This is a video I have been so excited to make!! Brook's brother told us about a spot where he caught mantis shrimp in the past and we finally got around to catching these CRAZY Creatures!!! Mantis Shrimp can be divided into two categories, the spear type and the club type. The ones we caught have spear like arms they use to capture prey. We used a little spear to capture these mantis shrimp, but other people use traps to catch mantis shrimp. I want to get back out there and catch more of these guys, if you know any spots and want to film a video reach out to me via email teethtv@gmail.com or instagram @landsharkoutdoors and lets do it!

Next time you go hunting for the shrimp make sure to have a cooler of ice water to plunge them in alive after you catch them do not let them warm up or you will get mushy meat.

Tip to anyone trying to get off shore in Florida: use the waterways. Authorities are patrolling beachfront/marinas/ramps (which is absolutely ridiculous). Now more than ever we need to be feeding our families and community with fresh fish. It's good for the soul.

From my trip to asia last year, I was told that you should cook them live. Once they are dead, the meat begins to deteriorate and becomes mushy instead of firm. I had it in Thailand and in Vietnam. I could tell the ones I had in Vietnam were probably already dead and chilling on ice. The ones in Thailand were still live in a tank before they had cooked them. Needless to say it was a completely different tasting shrimp in Thailand.

If I remember correctly I think lobsters and some crabs release a chemical that does that to the meat when they die. Thats why they are mostly cooked alive or killed right before cooking.

LOVE your videos, and just purchased a Dexter knife and about $100 worth of Mustad hooks using your discount codes. Thanks! A recommendation: When preparing any sort of prawn/shrimp, save ALL the shells, legs, heads, etc. Put those in to some boiling water for a few hours and render down until you get a rich shrimp stock. Add a splash of white wine, a touch of tomato paste, and some heavy cream. White pepper and salt to taste. You can use a roux or corn starch to thicken if you prefer. Voila, shrimp bisque.

The only time I've had Mantis Shrimp, it was prepared by an awesome Filipina lady and boiled in coca cola with lime, salt, clove, crushed garlic, thin sliced onion, and a few dashes of worchestershire sauce. She told me, you want them alive and for their tail to be curled up when you drop them in. Her claim their tail muscles pump up just like our muscles when flexed. So far up here along The Nature Coast and Big Bend, no one has ruined it. The last couple times I was out on the flats from the Crystal River Power Plant discharge, down to Homosassa Bay. The fish had pushed out from the rivers onto the flats and both the water temps and the bite were heating up. Trolling the hot water discharge from the power plant can produce some monster Jack Crevalle, Snook and Trout. Just in case you and Brook need a place to escape and restock your freezer.

Not sure if legs are what there called lol more like alien weaponry 👽 or little spears of doom 😆 there seriously horrible little creatures. Even when there on the floor of the boat theyl get ya no joke. We catch em at night time, we submerg green lights to catch shrimp and from time to time these things would come around. With the tide mostly and it was never just one, wed get quit a few of them. There such crazy looking things i couldnt get over it the first time we got them. One of my all time fav seafood my grandma used to prepare. I remember, It was hard to peel them without getting poke. The way we do it, we hold the tail and pull on the shell closest to the tail and whole thing comes off. IMO, the natural flavor of mantis shrimp is better than lobster.

It's nothing like the stuff in a can. I have loved it ever since. Is the Mantis Shrimp something that has been around for awhile? Or is it a freak of nature? Never heard of it before. I'm giving you some info but first of all thank you for giving us entertainment during this crazy period of time. Here in Italy mantis shrimp is specialty. They simply run out from the store every time. It's important just to buy them alive cause they must be fresh. You can cook them many way's : just steam them and serve Whit fresh parsley and olive oil or you can open them up from top like you did on the video, season Whit salt, pepper and fill them Whit a mix of grinded bread crunches, fresh finely cut parsley, garlic and olive oil. Then you cook them in oven till they get slightly browny on top. Also you can make nice fish sauce Whit them. Bouth white or red. You just finely chop some onion and put it to fry Whit a table spoon of olive oil till gold/brown. Then you put in mantis shrimp, garlic(let it cook 2/3 min ) and then you put about 50 ml of nice dry white wine. Let it reduce and they are ready. In case you want red sauce you just put some tomato sauce or fresh chopped cherry tomatoes and after some 5 min boil it's ready. If too thick add water or fish stock. From this sauce you have the base to make a good risotto or some spaghetti, linguini or maccheroni. PS: FOR THE SAUCE I REFER TO ABOUT 2 POUND OF MANTIS SHRIM SMALL/MEDIUM SIZE( a lil bigger than the smaller one you caught in video). Btw also the meat quantity is not constant but depends from the season. At leas the best ones here in Italy you can find them around Sept/October
