This is the story of this video… ---------------- There's no Al in this video... it's all AOl, it's a new algorithm only we have access to. ---------------- Just kidding. There's not a single generative Al element in this video. Only lots and lots of compositing. I'll share the story of it here for those who care to read it and cause it's super important to me. Almost 2 years ago we started a project to celebrate the rollout of the de la soul catalog with a series of six music videos that would be made to look as if they came out in each respective era of de las first six albums. The idea was to create a full illusion that these videos were unreleased from the archive and being released for the first time. Unfortunately, of course Dave passed away, and everything changed. The last time I saw Dave was at his place to do the motion capture for this video. I took the train out and back, but my train coming out was delayed and so l only had an hour or so to film him. After we were done he asked if I wanted a drink or anything, he clearly wanted to chat. But I always felt like I was intruding there and if I missed my train back the next one wasn't for four hours and I didn't want him to be stuck with me at his crib for hours on end, so l rushed out to make the train, and obviously have regretted that ever since. After he passed the idea of creating photo real versions of the past became horrible to me, I wish I had been more present of the present. So this video became a dialog for me on Al vs The Soul and what those two concepts mean. Instead of Al imitating human art this is a human imitating ai art. The last shot of Dave in the video is the real Dave from that last motion capture session, ultimately all I wanted was to be around real people and not Al facsimiles. The irony of this video is not only is there no true Al involved it was actually done practically frame by frame in the de-aging and compositing, to the animating of the back, done brilliantly by @williamson_pip on Instagram which was done completely analog in the traditional methods from the 80s. People will continue to believe Al made this... but in truth only AOl could. 😉 - Source: andersfromnyc
