A. In the early 1800s, the handle on a casket was referred to as a huckle. The person who carried the casket was known as a huckle bearer. This term was commonly used in the funeral industry and has since evolved to become a slang term for pallbearers.
The term came into popular culture through the 1993 movie Tombstone, in wich Doc Holliday (played by Val Kilmer) famously said, “I’ll be your huckleberry.” This phrase has since been used to mean a willing executor of a given commission or task.
But what exactly is a huckle bearer? The term comes from the handles on a coffin, which were traditionally made of hickory wood. These handles were known as huckles, and the people who carried the coffin were called huckle bearers.
In modern times, the term pallbearer has largely replaced huckle bearer in the funeral industry. However, the term huckle bearer still holds a nostalgic and historical significance.

In the hundreds of threads and thousands of comments I've read on this subject in the last 10 years, no one has EVER been able to provide an example of anyone using the phrase "huckle bearer" before this movie came out. I've only seen it in discussions about the movie _Tombstone,_ that's the only place it exists!

Who made up that mess about "Huckle" coming from "hokel"? That's nonsense. "Hokel" is an adjective, means "Deceitful or Unreliable". Has nothing to do with a handle, and certainly nothing to do with "huckle". That's about as fake as "huckle bearer" itself is. LOL Huckle never meant anything remotely resembling a handle, either. Main definitions are "Hip, haunch" with "bump, hump" being secondary definitions. Mostly, it means "hip". Which is why we had the old song "Do the Hucklebuck", and that involved shaking your hips. Even if a huckle was a casket handle, you still wouldn't call anyone a huckle bearer. It's grammatically incorrect. Taken literally, it'd mean "handle carrier" or "handle bearer". Nobody would say that. You bear the LOAD, which would be the casket. Nobody would ask 6 people to be handle bearers for their loved one. The whole "huckle bearer" nonsense was made up on the internet. The oldest instance of that term you can find in any form or media is on the old Google Groups message boards in 1997. That's 4 years after the movie came out. Here's another way you can tell the term is fake: It doesn't exist in any form of print. Not any old newspaper, dictionary, obituary, book...nothing. Now everyone who was alive at the time of the Tombstone events is dead. There are many remaining news articles and other artifacts that document their funerals....and not a single one of them mentions who was the huckle bearers. But at the end of the movie, narrator Robert Mitchum talks about the pallbearers at Wyatt Earp's funeral. Mitchum was born in 1917, he was almost a teen when that funeral happened. He probably remembered hearing about it. You'd think that if they were "huckle bearers", maybe he would have corrected it? Or maybe the historical consultant would have caught that? BTW, anyone remember reading about Hucklebearer Finn and watching Hucklebearer Hound cartoons when they were kids? Yeah, me either.
