I need glasses or contact lenses (which I don't get on well with) and therefore need a bike computer with a slightly larger display. As a pilot, the airspeed indicator is hilariously intuitive in a way that I didn't expect (it displays the same way avionics in aircraft do with indicated airspeed and ground speed) but yes I think it should have a wind component arrow for normal consumers
@jess1234-b3t8 күн бұрын
Perhaps the person who designed it was a pilot too. But the difference here is that a bike doesn’t fall out of the sky if you get the airspeed wrong 😅 It would be good if you could create calculated fields - then you can get the machine to do whatever maths you wanted it to do 🤷♀️
@PsyKeks8 күн бұрын
They added the analysis as the background color of the data field. Green for tailwind/slipstream, red for headwind. With only 11 data fields available (same as my original Roam) and no side LEDs anymore, they have to conserve space and consolidate both things into none field, I guess 😂 Well, maybe they will release a selectable data field entry for "absolute wind component in riding direction" in the future. But maybe they think that's too confusing for many users. Tell them, there is 5mph actual wind and they say "it's clearly 20mph winds today!!" when the wind comes from the side and the device doesn't measure from the side, only from the front.

My transition from Wahoo Elemnt Roam 2 to Garmin Edge 1040 has been a disaster...combination of pilot error and frankly the convoluted Garmin ecosystem. I was ecstatic to see Wahoo offer the Ace...not anymore! Thanks for the honest review. You are spot on with your assessment of when Wahoo should have released the Ace. Im sure the decision was heavily weighted towards a holiday release as gift, but it looks like Wahoo pushed the Ace before it was ready. One or two "coming later" features is acceptable, but not as many as you outlined. As far as the size issue is concerned, most users of the Ace (and the Garmin 1050 or 1040) aren't concerned with size/weight...they (including me) want visibility offered by a larger screen. Looks like head units are moving to phone-like screens...at phone-like prices. Conventional wisdom was you didn't want to risk an expensive phone as a head unit...well USD 500.00 to 700.00 is the price of a smart phone... Hope Wahoo figures it out. I am in limbo between my solid Elemnt Roam and the caoable, but frustrating Edge 1040... Thanks as always. 😅 Hope you and familyvare settled in. Have a great holiday season!

Interesting trend I’ve noticed in tech and hobbies: when a company releases something out of the norm for their space, it’s usually for one of three reasons. Either 1) they know a competitor has something better coming at the usual release time and want to get ahead, 2) they’ve got something even bigger planned for that normal release window, or 3) they’re using the early release to fund development and finish the ‘real’ product in time. Makes you wonder what’s really going on behind the scenes!

Got to put hands on one of these early as well - not nearly so in depth of course. Consensus was it was an interesting option, but no one knew why it was dated for early December, rather than early spring or so. A bit sad to hear there are still so many holes in the unit at launch, but from past experience Wahoo has at least done well in pushing updates that add features even to devices that have since been supplanted. I trust Wahoo to make good on adding promised features more than I do most other companies, though I do question the decision to launch so early in an incomplete state. My first bike GPS was the top Magellan model for the US, which was decent if a bit bulbous - had a weird particular issue with it surrounding POIs, but otherwise I don't recall many updates at all. My Lezyne Micro Color... lots of updates, but every single one removed functionality of the unit. It was completely ridiculous. They couldn't get the battery calculation right somehow (mine seemed fine - 10% per hour) so they just removed the #% and left a basic battery icon. Randomly removed a ton a sport modes for some unknown reason, and with it tuning controls. By the time I stopped using that GPS it was a completely different unit it felt like. I'll never trust another Lezyne headunit, even as a diehard user of their tools.

Nope. Been using Garmin Varia tail radar 510 & 515 for about 5 years, and several years ago added MyBikeRadar Traffic special data field, which gives me the actual speed (IN MPH) of approaching passers, updating every second and storing the data in the ride file. This has been far more useful than I expected, and manufacturers and riders who haven't tried it don't understand. Not complicated to do, it simply adds the cyclist's speed to the closing speed (which the Varia provides anyway) and displays the result. Hoped that Wahoo might have baked this into the OS for the ACE, and would have bought one just for this one feature. Will stick with Garmin's clunky arrangement for now.

Yes, Wahoo could have released in the Spring, but 2 comments on that statement: 1) Spring is in December, at least in the Southern Hemisphere, where probably sales will be lower but provide some good real world use and feedback for Wahoo to improve upon, and 2) By launching in Dec, users in N. America (early adopters and reviewers) will provide feedback so they can work on improvements and then re-release in April 2025.

@@Dcrainmaker It seems like a case of sales not listening to the actual engineers. I'm all too familiar with that lmao. All of the delays seem to stem from the migration to this new unified platform... which let's be honest, they've needed badly since acquiring Sufferfest. "You can have it ready by next week? You just have to click a couple buttons." "Literally impossible." "Great, glad to hear it!"

You can reverse the routes in the Garmin connect app. Takes just a few clicks then shoot it over to the edge device. BUT it would be nice to do it on the head unit.

Wasn't really interested in buying the Ace since it's so big but I'm on my 2nd Elemnt Bolt so I was curious how it stacked up. Great thorough and unbiased review. I'll stick to my little Bolt and hope that Wahoo doesn't eff it up with the inevitable version 3.

I wanted this to be a better review for the Ace …. But …. It seems like it needs more time. I made the switch from Garmin to Wahoo and I’m happy I did. From my experience- I believe they will continue to improve it. Clearly from your review they should have waited to release this until spring. I’m still interested- just not now. Thanks for your honest review.

@@bikermousefrommarz6739 yeah recent updates have been great, SDK, improved battery saver options, lots of little UI improvements like text alignment options, arrows at all map zoom levels etc. I think it's a great option

Bold move from Wahoo shipping this early. After watching this video I’m sure people write it off in their minds and won’t come back in 6 months to see if it got better. Rather if I watched this video in the spring and it was a good competitor to the 1040/1050, I’d probably think a lot harder about getting the device when the time came to get a computer.

No matter the state it is also severely overpriced and Wahoo deserve to have this thing fail tbh

why is this review so much better then GCN?

Since it isn't sponsored. To GCN's credit, they're pretty transparent on their reviews when it's a paid promotion (which was the case for the Wahoo Ace) or not.

Without the usual wahoo mips screen, it looks like a 1050 / Karoo 3 with worse software. The air sensor seems fun though

Great review. I've never been a fan of Wahoo head units but at least previous versions were functional. Apparently using customers as alpha-testers for unfinished products has bled into the cycling world. :(

The sensor collection data on a large scale is huge. If Wahoo is capturing it.
@ryoukokonpaku15752 күн бұрын
I think the wind sensor is interesting but definitely agree that they'll need to iron out on making the data easier to digest for users without having to do math. As for the Cda, I'm sure they can actually make a reasonable estimate for it if the headunit has the right sensors connected. This requires speed✅, power (❓), and airspeed ✅. From there you can back calculate Cda by making assumptions on drivetrain efficiency and rolling resistance to get an estimated drag the rider is facing. It won't be wind tunnel level accurate, but it should give you a pretty decent guess assuming they use a reasonable baseline for drivetrain efficiency and rolling resistance.

I have always been a Wahoo user and I really appreciate this review as well. This Ace truly is only half baked from a software perspective. However, compared to my Roam V2, I can see that the UI is quite different and much deeper on this Ace unit. If they can just clean it up and make the changes that Ray is suggesting, I think this could be a pretty nice device. If you don't mind having something the size of a smartphone sitting in front of your handlebars. Personally, I'm just hoping that some of the enhancements (profiles, for example) are ported down to my Roam.
