The Frozen Zoo in San Diego is at the forefront of the emerging field of de-extinction - resurrecting DNA to restore animal species that are in danger of disappearing forever, through such methods as genetic editing and cloning. Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti talks with scientists at the Frozen Zoo (whose bank of frozen cells could help save an estimated one million species) about their efforts to bring back the black-footed ferret. He also talks with the founder of Colossal Biosciences, a Texas company working to bring back long-extinct species like the woolly mammoth and dodo bird.

Absolutely fascinating. I really don't like the idea of bringing back a species that went extinct naturally, but a species that was wiped out because of overhunting or because they were deemed an inconvenience is fine by me, as long as there's still suitable habitat available for them to thrive. @@crrtpf For what purpose? I believe in righting a wrong, but bringing back an animal species whose time naturally ran its course isn't doing that. It'd probably be nothing more than a cash grab at that point. Bring something back just stick it in a zoo and charge admission? I'm really not interested in that.

It seems like the problem is that we only start saving DNA once a species is close to extinction. If it's dangerous for close human relatives to replicate, then surely only having a handful of individuals procreating can't be good for the life of the revived species

Correct, generally you need about 500 individuals to create a healthy population. But I think the idea generally is to have a few purebreds born, and breed them both with each other and similar species, and likely there will be dna manipulation as well. So, they should turn out alright at this point

Scientifically, big dinosaurs indeed can eat humans. What exactly do you plan to feed your pet T-Rex? Just because science can, doesn't necessarily mean they should. Edit: Even if they only start off sticking to smaller, more modern rarer animals, eventually they'll end up doing 'secret' experiments somewhere in the world, because humans don't know when to quit before it's too late. They're already talking about trying to bring back the wooly mammoth...

@@southernflatland At least, science would give me reasons supported by logic and research instead of just moral platitudes. I want to see herds of woolly mammoths as well as a return of species that modern colonialism killed off like the Tasmanian tiger and the dodo. But no, this somehow means I’m gonna be killed by a dinosaur before I am killed by the depletion of 90% of the world’s drinking water circa 2040 and the wars that come from that. Please God, let me die the cool death of being bitten in half by a spinosaurus before I just plain starve to death during the coming wars, floods and droughts

@@chewy99. It is a lot more complex that, for species that became extinct due to overhunting such as the Thylacine, the great auk, the passenger pigeon or the Falklands fox their habitat is still right there (even if not as extensive as it once was) and would, most likely benefit, from its presence,. For other extinct (e. g. moas, dodos, pig-footed bandicoots) or critically endangered species (e. g. sumatran rhinoceros, vaquita, amur leopard), which are in their status mostly due to habitat destruction or the introduction of invasive species, it would indeed be necessary to restore their habitats before there's any hope of reintroducing them to their former range.

Some people don't like this because they think it resolves humanity's responsibility when we go stomping all over nature. I disagree because it's like saying that cleaning up spilled milk is gonna lead to more milk drinking. That's silly. But we're talking about humanity, so maybe not as silly as it sounds because I think spilled milk would just make us buy more milk even if we don't plan to drink the extra.

They can't clone birds the way they can mammals because the zygote is inside the egg shell inside the mother bird at the time that the cloning of mammal zygote would take place. They can only modify the sperm or egg cells inside the chick when it is much older inside the shell. Then the modified chick has to survive hatching, grow to reproductive age and then mate naturally with a bird of the opposite sex. Only THEN can they see if the resulting chick has all the genes and traits that they are going for.

I agree. How can each of us fight extinction of wild animal species? For one thing, switch to a fully plant based diet. Animal agriculture, especially raising cows, is a major cause of deforestation, which means habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. Other benefits? 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get the most common chronic, deadly diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year! 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified. 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) 13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance 14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life 15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third! 16-A fully plant based diet improves the immune system according to a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health 17-A fully plant based food system would greatly reduce food borne illnesses like salmonella 18-A fully plant based food system would be able to feed millions more people. Our population is growing! 19-A fully plant based food system would save 13,000 lives a year from the air pollution caused by animal agriculture, according to a study 20- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About." "While the wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest may constitute an “international crisis,” they are hardly an accident. The vast majority of the fires have been set by loggers and ranchers to clear land for cattle. The practice is on the rise, encouraged by Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s populist pro-business president, who is backed by the country’s so-called “beef caucus.” While this may be business as usual for Brazil’s beef farmers, the rest of the world is looking on in horror. So, for those wondering how they could help save the rainforest, known as “the planet’s lungs” for producing about 20% of the world’s oxygen, the answer may be simple. Eat less meat."- CNN Another reason they burn the Amazon is to grow soy. "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production. Most of the rest is used for biofuels, industry or vegetable oils. Just 7% of soy is used directly for human food products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame beans, and tempeh." -Our World in Data

@@exempligratia101 I personally don't have kids and never will, but convincing people to not have children is a lot less likely to succeed than to convince them to switch their diet to one that is also much better for their health, longevity, and the benefit to mankind and future generations for not only climate change but the many other reasons on my list. Another problem with trying to solve the climate emergency that way is that even if we convinced people to stop reproducing today, the effect would not be felt soon enough to avoid the tipping points that the Paris Agreement goals are meant to prevent. We cannot avoid a 1.5 degree increase of global warming without revolutionizing the food production system! Evidence from credible sources on request.

I want my Mammoths, they belong with the living still. I also want the American Cheetah back, the Eurasian Cave Lion, Giant Ground sloths, Dire bears and Wolves, Megalocerus, and the megafauna of Australia. There's several species that shouldn't have disappeared because of us, large ones too. One of the last bastions of megafauna Is Africa, and no where else. Bears, musk ox or just oxen, and mooses are the largest land animals you can find most anywhere. But not the larger ones. In my book there's always space for species on earth, and especially the ones that were taken before their time. We are truly the worst invasive species this planet had ever seen. But it's not too late to make things right, set things up for the future to be better. I've waited my whole life with hope knowing I'll get to see a mammoth, and hopefully in the wild within my lifetime. I want to right a wrong all of our ancestors did for thousands of years. They didn't know any better, until after the fact. It's our job to fix what we broke.

I agree. Massive pollution and animal agriculture, which not only contributes to the pollution, but directly impacts habitat loss. The fishing industry is a direct attack on biodiversity loss! What can each of us do about it? For one thing, switch to a fully plant based diet. Why? Going vegan is the single most effective way for each of us to minimize our environmental footprint. "According to the most comprehensive analysis of farming’s impact on the planet, plant-based food is most effective at combatting climate change. Oxford University researcher Joseph Poore, who led the study, said adopting a vegan diet is “the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth.” “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use. It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he explained, which would only reduce greenhouse gas“Avoiding consumption of animal products delivers far better environmental benefits than trying to purchase sustainable meat and dairy,” he added.”. -Joseph Poore, Environmental Science Researcher, University of Oxford. Bringing back the wolly mammoth, the dodo bird and the Tasmanian Tiger is awesome. Not all will be easy though some have been extinct for 10,000 years like the cave lion would be hard or the surgot parent is too small like the Giant Ground sloth and the Stellar's Seacow for example, it might take some creative way to clone the creature like an artificial wob.

Why not spend that money on protecting endangered species? Thousands of species are lost each year. If human made problems that led to species extinction are not addressed, this work is pointless.

How about both? There are lots of smart people with different interests and talents who can all work together on the future. There are those who work to prevent extinction and those who work to reverse extinction. It‘s good to have both because, as you said, extinction is happening more and more. And scientists who can work on de-extinction wouldn‘t have much to do with direct conservation of living species. It would be a waste not to use them. The best-known extinct species were personally wiped out by humans through intensive hunting, including the thylacine, the mammoth (at least partly our fault), the passenger pigeon and the dodo. Not hunting them anymore, as with the former bounty on the thylacine, is often enough. If that‘s not enough, we‘ll certainly be thinking about it. The return of the mammoth also gives us a chance to save the permafrost, with its billions of tonnes of CO², from thawing.

Unless any currently extinct species brought back into existence are thoroughly protected, my greatest fear is that they'd become extinct again, i.e., captured, mistreated, & displayed for monetary gain, hunted to death and/or otherwise wiped-out----because humans are so vain, childish, selfishly stupid, heartless, & short-sighted about such matters, especially where financial profit is involved.

Fascinating but yeah , it's probably going to evolve into a slow process , potentially lasting several lifetimes. The most apparent reason is the lack of immediate financial incentives. My guess is animal de-extinction will only happen extensively after humans - for medical purposes and more. Because sadly , that's where the money is and where most funding would go. Wouldn't be surprised if human cloning is already done more extensively and more succesfully behind the scenes. I love how they can preserve DNA for future generations , what an amazing hope this builds for the future.

If you clone an animal, since it is an exact genetic copy of the donor cell, you actually re-create a copy of the same individual. In a sense, that individual is resurrected.

Modern problems include keystone species dying out because of the effects of human civilization. Keystone species hold an ecosystem together and when they're lost, it affects us all -- landscape issues, pest populations, etc. I agree about the prehistoric animals, but the point was made that this type of research attracts the donations, and then what is learned can be shared with scientists helping current species.

I don't think species that are extinct should be brought back. Since they're gone, the ecosystems they were in have adapted to ongoing changes. Bringing them back might throw everything off. Also, we are still currently in the 6th mass extinction and nothing is changing. I fear climate change is going to wreak havoc on many more species and we are not going to be able to reverse the damage that we've done. :(
