Dead to Rights 2 has less gameplay variation than the first game and somehow makes everything worse while trying to improve.

Having Jack crash a car at the start of _every mission_ as a running joke is honestly peak comedy. I'm imagining if they ever did another one of these games, for the last mission someone could ride along and politely ask him _not_ to crash his car this time. In response, Jack turns to the person, makes the smuggest face you can possibly imagine as he shifts the car out of park, before a time card pops up that says "38 seconds later" and immediately shows them crashed into the front door of the final mission with Jack still making that smug ass face.

14:09 This is unironically one of the funniest cutscenes I have ever seen in a video game. From the bad guy pointing out the protagonist's blatant stupidity, to him saying "aLwAyS sCHUT tHe fOOKing BAD GUYS FORST" in his cheesy russian accent with comically exaggerated animations, followed by him INSTANTLY shooting the girlfriend in the head before you get a chance to even process that... Absolute perfection.

I still have the Game Informer issue with the original Dead to Rights 2 on the cover. It was a direct sequel to the first game. I remember the story was to focus on the priest from the first game after he gets out of prison and Jack comes out of hiding to help him. There was going to be a refined gunplay and a new hand to hand combat system. New enemies like the knife thrower from the opening and a heavy type enemy that drops heavy two-handed weapons. Too bad we never got that game properly would've been awesome.

I'm someone notices the thing that made Jack stand out in the first Dead to Rights - he's a dork. And that's why I love him. He was also pretty easy on the eyes, but I won't get too much into that. And he had a nice voice that fit the character. Dead 2 Rights just turned Jack into Frank Castle dropping f-bombs like the game was set in Dresden. And they even made Jack look like Frank Castle. And they got rid of the guy who first voiced Jack and brought in Steve Blum, whose voice doesn't fit Jack at all. Also, the first Dead to Rights is pure camp in terms of story and dialogue but that's because it was written by Flint "Dungeons and Dragons" Dille. Dead 2 Rights' story and dialogue are not camp. Trust a man who has read every book and article on the subject. The game was written by a guy who worked as a camera loader for John Woo's American films. I looked it up on IMDB. A camera loader wrote this game. Oh, and while the first game's supposed to be noir, it actually had vivid color. Dead 2 Rights is not that. It's dull and flat and ugly. And the last worst part is that it's unfairly hard, as you said. It's like Namco thought that was one of the good things of the first game was it being butt bustingly hard. I had to use a cheat device to get through. Hey, they cheated me out of my money, the least I could do is cheat my way through their crappy game. Pace yourself. Don't jump into Dead to Rights: Retribution just yet. But when you do, watch the making of videos first. They're all over KZbin, especially on Gamespot's page. Watch them and see how they had such high hopes and ambitions for the game and then replay it. It's emotionally crushing. And I'm done with my TED Talk.

If I recall, this game is literally stitched together from assets from a cancelled sequel by the original developers, the original concept was that Jack would have become a punisher-like vigilante fighting crime after the first game. It probably explains why there's so many issues, as devs entirely new to the series were just thrown these assets and told to make something. Hence why Jack A: has more muscles and B: has a scar on his face that he got in the first game despite being a prequel. The PSP game is amusingly ALSO stitched together from the same set of unused assets, resulting in bosses from DTR2 being common enemies and most of the levels being the same, just shorter on the PSP version.

Looking forward to the Retribution review... it's definitely a guilty pleasure B-tier game for me, it's schlocky but damn is it satisfying to play. Seeing this makes me glad I accidentally dodged DTR2 as a kid though, I can't believe that was the product of three years of work. I wonder what happened behind the scenes lol

I had read a post on the Unseen64 website that this game was originally supposed to be a direct sequel. There was also talk of that for the PSP game, "Dead to Rights: Reckoning." If you read the post, you're also come across some pictures of character models that were used in this game and in the PSP game. I had also watched a stream of the original and this game. The man who did the commentary had dug up some info that Jack's original voice actor had recorded lines for the original version of this game but then the plans were changed.

Hope you reach 90k soon. I like your style. I think it was the Marc Ecko Getting up video that made me subscribe, I like how you talk about some lesser discussed titles and actually go in depth when others would just meme on the game (I have seen people shit on/meme on Getting Up) or just reiterate "game bad over and over. Personally I didn't even know this series had 3 games. I always assumed that the 360 version was the only game. I haven't played it but I do remember hearing it was a decent game.

I dunno for me this is one of those situations where everyone online has one opinion and mine has always been completely different. Dead to Rights 1 had a good story but gameplay was crap and it had too much mini games. Dead to Rights 2 was the perfect sequel for me, just action, action, slomo, tight arena shootouts - none of the boring stuff that wasn't shootouts. It focused on the stuff that I actually wanted from a video game. Also I would recommend Dead to Rights Reckoning for the psp, it's pretty good and I think even more streamlined the gameplay of DtR2

13 year old edgelord me thought that CGI intro cutscene (that also doubled as a trailer for the game) was the hypest shit every. It had the same energy as the ones made for that 50 Cent game that came out around the same time. Also worth mentioning is not only is this game a prequel, but the PSP exclusive Dead to Rights: Reckoning also serves as a prequel to DtR:2. While it's only logical to have them be self-contained stories as every plot thread in the first was tied up with a mountain of bodies, it only makes the Police Chief's reasons to frame Slate in the first game totally *insane* Why would he want to mess with the most dangerous man alive who no doubt has a bodycount in the 5 digit range by the events of the First game? Lol.

I've always felt the difference between max payne and dead to rights. Is max payne is an homage to film noir cop gone rouge story knowing when to be serious but also showing the effects this kinda story would have on someone. Dead to rights is more an over the top parody of the genre you can tell the tounge is in cheek when Jack says things like "don't worry...he's already dead." Or randomly quotes movies like the commando quote

I was really into the first one. I played it when I was 17 or so. My brother bought me this for my 18th birthday, and I hated it. Jack wasn't Jack anymore. I hated his new voice actor, and I hated the random locations that were just stitched together cause other games did it. It was a very bland sequel that made me very, very sad. I still have it as it's not in my nature to get rid of gifts. I sometimes try to play it, but when I go to put it in, I just remember how boring it is and instead end up playing Blood Omen or Soul Reaver.

This game story is not bad as a prequel but Jack's behaviour in this game is not matched with the first game. In DTR 1 Jack's behaviour is cool and emotionless . But in DD2 jack became Rude and had emotion after losing his Girlfriend. Even the jacks body figure looks much older than the first game. If the script writer of DD2 wrote a proper sequel story after the first game maybe we were satisfied with the good ending.
