Tom Rothman is the reason why CEOs in Hollywood often get such a bad name. Don't get me wrong; making movies is a business after all. Companies need to make profit, for if not, why exist? However, I'd like to believe that making good movies and money aren't mutually exclusive; that you can do both. Rothman's Reign of terror is not a prime example. By undercutting Bryan Singer to holding a vengeful vendetta, Rothman in all honestly shot Fox in the foot. To backtrack, usually, one of the reasons why people work is to make a salary. They often do the best they can so as not only to make money, but also not loose their job. In addition, assuming there is a hierarchy(like an office), incentives such as higher positions and pay often incentivize people to work harder. Having given two very successful hits, it is only natural that Singer should have gotten a raise and be resigned as quickly as possible. But Rothman your attempts to undercut him have cost you dearly. Movie studios notice talent. As such, they are not afraid of offering more lucrative offers as a means to get that talent. So when Singer left, it was perfectly justifiable. So when you tried to move up the third X-men movie as an attempt to snub Singer, that was your folly, Mr. Rothman. Your hubris clouded your judgement. Because to conclude this post, while movie studios' purpose is to make money, having connections to other directors, I argue is just as important, if not more, than making immediate profit. Sure, immediate profits are tangible and such affect the company in big ways(raises, hiring, more budget allocation), but in the long run, a movie studio that doesn't have a stream of directors is like a car without gasoline. You can push it, but for only so many miles before it gives up. So overall, I normally do not like using foul language, but screw Rothman. You sac of crap. I hope Deadpool's success can be a burning reminder of shitty tenure at Fox. Also, Great work as always, Andre.

Great journalism, guys! This clarifies why Fox movies have been so underwhelming, weird, tame and uninspiring. It's sad. Because It wasn't like in the old days when they gave us great movies like Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, King Kong, Alien, Terminator, etc. I will admit I was a fan of Marvel/Fox. I watched all the X-Men, FF, Daredevil, Elektra, Aliens vs. Predators, Percy Jackson and etc in the theaters. I said they were good and entertaining. But there was always that nagging feeling that said I have to wake up one day and realize that these movies are actually not. Then BOOM! X-Men Origins: Wolverine happened. That was the time I finally saw the truth. That Fox really suck at making movies and I promised myself never to watch anymore in the theaters. However, Deadpool is a different case altogether! It looks promising. It's the only Fox movie I'm going to watch in the theater.

+ralph m the real problem is they are obsessed with making movies less than two hours which is the real reason josh trank went apeshit he had a 2 hour and 30 minute cut with a lot of character and story development, but the studio wanted basically an extended TV show pilot running at 100 mins. the re-shoots were there to try to patch the holes in the story-line that produced, and add humor. Didn't work. Not everything has to be a kids movie fox! hell all the deleted plot-lines were in the trailer. trank wanted to do something new with fantastic 4 they just wanted a more serious remake of the first movie. they did the same thing to jumper, the deleted scenes flesh out the movie and The X3 deleted scenes were awesome. If i were an editor id make a cut with those scenes put back in! This is why I want to try to get my "Raise the Britannic" movie made independently so I can actually make something worth a damn with a fucking story! And my style of music score everything is so interchangeable these days.

If these studio executives like Tom Rothman love being so hands-on and insistent on the movies being made their way then why don't they just direct the damn things themselves?
@alanboody70048 жыл бұрын
They don't actually have the 'talent' to direct. Just like when execs from other industries join a game development company (EA, for example). It becomes: make last year's version, but with better graphics! Generally, the games that tank hard are the ones the execs had more hands on. For movies, this mainly occurs when they get their mitts on beloved franchises or source material that they don't read or understand themselves.
@Simple1Jack8 жыл бұрын
Alan Boody Let's be honest, it wouldn't be the first time someone with zero talent directed a movie.
@altmarket8 жыл бұрын
It's a typical trait of narcissistic micro-managers - they want other people to do all the hard work while they look over shoulders and add their "stamp" to everything. In their minds, they then become the "creator" of the project, even though the project would have been far better off without them. If the project fails, they can blame the director or the writers or any other scapegoat. If it succeeds, they can sing their own praises about how every part of the project was their idea. See how that works...?
@alanboody70048 жыл бұрын
altmarket Yeah. Exactly. I think the actual creators are the directors, developers, designers, actors, special effects artists, etc etc. It's a shame just a few bad decisions by a micro managing manager/ceo/exec can kill a project that a bunch of 'talented' people put together.

This movie was like David and Goliath: literally everything was against it (first-time director, stars character who failed before, lower budget, etc.), and yet came out on top. Just goes to show what a little faith can do
@alanboody70048 жыл бұрын
Just goes to show what will happen if you let people with talent and skills do, you know, what they're talented and skilled in. Sounds like Rothman was essentially an armchair director that had no business making creative or greenlighting decisions.

it wouldn't have mattered, those movies couldn't have been worse if they tried. besides, fox had nothing to do with the prequels as lucasfilm was an independent studio. fox was just the distribution.

With the 2015 Fantastic 4 film. Fox knew their were problems early on in production with Josh Trank. The problem was they felt if they fired him the film would have to be delayed and they would lose the rights back to Disney. Fox didn't want to risk losing the rights. With the earlier Fantastic 4 films their were problems before the films were released. Jessica Alba has since said she hated working on the films and only did the second one because she was contractually obligated. With Fantastic 4 two, they combined the story of what was supposed to be 2 films into one. The original idea for Fantastic 4 and 3 was that the Silver Surfer would be the villain in the second one and then it would set up Galactus for the 3rd one. Fox lost faith and weren't sure they would make a third one so they basically combines the ideas for both films into. We did see a tease for the Sentinal's in X-men 2

+Midnight's Edge Could you please do a video like this about Grace Randolph? She is like the female version of Tom Rothman, and a former Marvel employee. She thinks that Brie Larson would suck as Captain Marvel and that the role should be for Blake Lively, she thought that Deadpool should get a PG-13 cut, she supposedly hated Civil War, she tried to get James Gunn off of Guardians of the Galaxy, and she loved the new Ghostbusters trailer

This reminds me of what happened to Disney during the later years of Micheal Eisners as CEO. He forced many mandates, made sure executives were making the creative decisions, and basically burn down bridges with Hollywood. Most notably Pixar whom owner Steve Jobs was planning to separate from over his hatred to Eisner. Eventually the Disney shareholders had enough of him and the board of directors outright fired Eisner from his position. They then chosed Bon Iger as the new CEO and he has allowed an hands off approach to the company and left creators to do their own thing and brought the company back on its feet.
@MidnightsEdge9 жыл бұрын
+Brandon Lyon Not only that, Bob Iger was instrumental in Disney buying both Marvel and Lucasfilm for 4 billion each, and then supported them while they did their thing - which turned out to be possibly the best decisions in Disney history.

Yeah but knowing him the films he hates would be changed by him to fit his own idea like he would have made Deadpool have the laser eyes and beat up Tim Miller like he was Uwe Boll beating up a negative critic if he didn't comply

+Midnight's Edge. I find it funny that when I was watching a Fox Legacy episode about "Cleopatra" (since I have the movie on Blu-ray), Rothman says a bunch of stuff about how studio execs should not bother with a director's vision on a big, historical epic. And yet this is the same f**kwad who demanded Ridley Scott to cut off important scenes and plot points from another big, historical epic (Kingdom of Heaven) so that Rothman can get more butts in theaters and market it as a swords and sandals, adventure film even though it was more of an action-drama about religious conflicts.
@Lazarus10957 жыл бұрын
What I find the most amusing about all this is that the single best X-Men film ever made just came out, and it ends with every single X-Man dead, without exception. Maybe Rothman's problem was that he didn't go far enough...

I love your work Midnights Edge. I recently did a review of Fant4stic and I linked to your Trankgate series to provide additional context to the audience of my criticisms of Josh Trank. I would probably say Tom Rothman has been the second greatest villain to cinema of all time. The greatest being Michael Bay
@MidnightsEdge9 жыл бұрын
+Loudmouth Reviews Thanks for the shoutout, enjoyed your Fant4stick review a great deal! As far as the greatest villain to cinema of all time goes, I agree that Rothman deserves to be very near or possibly at the top spot. I can see why many might feel that way about Bay too, but he at least can only influence movies that are either directed by him personally or made by Platinum dunes. Franchises that transcend its own celluloid, such as Alien, Predator, Firefly, Die Hard, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Hitman and more are all out of Bay's reach, while Rothman has screwed up every single one of them. That earns him a few more points in my book;p
@LoudmouthReviews9 жыл бұрын
+Midnight's Edge My first review on my site was for Alien vs Predator Requiem and I kind of regret not giving Rothman a mention in it. I picked it as the first to review because I honestly consider it to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen period. I say Bay is the worst thing in cinema because while most filmmakers who are met with terrible reviews seem to be hurt by things like that Bay on the other hand seems critic proof. No matter how much advanced warning is given that his movies will be yet again more lazy trash his movies still open big. I guess its more of an indictment on the movie going public than on Bay but it is still very frustrating to see such a lack of effort and talent get rewarded. That's why I still consider him cinema's greatest villain because he shows that treating the audience like idiots can be profitable which probably sends a bad message throughout the industry

What I don't get is why would he make safe bets as a businessman. Isn't the whole point of being in a business, especially the movie business, is to take risks. At the very least he could have taken some risks while he was at Fox.
@mrcritical67518 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Gomez well in the movie business every idea could be your last every film you green light could be your last a good example of a film taking a risk and suffering is the new Ghostbusters which despite getting mainly positive reviews and being Certified Fresh it bombed due to the risk it made Rothman doesn't want to take those risks for example the sentinels could be seen as goofy and too weird for mainstream audiences which Rothman thought could effect the films performance
@solesurvivorstudios68138 жыл бұрын
Mr Critical Ok, I don't disagree with your statements, but I'm sure he was more than capable of every once in a while going against his ideas about film and put forth something like "lets do this and see how audiences take it". IDK, just playing it safe throughout his years at Fox just didn't seem beneficial to him or the film studio. Good thing he works at Sony; God knows that they can't take too many blows. lol.
