seems a pretty negative portrayal of parenthood, but i guess that fits into the band's general thematics (not hating or anything i love the song, it just occurred to me that perhaps that line was revealing something of gibbard's internalised attitudes towards family.)
@skrimpdaddy3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t get that from this song or that specific lyric I think he is commenting on cath marrying because she is expected to, which makes her unsure and not confident in her decision or choice of husband. So the nervous smile ensues, and that reference is not anti family as much as it is the nervous helplessness of having a crying child in public that produces a nervous smile to a crowd while TRYING to comfort a baby.

love is just proximity. soul mates don't exist. theyre literally just lies to rationalize the that depressing fact, whether realized consciously or not. but that's okay, being happy doesnt have a solution, there isn't an answer. It's a life long difficult question that you just have to desperately try to power through; decades, seconds, instances, sudden infinitudes of long division and quadratics, 2+2 and imaginary numbers. This takes inspiration from the classic novel Wuthering Heights (1847) by Emily Bronte. "Cath" is Catherine Earnshaw, who marries Edgar, a "well-intentioned" man of prominent social status despite being in love with the lower-class ruffian Heathcliff. The music video, directed by Autumn de Wilde, is set during the wedding ceremony, with Beth Riesgraf playing Cath, the bride, and Lukas Haas playing the unwanted guest, Heathcliff.

@@pisstakecentral just a bad marriage. Let myself feel trapped because of young kids etc. I was kinda the male Cath. At the time I was giving, giving and receiving little in return. Became emotionally bankrupt and was self aware enough to know I would have either died or completely fallen apart, and when I got a little too close to that I finally broke away. And so I made a promise to myself that I'd never let it get to that point again. Had another failed relationship after that, in which I probably swing too far the other way, not giving enough and being guarded. But now, third time's the charm. I'm finally finding the balance. Less stressful career choice, relationship where both give, less guarded, etc. Took me 44 yrs to figure it out, but the key is being self aware and always trying everyday to be a little bit better than yesterday. Also...knowing your emotional limits...giving but not to that point of bankrupting your emotional reserve.

For me, this song is about not only most likely ending up with someone you never truly loved, merely settled with,, but about everything else you settle for in life as well.. career goals are crushed by society who says you can't succeed or that it's impossible, you grieve for the inner child you lost through the process of growing up, you grieve for the past, you grieve for lost loves, lost chances, regrets, you grieve for your dreams. Sometimes I do feel like every year, my heart grows harder and dies a little more. tldr this is a good vent song ahaha,, but also , follow ur heart ! :p

Does anyone else see the parallels between this song and the novel Wuthering Heights? The female lead is called Cath, she marries a man who is well-intentioned although she does not truly love him. It's brilliant. She really only marries Edgar because she thinks her love for Heathcliff won't be accepted by society, therefore, due to the pressures of society, she marries a man she does not love.

After a long and painful breakup, we ended up together, and three kids in, still are. Her name is Cath (though with a 'K'). I remember listening to this during those times when I was far from certain things would work out, and feeling like it was written for me... "Cath, she stands with a well-intentioned man; but she can't relax with his hand on the small of her back..." 13 years in to a relationship, with kids, a mortgage, work... these things put strains on things, but hearing this song again today reminds me of how damned lucky I am that she's in my life.

This song is so written about my big sister kath , who passed away in 2015 of heart problems, and married a guy who was a piece of crap, so this song hits home for me extremely!R.I.P SISSY

Confession time: I always liked Ben's side project, The Postal Service, but haven't listened to them is many, many years now. I've NEVER liked Death Cab, I don't know why, so don't ask. It's probably because I've always been a Hardcore and Metal and Post Hardcore guy, but anyway, tonight on my Pandora radio station for the band now known as Superheaven, previously known as Daylight, Death Cab's song "Cath" came on and i figured I'd just let it play, but as I sat and listened to the lyrics, it jolted me and my heart just broke.....this song describes the last female I had a "relationship" with and it kills me that even though she threw me away and closed the door on me I could never help her. I could never be that special guy for her....because she wouldn't let me. I'm trying to move on now, but a part of me will always wonder what could have been, had she truly let me in. Anyway, thanks for letting me be candid....for whoever might find this.

This sounds word by word like something I wouldve written. Being a hardcore guy I've never liked DCFC although I love bands like future islands. Stat gold dude.

+silenthillvictim that was beautiful man, I wish you find true love. When I heard this song it meant nothing to me until I experienced the pains you did. I watched the best thing in my life leave me for a new path. Much love brother, from another Metal and Post Hardcore guy.

I know exactly what you mean. This song and the OMAM "Love, Love, Love" song break my heart every time I hear them. Except mine was a crush. We were both in on and off relationships with others except every time one party was single the other wasn't. Now it's been years since I've seen or hear anything about him, but I still miss even his presence. I've never had such a gut wrenching ache for someone else after all this time. In saying that, I'm glad I met him because without realizing it at the time he helped me define what I do want in a relationship. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

If you guys love the song so much, read the book. The song is based on Wuthering Heights and describes the relationship between Cath(erine) Earnshaw and a man named Heathcliff, who was below her social status. She decided to marry another man, which provoked Heathcliff to leave his class behind and become a "gentleman". However, in the process he leaves behind his morals and only seeks revenge for what she did.

"Read the book" that's that's all I hear from people who have nothing better to do with their time. "The Book was better" No! The book is not ever better than someone else spending millions of dollars visualization the words written on a page. Sure imagination can be a magical place, but do you really think sitting with a book for what could be days, weeks trying to imagine the visual effects movies provide in 90 minutes?!
@SomeOfTheJuice7 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, I read the book around the same time I first heard this song, and I hated the book, but adore this song. Maybe it's because of the second half of the book, but there was no redemption, no lesson, it was just...everyone sucked at the end. I don't like the Bronte sister's writing as a whole after also reading Jane Eyre, which I found better than Wuthering Heights, but still quite vapid compared to other books of the same time. This song, though, vastly surpasses the book in my opinion.

This is just beautiful. A woman, marries a man when there were so many that could have loved her more. That just... kills me inside. I mean, I'm just young, and my crush totally went for some dude, don't know if he really loves her or just uses her for his own popularity. I don't know why I relate to it, I mean my problems seem so insignificant compared to the one in this video, but I just do. The beauty of this song, undiscribable.

My dad introduced me to death cab. I heard the band name, and I was like ten so I thought anything with death in the name would be like death metal. My bad. I heard them and they were so slow and different and at first I thought I hated them. I came back to them when I was 13, and the first song I fell in love with was a lack of color. Listened to it all night. I decided that nobody could write as poetically as Ben Gibbard

So, after years I finally come back to this band. My siblings always listened to this music when I was a lot younger, so it's sort of become a part of me. I don't remember many songs but the ones I do resonate with me.
