Pretty Dulcie Markham didn’t choose to be Australia’s most notorious gangster moll, that life chose her, or so she would claim.
Many men in relationships with her ended up in an early grave in gangland killings, so much so that the press dubbed her the 'Angel of Death' - But pretty Dulcie said she was just an ordinary gal. In her own words: “Believe me, I’m just an ordinary girl; these things have been thrust upon me”.
I look back on the highs and lows of Dulcie’s life - and that of the other female underworld personalities her shared her world in the 1920s razor gang era.

Well the next couple of videos that I will be posting on KZbin, have already been demonetised by KZbin. I've been on KZbin since 2008 (and made this channel in 2010) ...longer guaranteed than the people from Google who are pressing the buttons at the moment - YT pretending that advertisers don't want to place their brands on mature content....absolute rubbish) It's not up to me or KZbin for that matter to monitor what other people's children watch on the internet; that is the responsibility of the parents themselves. There is a separate KZbin for kids.

Hello Oddie and thank you for this interesting story that I hadn't heard of before. Listening to it I was reminded of 2 dear elderly spinster sisters which I helped out and who were actually born at Crown St Women's Hospital and who spent their early years in Ultimo in inner city Sydney, for those who are not Australians. They shared with me stories of living there in the 1930's and 40's and of watching the prostitutes sit on the stoop of their brothel while peeking from the windows of their semi detached house the road from the house of disrepute watching the ladies of the night sit there picking the nits out of each other's hair. Of course their mother forbade them to have anything to do with these women, but while their mother was busy with household chores, they would watch them from their second story room. It was a life, for them at least, of harsh unending poverty and enormous fear of their elderly father, who was known to levitate and scream at the demons riding on his shoulders! I doubt that anyone on that street lived a happy existence and these dear sisters lived a life of misery and ill health, trusting very few humans but were great cat lovers as I am today, trying to keep alive their memory with snippets of their life story on channels such as this! The irony, when reflecting upon the abject poverty of inner city Sydney of the early and mid years of the 20th century and today is that those areas such as Ultimo are now full of million dollar properties and higher in some cases, and all that is left of the brothels and rodent infested tenements are stories like Dulcie's and Wyn and Ethyl! So we must keep them alive for generations to come. Thanks for reading!

@@ObsoleteOddityit’s surprising how many times you read the phrase: ‘tax collectors and other sinners’ in the the Bible. Of course at the time, tax collectors were taking money from their own people to pay the Roman government to help pay for their occupation of Palestine. Naturally they would skim some off the top so they were considered the lowest of the low.

Thank you, Oddie, you are a wonderful story teller! Wow, she loved Mafia Men! I used to think loving a mafia guy would keep me safe! Of course, I was wrong! Too me, with all her dead lovers..she was a black Widow! It's hard to believe anyone would want to live in such constant danger. Kings Cross, sounds a lot like "Times Square" in NYC when I lived there in the early 70's. It was filled with bright lights of Porno Theaters, Drug Dealers, Hookers & hustlers. That being said, it reminds me of one of my old favorite films, "Midnight Cowboy" Dustin Hoffman & John Voight). Partially filmed in the Times Square area. It's almost July 4th in 2 days, celebrating America's Independence Day. Good time for some BBQ's! Of course, my cats freak out when they hear fireworks going off! Sending you and yours blessings & lots of love:)) You are a true Master of your Art of Story telling with extremely nice videos:)) I look forward to everything you post! Have a wonderful day💞

Dulcie was very beautiful and I can see why she was compared to Ginger Rogers. She was a survivor for sure and I can’t help but feel sad for her. Her last husband’s beautiful words after her death brought tears to my eyes. I love the old newspaper clippings and photos. I to have stared at old pictures and wished I could jump into the photograph and take in the sights and sounds of another time. I have always had a soft spot for women like her. When you are young and beautiful, and not to live the life cut out for you…what can a girl do but take what she could get using the tools at hand? She was 15, and you know the men promising the world were a good deal older than that. The rise up to the glittering world of a recognizable “dangerous lady” was heady, and filled with champagne and compliments, and jewellery. The tenure generally not that long, and the end…beauty gone, and no longer in demand, seen by the rest of society as a “fallen woman”. She was lucky to have a good Husband who loved her in her declining years when age and injury betrayed her. She was a later example of girls like Miss Nesbit, except her rich men came about their wealth in less seemly ways. They ALL wanted fresh young women of beauty much too young for them. Given better choices and options, she could have had a great life…but that wasn’t the part of town where she was born and raised. Thanks Oddie, there have always been, and will always be women who seek and find lives of danger, glamour, and infamy. And they often find it. You did her justice here. Much love and light. 🖤🇨🇦
@ObsoleteOddity
@ObsoleteOddity Жыл бұрын
Yes she got caught up in it very young, was influenced and led - and before she knew it, was deeply involved. I guess it was the feeling of excitement at the start, also a lot more money than she’d ever seen before. After a certain period she could only see this as a way of making money - until in the end it just became too dangerous, and she finally settled down. You’re right, she was lucky to find someone who would love her, a lot of these women didn’t have such a happy ending.

I’m glad you think so my dear friend, it is my wish to tell their story - and it deserves to be told, for they led very interesting lives, at least we think so! Although I have had some admonishments from very few, who don’t think prostitutes deserve their story to be told. I would heartily disagree. One lady on my Patreon and I actually had to block, she got so furious. I’m really sorry that Richard and yourself have not had the easiest year, but take heart - all things come to pass, even the bad times. Do you have a trip planned for this summer? I'd be really interested in knowing how Dulcie got into a life of crime at such a young age. Women who live lives of crime, especially if they reform later on, are always fascinating to me, partly because their lives are usually so different from mine. I watch music reactions too, usually young people hearing songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's for the first time, experiencing what we grew up with and it's a delight to see them "exposed" to and respond to the music that was our jam 😆 Unfortunately YT tends to block them so a lot of these youtubers distort the video somehow, put some writing across it or fade it so much that you can hardly see just to try and avoid YT deleting it. Some only play audio which isn't the same as watching the original music video of the time. Try not to be disheartened, seems that YT just want to make trouble for people. Keep up the good work you have a great channel.

The problem with content creators like myself, is that they want us to use words like “unalived”instead of murdered, and other such nonsense - and if you don’t obey their less than subtle programming, they punish you by taking away your money. I’m never going to be programmed by these drones, and everyone needs to stand up to this nonsense.

@@ObsoleteOddity I always will my dear Oddie Beau, I remember what good fun we had back in those dats…and the lovely community, which still acts much as it did when in Patreon sticking it to the man. One day they will find out how stupid blurring out veterinary, medical, and other medical information from people trying to aid their schooling makes them grateful…and don’t get me started on unaliving, or the glimpse of a salacious nipple not adequately erased from our oversexed libidos. Sigh.🖤🇨🇦

We know yt doesn't really understand how to maximize engagement, and ignores that the population is growing older and they are present on the site. This reminds me of the time they were encouraging creators to make content no longer than 10 MINUTES because they thought people didn't like long form videos😂 (do you remember that Oddie? About 10 or so years ago?) Also - how can a channel like That Chapter be such a pet, but ObsoleteOddity be shunted? You are both under the true story umbrella - which is a popular genre on the site. Honestly, I prefer your reportage - but the point is, it's in the same vein and we need different flavours. As you indicate, ageism seems at work. YT seems to think that content for different ages and tastes can't co-exist on their site. But what about network television at its height? They knew their demographics and presented material for different ages, skewing for key target audiences. YT has an advantage - they're not limited by time slots, let alone production costs. It's a pity. I deeply appreciate the material you share, Oddie! While you might loosely be categorized in the true crime category - you are much more than that, with your informed looks at the past and stylish delivery. I learn a lot of new things from you. I am sorry they do not realize the dimension you - and other truly unique creators - add to the site.
@ObsoleteOddity

That’s exactly it! KZbin doesn’t realise that most of the younger generation have already made the exodus to TikTok - they are desperately promoting their own version of it, KZbin shorts - probably now realising the ship is already sailed. But us old timers are still here. Although I wouldn’t say I’m in the crime category, I do cover crime, but also many other subjects - engineer of eccentricity! Very glad you enjoy my content, thank you for your lovely feedback.

@@ObsoleteOddity Yes - I apologize if it seems I was trying to limit you to the crime category. Clearly you are engineering far more than that! I was trying to compare you to a heavily touted channel, That Chapter, regarding monetization - he certainly recounts some gruesome things and is not demonetized. What does yt cite as the reason for demonetizing you? One fact is - when you present true crime - the stories are very unique. There are a lot of channels covering current events. You would think yt would appreciate the variety you provide!

Not sure if you’ve heard about or done videos about these places or not yet, but I would highly recommend looking into them. They’re all in the stockyards in Fort Worth, Tx. One of which I work for, that being the Isis theater on Main st. I would also look into Riscky’s steakhouse on Exchange Ave, there’s actually a video about it on KZbin where people went in and picked up multiple voices on their machine. Lastly, also on Exchange Ave is Miss Molly’s, it’s technically the most haunted hotel in all of America. Take a look into them and hope you enjoy their very haunted history!
