OK, I ordered this, but not for the things discussed in this video. All of that seems mostly senseless to me. I like that I can configure the main display, that there are no wires, a good clear screen, and maybe I'll connect the heart rate monitor once a year as I get older. Otherwise, the old style bike computer works fine and it keeps the emphasis on the ride and not messing with another device. If the 130 were cheaper I'd have happily bought that over the 130 plus, but for some reason the plus was $50 cheaper...

Would you buy the Plus if they did? No. That's what the new iterations of these devices are reducing down to, firmware updates. For example gopro 6, 7 and 8 share the exact same hardware. You could have all the features GP8 has on your GP6 but guess what, you won't unless you dish out 300€ for the GP8. How's that for upselling.

Lol typical Garmin, this is easily firmware territory. No reason not to give this to 130 owners. That said the 130 plus is now punishingly good value compared to the wahoo range. Wahoo have the positive sentiment with their updates, but Garmin is just moving faster but agitating their customers in the process. At some point the market should punish Garmin for making their customers hate them right?
@Dcrainmaker4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't entirely understand why this unit ended up as 'new hardware', whereas others get updates. This example though, I think most folks underestimate just how many features Garmin adds post-announcement day in the following 1-3 years, or even 5-7 years in some cases. Looking at the firmware release notes is always fun. It's astonishing how many features we forget weren't there when the products launch.

@@Dcrainmaker I think you are right for Garmin's high end units where they uplift the top models to remain above newly released lower tier models. Do most people buy Edge 1030s, Fenix 6 and Forerunner 945? Probably not, which is possibly why your impressions and experience could start to diverge from the zeitgeist. There will also be a large number of Garmin users that don't watch awesome channels like: your own DCRainmaker, Shane Miller's and DesFits so they wont even realise Garmin does this. But in the case of the Edge 130, I just checked, and the unit got Physio True Up, and extended display mode. Physio True Up is pretty cool, but its really about making Garmin Connect a better moat to competition and something most would have assumed worked properly via Garmin Connect anyway. The rest of the updates were a steady stream of bug fixes, and some new backlight display options to address the gulf between practical battery life and marketed. With Wahoo the upgrade that I still remember fondly was when they introduced cadence support and multiple bluetooth connections for the Kickr Core. Those updates made the product genuinely more usefull to me, which Is why I remember it so strongly. Garmin would have probably released that as the Kickr Core Plus, and made you buy it again to get those features :-p
@waynedoherty77584 жыл бұрын
@@pe3117 I was happy with all the features of the 130, and only just upgraded to a 530 due to the battery life and wanting better navigation. If the battery life was better I probably wouldn't have upgraded. I really wanted to jump ship to Wahoo because I was so annoyed with the battery life, but ended up staying in the Garmin ecosystem so I could combo with a Garmin watch for weightlifting and have HRV tracking my recovery. PE the screen on your Edge 130 is pretty amazing compared to the other Edge devices, as is the weight! In daylight its super crisp and clear compared to its bigger bros. So if your happy with what it does and do shorter rides without too many sensors, its a great unit!

Ray, would you spring the extra 100 for the Edge 530 over this unit? thanks!
@Dcrainmaker7 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Generally speaking, it shouldn't be hard to find the Edge 530 on some solid sale deals these days, considering it's X-1 (a previous gen unit now). Thus, you an usually find it for sub-$250 pretty easily. That said, I'd really look at the Edge Explore 2 - and see if there's specific things you need (e.g. structured workouts) on the Edge 530, else, the Edge Explore 2 is a far better little unit.

Okay...I’m not the smartest guy when it comes to these things. I have an Edge 810. It has profiles for each of my bikes. I was looking for a similar computer for my wife...she doesn’t really need/want mapping. I thought the Edge130 might be a good fit. I don’t see bike profiles anywhere. If you have multiple bikes...and use this computer in all of them. How does it know if your speed sensors are on a 20” folding bike, 29” MTB, or a 700c-23 road bike??? I see it can remember 20 different sensors...but does it just ask for wheel size when pairing a sensor for the first time and always remember that...does it compare the sensor to gps speed to figure out the wheel size in it’s own??? I’m just confused as to how it works moving from one bike to the next. Thanks.

This is an insulting move from Garmin. They couldn't make the firmware upgrade on a unit that was released only 2 years ago?? If they fixed the battery life problem, I'd consider replacing my 130 but I bet this 130 Plus is even worse.
@jormolАй бұрын
Apparently the Edge 130 plus does not have activity profiles like the higher end Edge devices. Does this just mean that the data field setup cannot be differentiated for MTB vs road biking, or does it mean that when syncing the recorded data to Garmin Connect, the activity cannot be defined correctly (so just biking instead of mountain biking or road cycling)? Any other impacts of this?
@jormolАй бұрын
Oh I think I found the answer in your full written review: - The "Ride Type" defines how the ride will be saved in GC (MTB, Gravel, Road, ...). - The (missing) "Activity Profile" let's you customize the datascreens per profile.
