I think going for the 'easiest' module in DCS is kinda a distraction. Instead, I recommend going for a module that gets you motivated to learn it. For example, the A-10 is definitely one of the more complex modules but if you want to fly DCS to go BRRRRT, then get the A-10. When I first started playing DCS, I wanted to fly the 18 but began by getting the F-5 out of some weird 'I should get trainer/simple jet first'... I bought the F/A-18C two days later and had so much more fun learning that because I wanted to learn that. The F-5 is fun, but it's not the modern jet fighter I wanted to fly.

I say F-5. It doesn't overwhelm you with loads of different weapons, radar modes, gunsight modes and everything. It's such a simple plane designed to do simple tasks. It's easy to control, it doesn't stall hard and flatspin if you do some crap, like the A-10 or L-39. The only downside is that it's slightly more difficult to startup than say F-16 or F-18, because for what the modern aircraft have automatic systems, in the F-5 you have to do manually. But as a starter jet, it's perfect.

I own a lot of modules and I would say the F5 is the most straight forward plane to start with. It is stable, predictible, it forgives a lot of errors in the sky, on the ground, it is easy to take off and land. All of that without electric commands which is pretty good to start leaning I guess! It is multiroles and doesn't have overcomplicated avionics. For me it would be the starter pack winner ;)

I think it really depends on what level you want to learn stuff at. I do whole heartedly agree with Chuck that if you find something you want to learn, then you will put the effort into it. If you want to learn close to real world procedures and airmanship, then learning on the trainers (I especially like the c-101 because of it's depth) and progressing to something like the F-5 before stepping into the what I would call, systems heavy aircraft like the hornet and viper, is probably a good path. I'm biased because I did real world military flying, albeit 50 years ago, and learning to aviate was paramount. Minimum one year before you stepped into a jet...and that was in a rushed program because of a pilot shortage. I agree with you that you can hop into the hornet and fly it around and spend time learning the systems, but to fly it well...that's another issue. Good video and a gutsy stance. Cheers.
@w0mbatina
@w0mbatina 3 жыл бұрын
I always recomend the MIrage to first time pilots. The reasoning being that its simpler than the hornet, and you have a feeling that you know the aircraft much faster. But now that I think about it, learning how to do a2a and use dumb bombs like on the mirage is pretty much just as simple on the hornet. Its just that you never feel like you have actually mastered it. Ive been flying it for about a year now, and im still not even close to knowing how to use all the weapons that are available to me.

As a 65 year old returning to PC game simulation 2 years ago. I started with the free P-51 because I didn't want to spend money to find out I'm to old to do this. I know it's not a Jet. I was able to learn, then learn more then die the die some more. The hardest part was figuring out what H.O.T.A.S. I needed and how to set one up. lol That's hard on a old guy. My point is I bought the P-51D as my 1st Because I learned in the P-51 Free Trainer or what ever it is called. I went to the UH-1H next I have the F-18 But I have not yet wanted to move to it. Huey is just so much fun for me I can't get it out of my system. Very Good Video Thank You.

I really love that simulators of all kinds like racing or flight sims attract such a wide range of ages. Games like call of duty or EA sports games really only attract that 10-25 age range compared to assetto corsa or dcs or arma where I’ve played with 12 year olds and 58 year olds in the same session and there’s a level of respect for each other despite all the generational differences just because they like the same games

Best part about the Hornet is , that its by now content rich enough to spend hundreds of hours on. But withe experiece i had, the A-10 was the easiest to learn after i had flow the three big F's (F-14, F-16, F-18). The weapons and systems are just so similar that its hard not to immediatetly know what you are doing when you have seen them before elsewhere.

2 years later I find this video again, you're the reason I got back into DCS I had bought the F-5 and got bored of it back in 2019. I saw this video decided to buy the F-18 and never looked back I now have the Harrier, KA-50, Mirage and a few others. It really all started with the F/A-18 for me. If you're reading this wondering which module to buy as a beginner GET THE F/A-18. It may SEEM complicated at first but once everything's set up and you know a few basic fundamentals you'll quickly be able to learn more and more. AND after learning the F-18 it was much easier for me to learn to fly the harrier because of the similarities. Don't have the F-16, F-15E or the A-10C but I'm assuming the same could be said for those aircraft as well.

I found the F-14 to be the easiest module to learn for me (having come straight from the MiG-21 to the F-14 it was nice). The startup is simple from the pilots side and for the RIO everything needed is posted on the kneeboard. Best thing to say about the Tomcat: Think of it as a crazy girlfriend. Gotta treat it just right otherwise it'll kill you when you least expect it. (Especially if it's the F-14A. Then it'll stab you in the heart and cackle as the house burns.)

I picked up the F18 last sale for my first taste of a modern jet fighter sim and gotta agree it's been very easy the last two weeks. The system layout is quick to pick up and the flight characteristics are as forgiving as they come. I still haven't dug into the navigation panel yet, but everything else is distracting with how much capability I can goof around with right off the bat. That said I won't begrudge anyone who says it's boring or lifeless because of all the assistance a pilot gets.

Totally agree. Just about 1/2 year ago, I was thinking, which modules to use, to teach someone flying. We came from the F5, because of the analog flying and understanding a jet in the air and the limited systems, to the F18. It was a close call between F16 and F18, but F18 is more forgiving in taxiing and landing and one can do more things with it, like all types a2a and a2g as well as carrier and land ops. So ... besides "motivation" being porbably the best reason to fly a certain plane, if you got them all and you have no particular favorite, I'd totally agree the F18 is one of the easiest jets to fly and learn!

I’m glad you mentioned the Huey at the end. I defo find the helis easier to fly for some reason. Perhaps it’s the slower speeds or the ability to hover but once I understood collective/cyclic, I’ve been having the least stressful flying in the Huey or the KA50.

I disagree with the F-18. It's the one module I have that I started learning, and then put it down. There's something about the HOTAS requirements and avionics in that plane that just made it incompatible with my brain. When I picked up the Viper, I felt truly competent in it after 4 days. For me it was no comparison. But there's a lot of personal preference there, because I never did come to LIKE the Hornet, so that was a big barrier to pushing past frustrations and learning it. Why bludgeon around in this thing when I could fly my Mirage instead? THAT airplane took effort - realistically way more than the Hornet would have. The systems and flying it are stone simple, but being EFFECTIVE in it requires some really superior tactical skill. But I loved that aircraft so much, I just had to figure out how to defeat Eagles with it in BVR. And man, when I got good in it, that was satisfying.

Bang for bucks: yes, F/A-18C. Indeed, it can do everything. But weapon system is quite complex, and not all systems are well integrated. You feel the weight of later upgrade. It’s easy to get lost in all the options. IFF is overly complicated for instance. Easy to learn: M-2000C. Designed as an interceptor, very easy to start up. Weapon system is more limited but very simple to use. The auto pilot is the best you can find in a jet fighter. The plane is very pilot friendly, the fly by wire is great, the plane is fast at all altitudes and can climb high no matter what the load.

I chose the F5 as my first high resolution fixed wing. The main reason is because the systems did not overwhelm me. It seems like a good first high resolution to learn important aspects of DCS. Remember, I just started playing DCS World about a week ago, so you experts don't need to roast my choice. I am loving so far. My first purchases included the Huey and Flaming Cliffs as well.

Great video. I've been going back and forth for a while, trying to settle on a module, and this made a very good case for the Hornet for new DCS pilots. (And I already liked the Hornet anyway.)

I'd say "easiest" maybe not the best or most accurate qualifier but in terms of all the current modules with advanced flight models, the Hornet does provide the most broad capability, especially with the recent updates. You're also spot on in terms of how forgiving it is to fly for newer pilots. The systems and mission complexity is there when you're ready for it but it's not needed out of the box and there are tons of incredibly high quality tutorials and guides for systems, etc available online. As an aside, I had to laugh that MSFS2020 is adding the F14A of any of the Tomcat variants - seems like they're looking for rudder induced compressor stalls and subsequent crashes on final. :)

Its important to point out the F18 gets a lot of love from the developers and has some of the best selection of training missions while other modules like the A-10 seem forgotten by the developers and the quality and selection of training missions is lacking. I tried the F18 on trial because of this video after trying the A-10 and couldn't agree more. Its easy to learn/fly and actually has training missions to teach you some basic aviation skills like pattern work.

Thank you ! Yes the Hornet is a great module, I learned to refuel, to land, the break, the navigation and it has a lot of weapons and so much YT videos to learn.....it's still a long learning curve ^^ Right now I'm on the Huey .... completely different, but so interesting to explore and enjoy low speed flight ... but harder than the Hornet for me ! and I start to think about WWII ^^ (playing DCS since february 2020)

If you say cold start, take off, landing and shutdown, ,the Viggen is easy to learn, very few steps to memorise, takes a very short while to startup, and has reverse thrust for landing!

Going outside the official modules, I'd recommend the T-45 Goshawk. It's what the IRL plane was designed for. Relatively simple start up. Very forgiving in the air until it isn't. Will help teach airmanship, since you have to keep its quirks in mind (ie. no deep banks slower than around 170-180 KIAS.) Still a joy to fly, just very limited weapon options. Makes even a ham-fisted pilot look like they know how to land.

I started with F-5 and in my opinion this is the best module to start flying, sure it has drawbacks but the learning curve is gentle and it is a simple aircraft overall. I think that what really makes Hornet better is its payload capacity. But still the basics that I’ve learnt in the Tiger helped me a lot in other jets (including F-18), also it’s cheaper than the Hornet. That’s why I’d recommend to start with F-5.

I love the F-5. Basic navigation training. Analoge instruments. Bombing requires alot of basic flying skills (attitude, altitude, speed etc) to get a target, but man is it fun when you begin to master it!!!!

The good thing with the F5 as well as since it can carry GBUs, if you have friends in other modules like hornet and you fly together they can also laze for you. This makes it pretty useful as a bomb truck and gives you more things to do.

once you've actualy learnt to fly the thing the tomcat is really got as its systems are relitivly simple it only requires afew keybinds to operate and you have an ai in the back seat who helps you spotting enemies etc

Nope, it's not a widow-maker, but the Tomcat takes actual airmanship to fly. It's the difference between having to fix an upset yourself vs letting the FCS sort it out for you.

You make very valid points in this video, and yes if you were to buy 1 module, the Hornet is a solid recommendation. Is it the easiest module to learn? In my opinion, no - not at all, given the complexity of the avionics and the number of different weapons you can employ. Going for the Hornet as your first DCS module is like going for a 1000cc superbike right after passing your MOD2 as a 24 year old. Most people would recommend going for something less of a handful to learn your craft, which in DCS would be something like an F-5. It will teach you more about flying than jumping straight into a FBW jet. I'd say going from an older analogue jet to a modern one is easier than the other way around, and you're less likely to get overwhelmed which could make someone new toss DCS overboard prematurely. So in short, I'd say I agree with the contents of this video, but not with its title ;-)
@TacticalPascale
@TacticalPascale 3 жыл бұрын
It was a toss up between this and the F-5, the “new player” friendly FBW systems are what secured the win for the Hornet. I used the F-5 in my “In Harms way” series to show how old airframes can be used to great effect.

Great video. Excellent. I e often said that the Hornet is just so “refined” at this point. Everything is buttery smooth. From take off to landing - smooth and well modeled. I personally find the Tomcat significantly easier to land (Case I, II, or III), but that’s only one category out of the many mentioned, and I agree with you on the other criteria. Extremely versatile platform, and this was a great video. Well done, brother. 👍🏾

For me and my friend the easiest module was the Viggen. It mostly came down to us, being Swedish, had a very easy time getting to grips with control layouts, functions and tactics. I still can't lob fox-3s from my hornet but programming a rb-15 to fly around an island to hit a naval group is something I get.

New to DCS and after weeks of watching various videos in the run up to a sale, bought the F18 because on balance it could do everything, plus I liked the Aircraft and just before the sale ended the F16 because that was always the one but still under early development, so it was both a head and heart decision. Being unfamiliar to the majority of the systems soon became daunting prospect in all but free flight and practising landings. Later got the F5 with the plan of learning something more basic in comparison then transferring that over to the others. Still got a long long way to go before become anywhere near competent and still need to get things sorted such as some form of head tracking and rudder pedals. However found that by being able to switch between multiple Aircraft helps because something you can do in one to a fair standard helps in learning the same or similar systems another and more a question of location and how it's operated in that particular aircraft. Also first impressions I loved the F-16 but wasn't too taken with the feel of the F-18 but over time the F-18 gained all that ground back and more and is currently the one i'm putting most effort into. For someone brand new though and unsure I'd recommend the A4 Skyhawk mod as it deserves not to be overlooked and would be a great introduction.

It is true that if somebody has a preference for a certain aircraft, this is the one the respective person should choose. Problem is that not everyone has this favorite plane. For this group I strongly support the recommendation given here and fully agree. Handling of the airplane and managing the systems is very straight forward (compared to its peers). You can start from easy stuff (CCIP bombing, ground strafing with guns and rockets) straight through to smart weapons, dogfighting and bvr engagements. Carrier handling and AAR comes as a bonus. This is most important, if you do not have time to spend with DCS on a daily basis, as is the case for me.

The F/A-18 is a great choice. My first one was the A-10C which I just fell in love with and once you have a passion about it's easy to learn. So, buy whatever you're passionate about, but we wary of the F-16 since I don't think it's finished enough to warrant a purchase. Still bought it though.

Since I've grown up with Ace Combat and other arcade flight games, some simulators as well, I never liked the Hornet. However, after DCS, even though I don't own it (yet) I've learned to respect the Hornet for what it was made for. Versatility. It is an amazing aircraft CAP, SEAD, Strike, CAS (not really but it can do it), Anti-Ship, Carrier ops... The Hornet will have something for anything

I cant say why as I dont own the module, but I was told several times the Mirage was a great starting point as it's simple, but still fly by wire. For myself, I have both the Hornet and Viper, and keep going back and forth on which one I want to go in on. I prefer the Viper from a personal level, but the Hornet is a more developed aircraft. I have all the stuff, I just need to sit down, choose a plane, and get started.

the Mirage 2000C was my first high fidelity Module and it's a great plane, agile and swift. My only complain is its lack of firepower, 4 A/A Missiles isn't enough, on top of that the range for the S530D and the Magic's are so low you pretty much have to be right next to the enemy plane. The INS Alignment its soo boring and long! without it The Mirage could be in the air in less than 5 minutes (Taxiing included) but because of it the Take-Off times are around 10 minutes

Well, the FA-18 is the best aircraft cause it can do everything you need, but I think the Viggen is the easiest to learn and also to remember if you don't use it in a long time. Just start it with a couple of clicks then load the cartridge and type 9099 and off you go.

I can agree that the FA/18 is easy once you get comfy around using it in all aspects of flight. I really like it specially with the trim set in the sweet spot, it is just so stable and you can cruise around like a boss enjoying the low level view before landing. Just need to give it room for enough turn to not stall it turning to hard. Its also great for the combined capability of air to ground / air to air. However the A-10 is fairly more easy in terms of air to ground once you get your head around it, since its systems are way more optimal for it. It was nice and funny to year you mentioned the huey, because I had that thought too and because is the easiest module indeed outside the fixed wing spectra. And i think its a good mod to start with for every newcomer to DCS since it gives you an idea of what its like with startups switches wise but is still pretty easy to get your head around and gives a good understanding of the principle. I have a load of startup imgur guides for fa/18, a-10d, Viggen, huey, ka-50, mi-8, Gazelle and Apache which are really easy to follow for startup stuff if you wanna use en for helping peeps out on training sessions. Nice video 👌

Planes I would say F5, Mig 21, Mirage and F16, the most entertaining module I found is the av8 that with the v/stol makes things more entertaining to land on Tarawa LHD also his almost multirole capacity can give many hours of enjoyment learning all the systems that I found to be not that complex
