Wednesday morning marks 30 years since the deadly 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake rocked the San Fernando Valley. The catastrophic quake struck just seconds before 4:31 a.m. on Jan. 17, 1994.
KTLA's Annie Rose Ramos recalls, as a child, running downstairs with her family after the quake struck. “Part of our kitchen wall had actually caved in,” she said. Fortunately, Annie Rose says her family was fine but many others were not as fortunate. 57 people were killed and thousands more were injured.
KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on Jan. 17, 2024.

I will always remember that fateful day💔I lived just 10 miles away from the epicenter. As a child, I experienced the Sylmar quake in February of 71-72? Living in Glendale at the time.We were blessed to have had no major damage to our house in that quake. Went through the Loma Prieta quake in the 80’s as well. The Northridge quake was so different!!! It was a thrust fault quake which meant the motion was very up and down instead of side to side like the previous quakes I’d experienced. I had four small children by that time and my only concern was getting them to safety. That quake seemed to last forever!!! I had time to take pictures off the walls so they wouldn’t break. The aftershocks went on for what seemed like weeks. We finally packed up our family and stayed in Sedona, Az for a week to destress! Seems like yesterday! I can’t believe it’s been 30 years! There will always be another. My mantra is “Don’t be scared, be prepared!” Have a “Bug out bag, don’t forget a plan for your pets as well! Meds, flashlights etc. Extra water. The internet has awesome suggestions on how to be prepared. You will definitely feel better knowing that you have done what you could in advance. Much love to all of my SoCal family out there ❤💯🙏🏼

I was in Glendale too for the 71 earthquake too. We lost our chimney. But didn't damage anything nextdoor.

@@naomiemoore5725 omg what I thought that was so strange, is in the Northridge quake, everyone of our neighbors on the north side of our street lost their chimneys but not us on the south side! My husband spent all day helping out our neighbors with partially collapsed chimneys knock them down to the point where they were sturdy to withstand all of the aftershocks. My mom lived in Glendale at the time and we had to figure out how to get to her from west Simi by street because of the freeway collapses. Take care of yourself and your loved ones 🙏🏼❤️

I was only 5 years old when the Quake happened. My grandfather was with me when the shaking started and we were all jolted out of our beds. Our house wasn't severely damaged but we lost our fish tank along with 4 beautiful fish inside. To me it felt like the world was ending. But my family and I were alright and I thank God for that

January 17, 1994, I was 5 months old living in Canoga Park. I was born in Northridge in August of 1993. On that morning of this earthquake, my twin brother and I were sleeping in our cribs, my mom was asleep, my older siblings were staying at a friend's house where a party happened the night before and my dad was getting ready to go to work. After the earthquake, we temporarily moved to Douglas County, Georgia where my grandmother lived. We lived there for two years until we moved back to California and moved to Simi Valley in June of 1996.

I was 5 years old. 16 miles from the epicenter in Glendale,CA on the third story of a condo. I just recently realized I have PTSD from this event. 5 years old and I thought that I was going to die and it was the end of the world. Sad to think about my death being only 5. Every time I feel an earthquake I get scared and pray it doesn’t get bigger. Scariest thing. In 2008 or 2009 a 5.5 hit in chino hills. I was in chino. Epicenter again. I must have the best luck with these things..

I was there, lived in West LA at the time near 405 freeway. It was scary! I remember lots of chimneys collapsed at the side wall of houses. From that day on I had an earthquake kit in my garage and car ready with all the essentials. My dresser jumped to the ceiling bounced and landed on the bed, it didn’t even break the mirror. People I knew even walked to LAX to wait for a plane to Ireland, they were so terrified! Another ran home through Venice naked from a girls place he had just met! Oh the stories, lol. Two more got in a car and drove to Vegas vowing never to return then Vegas got a small one … lol.

The two plates slide against each other so we're not going to fall into the ocean, we're going to go north while the North American plate goes south.

How sad, it reminded me of the scene from the 2004 romantic teen-comedy film “A Cinderella Story,” Sam (Hannah Robinson) tragically lost her father, Hal Montgomery (Whip Hubley) in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake
