MYSTERY SOLVED! - Why Did This NEGLECTED Caprice Run So Bad?

Parts are here!
This cream puff Caprice had been running rough for years. Honestly, it's probably the only reason I had the opportunity to purchase it. We went through the usual suspects like IAC, TPS, Timing, vacuum leaks ect. After further diag, we determined the inside of the distributor was falling apart.
Weird right? So I ordered a few new parts online and played the waiting game.
With the car running top notch, we could go for a cruise, hose all the mud out and re charge the a/c! This car is almost ready to hit the streets.

I was working as a tech at a Chevy dealer when these were new as well. They were a bit confusing to us at the time however I can say that the reluctor falling apart is a new one, never seen nor heard of that one before!!! As for keeping the "old guys busy", well my grandkids seem to have already learned that, dang it.

Like Mur, I'm an old guy. And problems like these bother me, too. The reluctor wheel on the distributor was obviously bad and that pretty much fixed the problem. But the early brake clean results pointed to a vacuum leak. All your work on new gaskets, lines, etc. must have taken care of that but left the distributor issue. So, were there actually two problems at the beginning? If that's the case, then it's no wonder you were pulling your hair out. Props to you two for finally getting to the bottom of it. It's also no wonder the local shops in the car's original location were baffled.

Had an 88 chevy pickup had the same problem, there is actually a service guide that was written by GM on this because its a common problem, the distributors in this era for some reason build corrosion on the pickups inside. The worst part is its inside so since its not easily visible you throw a bunch of parts at it before you figure it out, ask me how I know, lol

Until she totaled it during a KY ice storm. Bent up a bit, gave it to my dad. He had it another 50,00 miles. Back when Chevy knew how to build em. Great cars! Gaining much popularity today, getting expensive in my area for a nice one. KUDOS to you guys! You have a sweet ride! 👍

My uncle, one of my dad's brothers bought one of those brand new in 1989. It was burgundy with burgundy interior. He loved that car so much. It was a gorgeous car. His was a 4.3l with the then new DIS. I remember my dad tried to tell me it didn't have spark plugs. I told him it has spark plugs, but it doesn't have a distributor. Sadly my uncle died not a terribly long time after buying the car. The good old days. Great looking car you guys have!

That is great you got the car to run well again. That possible issue slipped my mind until I saw you fix it and remembered that I encountered something like this with my 1995 Caddy Deville with the 4.9l V8. It would run like crap and turn the check wallet light on. It turned out the be the ignition hall effect sensor in the distributor was cracked and the wiring was a bit brittle. I had to replace the $100 sensor and $50 little wiring harness (which surprise the local caddy dealer had the last one available in stock). Then I had to fight it to remove and replace it. The car worked like a dream after that.
