I don't understand when people say that this is biased towards anime, sure e;r is a huge weeb but most of the points here actually make sense, comparing two pieces of work that try to do the same thing but with different results.
@dimitrispolimeros61866 жыл бұрын
Yes! And another thing is that E;R clearly knows what he is talking about and brings up some legitimate points to support his opinions. He analyses the characters in such a way that only someone who really cares and understands what they truly are can have so much to say (for example when he is talking about the tragedy of Saitama's tragedy).
@pepegaprogrammer4 жыл бұрын
I can kinda answer that, you got fanboys like me who agree with other opinions that he has, but pull out their glocks when they hear that their favorite character is getting some critisism. One of the reasons I love Saitama in One Punch Man is because he's an odd extension of the Hero's Journey. He has returned to the ordinary world with god-like powers. So now what? Any goals, obstacles, mentors, allies, enemies, are left in the years of his transformation. All that's left is the ordinary world trying to deal with Saitama and his incredible strength.

I thoroughly enjoyed trampling enemies at max level so I don't get your point. I never played games for the challenge and I generally hate being challenged by my entertainment as I view it as an escape from challenge. I like hurting people who pick fights with me though. I used to imagine the shock and horror as a squad of elite Shinra soldiers suddenly discover that their target is unkillable and then he slowly toys with them, inflicting them with all kinds of negative statuses and kills them with the weakest abilities in the game. Never gets old in game or irl. I never picked fights and hate people who do, but I get off on punishing those who try to hurt me in any way. I was jailed for torturing an attacker to the point of being crippled once then carving on his face while laughing. They called it malicious wounding, I called it justice with a side of fun.

I think we have reached the post-irony part of narrative subversion: The subversions are so damn common and well-known that a genuine subversion will be playing the narrative towards a subversion, but at the last moment playing all the tropes straight while asking the audience why were they expecting anything different. Just like Mumen Rider understands what being a hero is and knows that it's not about if he can beat The Sea King, but rather if he stands against him; Saitma understands that it's not about his personal glory for beating The Sea King, but rather the face and pride of all the other heroes that were beaten by The Sea King. This is what makes both of them a hero in my opinion.

I've been enjoying all your videos these past few days and am officially subscribed. Now as for this video specifically, I always assumed Deadpool was a movie made by the main character "Deadpool" where "Deadpool" is literally directing the movie while he's in it. He breaks the fourth wall a lot (which is what the character of Deadpool does, but whatever) and pauses the film to add little notes or silly jokes. Not sure if this constitutes as subversive, but it is something a little unique. I just wish if that's how they were really planning on filming the movie, by making it a film where literal "Deadpool" made all the decisions including casting, plot, diologue, ect in order to make himself look like a badass superhero, then maybe they should have made it more obvious that that was what they were doing. I don't know. Did this even make any sense? Nvr mind.

All these years later, I understand a bit on why I enjoyed Deadpool the movie and the comic book character for a time, and why I don't after maturing: He is a pure power fantasy on the level of The Boys comics. He is the strawman of what the public thinks of edgy teenage boys: unstoppable, dangerous, cannot be stopped, but ultimately harmless. When I acted like one, he stood out to me. When I matured out of it, I rejected him. As for One's characters, those touch on topics which transcend a particular genre or trope. One Punch man deals with the realities of what a literal undefeatable hero would be like. God like powers, but ultimate boredom, in a world which does not understand or appreciate him, and he lacks the ability to stop or change any of it. Sort of the opposite of most Whu Shu novels, or Mary Sues in the West. Mob represents that awkward years for boys becoming men where the ultimate truth for boys is not quite understood, and shoot, most men refuse to accept it: what makes your path in life, is what you choose to do in each moment towards a goal. That is, you are not predestine towards one clearly obvious path, like Mob's strong powers push him towards, but what you will yourself to be. For a historical comparison, this is the difference between Roman slave education, what our modern education is based on, and the Cicero's proscribed education system: one educates a man for a singular task that he is damned to, and the other trains a man to adapt to his circumstances, overcome them, and make his situation better for it. Mob follows in Cicero's footsteps, where as Deadpool follows in the Roman slave's footsteps. As one golf enthusiasts once said, "A man chooses. A slave obeys."

To be honest, I thought Saitama was a character to look up to after he beat Deep Sea king and taking the blame. Also l, just because the training does not explain the power does not mean, he didn't work for it at all. I mean doing the same repetitive routine every day, especially as a normal human is not something that can be taken lightly imo at least.
@TransformersBoss11 ай бұрын
One of the things that’s oddly relatable about Saitama is that he’s akin to the player-character in a game that you’ve beaten. When you beat a game, and you have all the power ups, all the unlockables, and killed all the bosses, when you’ve 100%ed the game, there’s nothing left to do. I have an old Harry Potter game on Gameboy Color where, whenever you beat Voldemort at the end, the game sends you back to Hagrid at the beginning of the game, but you keep your same level, stats, and some of the collectibles. You can beat the game repeatedly and make Harry absolutely busted. It’s kind of funny, but also gets a bit boring when you’re so strong you can one-shot Voldemort. It is a neat game aspect, though, since most games kick you back to your last save-point when you beat the game.

The weird shit about One Punch Man is that Power seems to be inextricably linked to Ego. Saitama puts in a pitiful effort that he views as super human, so his Ego makes it so. Boros and Sea King are powered by the absolute belief in their own supremacy. Garou is consumed by his own belief in his self-righteous monsterhood. Darkshine's bower is based entirely on his own belief in his own muscles. Fuhrer Ugly is powered by the negative Ego of his own self-hatred. Its all about ego. And the only real, classic Shounen characters in the series (Mumen Rider and Genos) exist purely as punching bags for the Ego fuelled villains. That deliberate linkage of immature, teenage ego and absolute power are at the same time the most classic Shounen hero trope and the most absolute counter to the classic Shounen hero trope. The subversion is in itself a parody of itself. Its absolute genius in its utter stupidity.

This reveals the mental devastation caused by the anchoring effect. Just being told a movie is a subversion will cause people to believe it even when it's not true. As an aside I love all the small edits and sounds in this video. It's a lot of fun to watch. Colossus was definitely the best.

Hey man, you said Saitama isn’t as much of a G as Big M. Rider. Not true. He was first person to oppose monsters even thought he had no powers. And he won quite a few of this fights. That’s pretty admirable.

This is the one way I can defend Deadpool despite all the valid points made here. It at least delivered something fans did want to see. They kinda all got seriously blue balled by the version of him in Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds was passionate about bringing a more faithful version of him to the big screen. And I think at the least it kinda earned a bit of respect for that, especially considering it wasn't TOTAL garbage despite some pretty dumb bits that were supremely stupid and didn't really need to be in there....mostly everything involving Wade before becoming Deadpool and how he is constantly taking his mask off which always leads to not funny scenes. I contest he's at his funniest in the scenes where the full suit and mask are on, cause then it does feel like Deadpool. And that's when everyone else isn't acting like him minus the fourth wall breaking. tl;dr It's probably the best we're gonna get for the character.

I'd argue with you on one point. OPM actually has a lot of societal commentary. Any big organization will only acknowledge talent through their own stuck up means. They're inflexible resulting in Saitama's status as a C hero despite having more power than any S class.
@sweetpeagrayble58582 жыл бұрын
Deadpool had the chance to be great, actually about a million chances, but threw them all away. The most important would be that the torture he was put through made him super-powered AND a total schitzo. Van Wilder was edgier, there should have been no chance of that being the case, but here we are. Then there's Deadpool 2, hard to consider it a real movie, closer to something out of Bollywood, no edge, boring(in a Deadpool movie, c'mon!?) with an unlikable, unnecessary fat kid as a co-star(?). They could have made both movies on a dime(other than Ryan Reynolds paycheck), Deadpool's real power is in his dialogue. He has a free-pass to talk to himself, make dark disturbing jokes, find enjoyment in the sick and twisted, break the 4th wall AND, this is huge, his motivations don't have to make sense nor should they, he's crazy! But whatever, keep pretending copyright protects personal intellectual property instead of guaranteeing that mega-corps keep destroying innovation, creativity and everything fun. /s

I'm pretty happy with OPM's soundtrack as is. Fits like a glove. As to your original question, two channels get some mention 'round here, YourMovieSucks and DouchebagChocolat (Demo D), who do movie and anime reviews respectively and are far and away better at this thing. If you don't already know 'em, can check those guys out. (Also, sweet profile pic. ;D)

You bring up an interesting point late into this video: Eastern superhero stories tend to be about the great effort to become powerful, while western ones focus on a person struggling to do the right thing with great power just dropped into their lap. Of course, some stories do both of these.
