODUCED being set up as a proper successor to Batman, if DC editorial wasn't so obsessed with only having 1 Batgirl and making that 1 Barbara, writing Cass out because they couldnt understand why a dissabled asian character had such a prominent role & refusing to use her for the majority of the New 52 then we MIGHT'VE gotten some actual stories exploring that.

Heres my theory for why the industry doesn’t like Batman Beyond that nobody asked for, but to sum it up, the decision makers don’t like risky change. The “higher ups” don’t want to abandon Bruce Wayne and give the mantle of the Bat to anybody else. That in itself is a huge risk and would break the pattern they’ve had for decades. Beyond is more so of a “niche” for Batman fans, and they likely think that just because we like it, doesn’t mean the larger public will. Additionally they probably don’t like Terry. Terry shows the audience that basically anybody could be Batman. This would “devalue” Batman in the eyes of directors or whoever’s making the decision. I’m sure this was a message that the people in charge of the Batman Beyond Animated movie wanted to send like they did in Spiderverse. They likely don’t want to move on from Batman, at least for a long while unless Batman begins getting continuously slandered online. Bruce Wayne as Batman is mandatory in order for show runners or whatever to put trust into a Batman related project. Lastly, the setting of Beyond causes Batmans rogue gallery to essentially be gone. Batmans pantheon of villains have all proven to be recognisable and are arguably as important as Batman. They want to see Penguin, Two Face, Mr Freeze, and of course, Joker, who btw has no real impact on Beyond, further discouraging franchisors from giving their approval on Beyond. Beyond also has Bruce heal from his trauma, and a Bruce Wayne that moves on is not a Bruce Wayne that show runners want. If he does move on, there’s less interesting things to “write with” essentially. This is why Spiderman gets his life bent over and rawdogged with no lube in every movie or show other than Spiderverse. Honestly when you think about it Spiderverse is such a goated and genius movie. They broke the generic thought process these inauthentic and unimaginative creators had and literally said “imma do my own thing”, but that’s another topic.

At this point, I’m kinda convinced WB is doing everything in their power to stick to a formula for live action solo Batman movies. Batman 89, The Nolan Films, BvS, and The Batman were hit movies and portrayed Batman as a loner in action. Ignoring the up and down quality of these movies, they made a lot of money. WB would rather stick to what they know makes money instead of doing something new like a solo Nightwing flick or a live action Under The Red Hood movie, which sucks because those would go so hard and be a taste of fresh air after what we’ve been getting over and over and over again.

I am skeptical that WB is ever going to give Terry Mcginnis the respect he deserves. Most executives think that if these popular characters don't directly translate to money, then these characters don't deserve any adaptations or their own games. The worst part about it though is that underrepresented characters can't make money, so they are passed up on opportunities to be represented causing this cycle, where most characters won't ever leave.

If anything, the Arkham games had a golden opportunity to bring Terry McGinnis in, with everyone thinking him to be dead, terry can have a great backstory. He meets Bruce in hiding years after the Knightfall protocol and defend him from holligans and then be given the job as normal, but he would have both Batman & Alfred this time, and be able to work directly with oracle, robin, Jim (now as the mayor) and occasionally dick, and if motives are right maybe Jason, this is something we never did get with McGinnis since he was much younger then the entire bat family, but to make him only 10-15 years younger then dick would make it interesting to see him interact with the entire bat family

This is one of the exceptions where having someone else take up the mantle of a character actually works. A huge part of what helped us accept a new character for Batman is simply that this isn’t supposed to be THE Batman. This Batman has a different suit that is way more futuristic technology-based and has more personality beyond brooding. The feel is so different that it opens the door for something new to be explored. Plus, setting it in the far future helped set it apart. And the best part is that this show honors the legacy of Bruce Wayne and Batman (with some exceptions). He maybe old but he’s still competent and masculine for his old age, and I bought this is what Bruce would be like beyond his prime years. Where so many other attempts to replace a character in their mantle goes wrong is that they’re literally trying to replace them when there’s no way that they can. In fact, the better way to put it is that Bruce Wayne is THE Batman. Terry McGinnis is Batman Beyond.

The last time Terry was the center-focus being in "Return of the Joker" is extra sad because the whole point of that movie is that everyone, from Bruce to Joker, doesn't think Terry is worthy of being Batman. And the big cathartic moment is Terry proving he is Batman, just his own version of Batman. A Batman who fights dirty when he has to and laughs AT the Joker while getting into his head making fun of him. Like Joker's never been in the lobby of a FPS game before. It's great, and after they reach that lesson in the movie, the real world hasn't wanted anything to do with him since, because he's not the "Real Batman". It's such schwarbage.

I mean, I love Batman Beyond and Terry as Batman. I grew up watching it and the DCAU as a whole. But if they made a movie there is a 90% chance they'd fuck it up and it would be trash like most of the recent DC movies aside from the standalone stuff. The best case scenario is they make that Spider-Verse inspired movie that's been going around recently. That might be cool. But I don't trust current WB to handle it. If you want good Beyond content go watch the OG show. It's still good.

10:56 Return of The Joker was peak. And Batman Beyond was going have a seqeul animated movie following up Return of The Joker. The Seqeul is focusing on Catwoman and it was revealed she and Bruce Wayne are Terry’s parent and Terry found out he is clone of Bruce Wayne. And Selina Kyle is the one who created Terry. That element was use Justice League Epilogue episode where Amanda Waller created Terry instead of Selina Kyle. The Sequel got scrapped because Return of the Joker didn’t do well finically and it was too dark. Oh 2000s, you are hypocrisy. So what do you think about Selina Kyle being the mother and creator Terry McGinnis? Imagining an Old Selina Kyle makes me think of the comic *Catwoman Lonely City.* That comic is really good you should check it out.

I’m going to go against the grain here. While Batman Beyond as an isolated concept is ok, I never want this to become the main continuity for Batman/Bruce Wayne because it destroys the Batfamily and unlearns any and all lessons that Bruce has learned throughout his life to become an edgy old man.

Na it definitely should be the main continuity, with a few changes but batman being alone just shows the things he sacrificed to be batman shows he's obsessed with it and it hinders his relationships, being a hero well never bring you joy and I think that's an important lesson

Finally someone that actually goes out and brings to the one giant glaring issue of Batman beyonds original concept. Like beyond requires that just about every bit of growth Bruce ever had since just first Robin had to be ignored or undone. It also feeds of this toxic idea that Bruce is just obsessed with not only puts his position as a hero in question but also strips him off just about any big of nuance especially concerning why he even is Batman in the first place.

Have to agree. That concept of loner Bruce is… outdated. Good for Elsworld (just look at how much the fandom hates Zur-En-Arrh right now. Also, storyline where the family fell apart are never much loved these days - death of the family, Gotham war), but if you are bringing it in main continuity, then I suggest they re-create the origin story. I don’t see any of the ‘siblings’ fans agreeing to it.

@@rynobehnke8289 To be fair Beyond works with the DCAU universe because Bruce and Dick had a falling out. The whole Tim/Joker incident basically retired both Tim and Barbara from being Capes. Along with Bruce never marrying and letting go from the mission. Beyond can only work in a universe where everyone in the Bat family just retired from the cape business.

I don’t like the games we got. But I wasn’t digging the Beyond concept. No Terry. It seemed the main way of traversal wasn’t from flying with the suit or the futuristic Batmobile, but with a standard Bat-Bike. Damian was just gonna be here in a time-skip, which is just sad given the wasted potential of him and the League of Shadows post-Arkham City. And I fucking loathe the suit. It’s armored up and doesn’t even have a full mask…….Im glad it didn’t release

And Gotham City is not the cyberpunk Neo Gotham. Its the old Gotham but more ruined. Its set in the future but its clearly not far into the future like beyond. Its more like midway point between Bruce and Terry.

I could be completely wrong, (and probably am) but it's two things fear and money. Outside of the comic fan and watcher of the DCAU Batman Beyond series McGinnis unfortunately isn't well known. And when you release a product like that you have to consider everyone. I feel like what worked for Into The spider-Verse was the variety of Spider-Men which, gave Miles Morales to shine. Anyways, I could go on and on. But I love Batman Beyond and trust me it frustrates the heck out of me. But hey I got a new Budokai Tenkaichi game. Anything's possible. Hopefully WB will learn from it's suicide squad disaster.
