On a beautiful late summer day in 1935, an elegant eight cylinder Packard purrs gently along the curving road around Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. There are three people in the car: the driver, his female passenger and a suited man in the rear - suddenly the driver is distracted and the car is involved in a terrible crash.
After clambering out of the wreckage and rushing to his wife, who lies motionless on the side of the lake, he tries in vain to resuscitate her.
This tragic accident sent a whole nation in the morning for its beloved Queen. Decades later the car still remains at the bottom of the lake where it was deliberately put there by the Swiss government, shortly after the tragedy.
Its location remains a secret…and the Swiss government wants to keep it that way.
Shortly after making this video I went to visit the chapel/memorial of Queen Astrid which is situated at the original crash site - also on this journey I went to visit Mark Twain’s most favourite place upon the Earth.

Thanks for the link back Oddie, it truly is a beautiful spot…and has ads. Maybe KZbin is learning. Loved that ashtray by the way, I used to have a brass smoking table with a plane of that era coming in for a landing, it’s windows lit up and the pedestal table held an ashtray, cigarette box, and lighter…all brass, and I loved it.🖤🇨🇦

Well I guess even KZbin would have to come up with a plausible answer if they had demonetised this one. Oh my goodness that ashtray sounds absolutely fantastic! Whatever happened to it?

@@ObsoleteOddity I loved that ashtray table. It was given to me by an elderly couple for whom I did housework when I was 12. I had it in my bedroom as a bedside table, but when we moved to a new house that was built for us…my Mother saw to it that it never made the move. She hated it, and I shudder to think of its value today. The table top was 2 feet across, it was round, and nearly 3 feet tall, all in Art Deco style with a bronze patina. I have never seen another like it.🖤🇨🇦

I must say that sounds like a treasure, I’ve never even heard of something like that, especially with the interior of the plane lighting up - I shall have to do a search on Google and see if I can find it, unless it was a one off. So sorry that you lost it, but thanks for sharing your memory of it after all these years.

I remember meeting a former Belgium soldier who was part of Leon DeGrelle's Rexist movement. He fought for years on the Eastern Front & when he returned the Belgian government sent him to prison & took away his children & scattered them in foster homes all over Belgium. He finally found them after years of searching for them. He then emigrated to the US. He told me while the Belgian government was sitting on their fat asses in London, he & his men, most of whom were killed, were fighting & dying against communism. He told me the tribunal that indicted him & sent him & his fellow soldiers to prison were made up of former resistance fighters, most of whom were communists. He is buried next to his wife & four of his children in a grave in NYC. Whatever he was, he was no coward, he was wounded 5 times & each time he returned to the Eastern Front. Until I met him, I had never heard that Belgian soldiers fought in the east. It compelled me to buy a book about them. Even the Germans considered them crazy, they were so brave. For anyone interested in their story, the book is called, "Campaign in Russia-The Waffen SS on the Eastern Front, by Leon Degrelle. I believe it's available online for free.

This is the first time I've heard this tragic yet fascinating story. And as usual you did a wonderful job presenting it. I imagine the sacked king had the Packard sunk to keep it away from souvenir hunters and the less scrupulous ready to put it on display and sell tickets. Of course, I find myself wondering what would have happened if the accident never occurred. Would Astrid have persuaded the king to head for England rather than surrender to the Nazis? We'll never know.

How interesting! I have been to Lucerne but I knew nothing about this history. In 2013 in Oklahoma the skeletal remains of three teenagers that went missing were found in their 1969 Camero which went off the road and plunged into Foss Lake in 1970. They were found by accident when local police were testing new sonar equipment. They also found the remains of three people in a 1952 Chevy. They went missing in 1969. Apparently their car too swerved off the road and plunged into the lake.

What a stunning car Oddy. Ive grown up with classic and vintage cars all my life as my father restored them for a living, and restored some of the rarest vehicles ever made. And this was in the days before internet and extensive resources. Im broken hearted to see old beautiful vehicles wrecked, but seeing one asleep in the cold depts of this lake seems soothing somehow. The Belgium Royal family has had its fair share of tragedy in the 20th C ehh!

A sad and fascinating story, our Oddie. Being a curmudgeonly old American, I have no use for "royals", but now and then a story concerning them pops up (however rarely) that is of interest. And this one, which I'd never heard of before, is intriguing. It's a sadness that the queen died in that accident...they must have truly loved each other. That's so rare with these people. And the predatory response of the press is not surprising in its vulgarity..the press are capable of horrible things. And that young king..well, there was an english royal who had an interesting understanding with Hitler...who was removed to the Caribbean, as you know. There's more behind that, too, if you read the story of a man known as Intrepid. As for that Belgian king who collaborated with the Nazis...was it survival, or was he a true believer? I doubt we'll ever know. I hope that car is still undisturbed in that lake. But there are always humans who are born scavengers. Your ash tray is a loveliness! Hang on to it for its beauty, quality, condition, and rarity...at least for a while! Another fascinating story, beautifully presented. Hope you still have your gorgeous Vigee-Lebrun painting, dear Oddie Beau. Never let that one go! Love to you, my friend! ❤

Thank you for your insights my friend, Well as far as the car is concerned, I would still like to see the condition of it - rather much like I enjoyed seeing the Titanic being discovered eventually. Although I do hope it (the car) remains undisturbed, I think it would be in reasonably good condition as it’s freshwater. The ashtray and the picture still remain with me, I’m just a caretaker, they will pass to somebody else eventually. All the best and take care.

Good day, dearest Oddie. This one moved me. Such similarities to Princess Diana, for whom I always had a fondness. This Queen was young, beautiful and it seems kind. I have no doubt the King loved her truly. I think losing her broke him, leaving him lonely and more susceptible to just giving in to the Nazi regime and alleviating it with a woman amongst their ranks. It’s despicable, but very sad. I definitely feel horrible for the children, unable to properly mourn or remember their mother, in their father’s presence. I suppose it was too painful for him to handle, but, it harms them, stifling their grief & love for her. The church ⛪️ is a lovely memorial, but the methods used to obtain the land for it are predatory and elitist. I don’t think the Queen would’ve approved. I’m honestly torn about the car. On one hand, I can see how the symbolism of sinking it to the deepest part of the lake was a kind of “putting to bed” his one true love so that he could continue to move forward and function, being left behind. There’s a dark romance to it all, somehow. BUT, at the same time by it remaining untouched, alone, underwater, not revealing its location, it feels like a sad forgetting instead of celebrating the short wonderful life of someone so beloved. Of course, as a morbid looky Lou, as myself, I’d want to see it, in its watery grave or above and restored/preserved. But, my curiosity also holds respect and genuine emotion for the lives changed by its broken visage. I think others could feel the same. But, those two outlooks are why I’m torn about whether I’d prefer the car to stay or raise it or at least find it. I have the same wondering as other commenters, “Would the Belgian King have given in so easily to Nazi forces had his Love been by his side, or would he have exiled and fought harder, having more incentive to live & fight, for her & their life together?” Love your takes, Oddie. The sentiment is enough reason to hold on to that interesting ashtray, but the design is fascinating and pleasing. So happy for its great condition in your care. Hoping this video doesn’t get demonetized or removed, given the state of things on this medium. See you in the next one. 🥃

I was just thinking the same, how weirdly similar Lady Di and Queen Astrid were, how their stories and even their ends were so much alike, freaky. Im guessing Camilla has taken a note from Lillians book, I understand shes not as hated anymore in the UK as she was at first. To me, she can never say or do anything to come even close to being as universally beloved and respected as Diana, but thats just my opinion as non-English person. And Im glad her children have been able to talk about her, that mustve been so hard on Astrids babies, I cant even imagine.. Id love a peek of that car too! Totally starting to call myself as morbid looky Lou, I have no idea why it amuses me so much :)

I can’t believe I’ve only just found your amazing channel! Really love your content it’s fascinating and your chat and thoughts at the end are really appreciated. Such a tragic story poor Queen Astrid. It looks an amazing spot where the chapel is just going to look at your visit there . Binge watching on a rainy bank holiday here in the Uk 🇬🇧 thank you Oddy 🕊🇬🇧 we really need channels like yours . KZbin is so frustrating who it penalises.

I got to take a ride in the last working DC2 in Long Beach some 27 years ago. It was beautifully restored. The 2 65+ year old pilots (2 was required due to their ages) took us to Catalina Island and back.

Lovely narration, as always. Ghastly story! I’d heard OF Leopold III, Astrid & Boduin-but never any details of this tragedy. Somehow, in my mind, Queen Astrid had “died young,” forcing the King of Belgium to remarry for the sake of “raising the children.” So, I guess I’d thought of his 2nd wife as a governess-not someone Leopold had already/immediately impregnated. Yet the marriage between him and Queen Astrid was publicized as a “love match” rather than arranged. Was it? How could it have been, if all the king wanted to do was have her forgotten by their children? Thanks, Oddie! No one tells a story anymore so touchingly as you! Outstanding animé work on the still photos, too. ♥️💐

😂🤣😂🤣🤗😂🤭😂😂🤣 Isn’t that just about always who people “fall in love with” & “marry” anyway? “I INSIST on doing the driving! TODAY!! Driver? Get in the back where you belong.” Natch. 🤭🤭😂🤭😂🤭 😂🤣🥰
