I preferred Depp's singing for the movie too because it made his character more grounded and gave life to his hatred for life! Where as the Broadway singer sung like an angel yet acted like a demon.
@idk_whatimdoing_13843 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with you in that regard, but I guess it depends on the song, because although Johnny deep did WAY better than Len carou in epiphany, I feel like carou was better at the humerous moments with the character, like try the oreist for example. Over all I prefer Depp, but I also understand why others prefer the original
@sofiacolon-ortiz2023 жыл бұрын
I saw the play at the Springer Opera House here in Georgia a few years ago, and the lead had a deep, rough, gravelly singing voice that was just so spot on for the character of Sweeney Todd, but Depp does do an amazing job too
@MidnightIsolde3 жыл бұрын
Eh. I don't agree with that. I get what you're saying - a lot if the time it may seem like they're too focused in perfect singing, so the acting goes out of the window. But please do listen to and see George Hearn and Len Cariou do this role - excellent singing and possess the menace, insanity, grief of the character. My first encounter with this musical was this film and at the time I was fanatical about Johnny Depp and loved everything he was in. Not so much anymore, I was in my early teens then so the fangirl-ism is understandable. However, now if I want to listen to the songs, I listen to the original broadway songs because I prefer them and they are objectively better considering that this is a Broadway stage show first and foremost. However, if I want to see more nuanced performance (and where strong vocal performancesdo not matter so much), I will watch the film. So, if I want to listen to great vocal/music performances, I'll have the Broadway recordings; if I want to watch a film I'll watch the film. You have to understand that theatre and film are different mediums and require different things.

6:53 -- Bit of a correction on this: Mrs. Lovett is not actually the one making pies from cat meat; she was singing about someone else known as Mrs. Mooney, who is said to also run a meat pie shop. This is indicated by these lyrics from _Worst Pies in London..._ "Mrs. Mooney has a pie shop. Does a business, but I notice something weird... ...lately all her neighbors' cats have disappeared. Have to hand it to her; what I calls enterprise- poppin' pussies into pies. *Wouldn't do in my shop.* *Just the thought of it's enough to make you sick!"* Furthermore, there is also the introductory part of _A Little Priest_ which has these lyrics... "Take for instance Mrs. Mooney and her pie shop; business never better using only pussycats and toast." If _Worst Pies in London_ tells us one thing, it's that Mrs. Lovett's shop was not successful in the least, so it makes no sense that she would say this about her own business. Based on these lyrics, Mrs. Lovett is referring to another woman (Mrs. Mooney) who has become something of a rival to her. This last bit is just a suspicion on my part: I suspect that Mrs. Lovett is implied to have apprenticed under Mrs. Mooney; when she sings the line, "And I'm telling you, them pussycats is quick," it sounds like she is genuinely speaking from experience, as if she had tried to chase and catch the cats before. But she already mentioned she didn't think highly of turning cats into pies, which may indicate that she was required to under professional obligation. What's more, when Toby speaks to her about what happens in the workhouses, Mrs. Lovett barely responds, shrugging it off as if she already knew. This might be an indicator that Mrs. Mooney found Lovett in a workhouse before hiring her. Again, just a suspicion.
@dmitryboardman97623 жыл бұрын
Seems like she's being a hypocrite for a comedic moment. She's only condeming Mrs. Mooney for using cats because Lovett tried and failed to copy her. Especially since once Lovett gets a meat supply from humans, she has no qualms about using them. I think they're purely rivals and never worked together and the lines are meant to form a punchline. Lovett's really saying "If I could catch cats to cook, I'd be doing it, but because I can't, I'll scorn the people who do."

There was so a clearly explained rule. It was the winner would be the one who gave the fastest and smoothest shave. Todd was the fastest and smoothest shaver whereas Pirelli (aka Davey Collins [in the movie] or Daniel O’Higgins [in the Broadway show]) just flaunted about and shaved the (poor) customer slowly and roughly while talking about his past customers who appreciated his “shaving skills”. Plus, Fogg was so killed off by the blondes in the movie. In the Broadway show, Anthony was supposed to have shot Fogg; but since he couldn’t, Johanna did the honors.

Johnny Depp was a musician and the guitarist of the band Rock City Angels before he ever became an actor. He was broke in the early 80s and was working on and off as a stage hand and was looking for a good-paying gig where his band could play. His roommate was a struggling actor, and suggested to Depp that he try out for a role as an extra in an upcoming television show, if only to get a bit part to help towards rent that month. He was cast as a lead in "21 Jump Street" and then a part in "Nightmare On Elm Street" and the rest, of course, is history since he was, at one time, the most in-demand and highest-paid actor in Hollywood. Like Will Smith (the first rapper to win a Grammy), people forget that Depp was initially a musician. Best to you-

I can’t explain how much I love this movie. I was obsessed from the second 13-year-old me saw the first trailer on early KZbin and immediately watched it 8,0000 times. Convinced my mom to let me pretend to be 16 to go see it in theatres. Bought the special feature dvd the day it came out and watched it and every feature and commentary at least once a week. I could often be found performing ‘The Worst Pies in London’ for my imaginary audience. I just love it. All these years later it’s still my favourite musical. When I was going through a rough time aged 17 (therapy after a bad breakup resulting in suicide attempt), my mom cheered me up by buying tickets for us to see the stage show and it was the thing that reminded me how to enjoy life and look forward to things. It was absolutely incredible onstage. Ironically, I think Sweeney saved my life. Forever grateful to Burton and Sondheim.

Wow, I was also obsessed with Sweeney Todd when it came out, when I was 13! I wanted to see it at the theatre sooo bad but my mom wouldn't let me. She pre-screened it and decided it was too bloody. Which was strange because I was usually allowed to watch whatever. I mean I saw all three Lord of the Rings in the theatre when I was 6/7 and fantasy/fakey violence never bothered me. But I constantly listened to the CD, had a Sweeney Todd poster and a couple of t-shirts. Finally it came out on DVD and I also had to have an uncomfortable medical procedure. My mom bribed me and said she'd buy me the DVD if I cooperated at the hospital. I did, and I watched that DVD at least once a day for months on end lol. I remember my mom being surprised that I wasn't the slightest bit grossed out.
