Hey guys! Ryan here. I just wanted to add that if we are in the store or wherever and we are all wearing masks, please do not try to communicate with me. It is very difficult to understand signing without the ability to use facial expressions.😄

First and foremost, I enjoyed this video as I do all your others. 2nd: Coffee! LOL And 3rd: I worked in a book store when I was younger. Used to get so excited when one specific customer came in, because we would have a full on convo in ASL-- I got to practice, and we each got to know one another a little more--the few times he came in. The first time we met, he was signing with his sister, and they were kind of just standing in the middle of the store, so I went right up and asked if I could help them find anything. No one else on staff signed. Some of my coworkers were just watching them converse, amazed but unable to understand what was being said. I never did ask why he signed. You just brought it to my attention that people might do that, and that it might be a very personal thing for him or someone else. Also, it seems like a strange way to start a conversation. No one walks up to me and says, "hey, can you hear me when I talk?" LOL. (I sure can, Bob, but I'm starting to wish I couldn't.) It would make more sense to verify that I speak English, so I like the idea of asking "Do you sign?" Thanks for these insights. Now that I'm a bit older, I always feel awkward starting up conversation with strangers (which is why I kinda force myself to say hello to one stranger every time I leave my house... Feels good to greet others with a smile, and maybe get a smile back.). It's a good reminder that we are all people, no matter what language we speak. Thanks again for the reality check.

I just found your guys' channel, this is great!! I started learning ASL in 7th grade when I had a deaf teacher and decided I liked it a lot so I took her ASL class with my normal classes with her too and it was great. I remember being up in Estonia, and this person saw I was deaf, and started signing to me. They were deaf also, but it was such a connection because I was a foreigner and we managed to find each other while shopping for produce. They were signing in their native sign and I in mine and though neither of us really understood each other, it was the best moment of the entire trip! Like YES DEAF SAME. I learned ASL in college, as I was getting my degree in special education and it was part of the curriculum. I used it quite a bit as a teacher, but the best interaction I had was on a playground. I had taken my daughter, and there was a very young girl sitting on the swings. She was only about 4 years old and her mom was quite far from her, talking to another adult. I asked her if she wanted help and realized she couldn't hear me so I asked her using sign language. She was so happy and started talking to me and then I pushed her on the swing. Her mom noticed and approached me with concern. After communicating with her daughter, she started to cry and she thanked me. She said that it is so very infrequent that her daughter can talk to anyone due to the language barrier. It was such a simple thing to me, but it meant the world to them both ❤️

I've definitely caught myself staring at people I've seen using ASL before because I just find it so amazing to watch, how rapidly they can sign, I think it's such a beautiful language! I had gotten a sandwich in a Subway once on my lunch break and was looking to sit and eat quickly. There was only one free chair and it was at a table with two other girls. I walked up to them and asked if I could sit there. They looked at me confused and gestured that they were deaf. I gestured to the char and they nodded and smiled. After I finished eating I was able to sign "thank you" and "nice to meet you" and they signed that they were happy to talk to me. Another time I was at a beach enjoying the day. I don't remember how I got into the conversation, but I was talking to a deaf girl and her interpreter/friend using whatever sign I could. I was having a great day that day and was smiling a LOT. lol. I guess my smile left an impression because when we finished our conversation she gifted me my sign name. I personally have met and signed with a few deaf people- I've been teaching myself ASL at home for a few years & took a class in college - and they said they appreciated me trying to speak to them! I get being nervous or not wanting to sign wrong because you feel like you might offend the person, but in my experience the response to my attempts at communication has been overwhelmingly positive! I was even told by one young deaf girl that my signing to her made her so happy because people had been speaking through her interpreter all day and not even acknowledging her. I encourage you to pick up ASL if you're interested because it's such a beautiful language! I'm studying medical ASL now in the event I encounter deaf patients later on. But I often get deaf customers where I work and they always really appreciate the fact that I can sign and help them (if they need it). My high school ASL teachers also taught us about deaf culture and etiquette so I try not to interpret for people unless they ask. The confirmation is good to know especially since you don’t wanna come off as rude or inconsiderate.

Hi Ellen and Ryan! Thank you for these videos. As someone with social anxiety, it's really hard for me to interact with people, so being able to learn anonymously how to be a better neighbour to deaf people in my region is soooo helpful. This channel is a wonderful ambassador and introduction for how hearing people can be respectful to deaf people. Ryan, I think it's wonderful that you don't mind chatting with people if you have a moment. That is a very kind offer, and suggests you have a lot of patience and tolerance. I'm in the LGBTQ+ community, and I have mental health obstacles, and while I will happily talk a stranger's ear off about the mental health stuff, I really dislike talking to strangers about the LGBTQ+ stuff. If people ask me questions about that, I try to direct them to people who - similar to the both of you - make it their goal to educate people about their experiences. Which is, I think, an overly personalized way of saying thank you for being ambassadors for deaf culture and being willing to teach us how to be better citizens of the world that we all share. Anyways, thanks again, you're both brilliant.

This is interesting! In my ASL class we learned it's considered kind of rude if you see someone who's doing sign language and you don't attempt to communicate, even if you have a very base level of the language.
@silvergraniandhergrumpygno4134 жыл бұрын
When I was growing up, my military family lived overseas in several countries for 2-4 years at a time. We were taught that it was rude to not even try to communicate in the host country’s language. As soon as we were notified of our upcoming duty station we would dive into learning that county’s language through the Berlitz language guides that were available to us. As school children once we reached our host country our school always taught that country’s language as part of our daily classes. So, I would think that would be the same when trying to communicate with someone who uses ASL.

I just found your channel today, when I was looking up on how to keep ears moist! So glad I got recommended to this! I really want to thank you for putting out this needed awareness for the deaf community! Since I can speak(only 1 language-English), I don't sign. Yes, I am hoping to learn sign language soon. You're right about "heightened senses", expressions, how to communicate in the dark since I depend on lip reading and mostly guessing the words. Yes, you're right about depending on the situations to understand what they're trying to say as well! It applies to me as well. Umm, however I do have a question: KZbin channels or any other video platforms most times do not put English subtitles and that dampens my learning/understanding, it really sucks. How do you cope up with it? Let's face it, lip reading is hard as hell. Sometimes we can't get if they speak faster or in mumbles. Right? So like, it has become my biggest wish to make transcripting/adding subtitles compulsory. You could maybe play a big part in it! No pressure, just an idea or a suggestion really. You could give suggestions/add more too! I appreciate what you're doing in this channel. :)

When I was in elementary school my best friend’s dad was deaf so her family all spoke ASL. I was really close to them and I spent a lot of time with them and had fun going to places for the deaf. I was really fascinated and learned the basics, but we lost touch and now, a few years later, I only remember a few words and the ABCs. She told me that reading lips was a myth and it’s frustrating when people assume deaf people can read lips. This brings me to my question, as a person born deaf, how did you learn to read lips as you were raised learning ASL? Also, if someone were to just speak to you, without signing, how well could you understand them? Ps. Just found ur channel, but I’m obsessed! You got nice coffee mug there! ☕️

Yes exactly. I know this thank you Yago and Alex. I was asking how easy it is to understand. I looked into the various linguistic trees of sign languages and where they branch off last night which answered my question. Like with spoken languages sign languages have different linguistic branches other languages from the same branch are easier to understand while if they have different roots they vary much more widely. An example with spoken languages is people who speak French or italian will be able to understand more Portuguese without learning any than they would be able to understand Xhosa.

The 0.1% rate of ASL speaking Americans is astounding and makes my heart ache a little knowing that the other 99.9% of American population is out of reach for communication without a huge struggle, making daily life a struggle ... and it shouldn't be ... anyways I've rambled a whole lot. I am "hearing" but I can't always speak, and I learned Sign Language as a way to be able to communicate. Right now, though, I've been struggling as it's been a long time since I've completely lost my voice, and I realized that I no longer have anyone around me who understands ASL. But I came across this channel right before I lost my voice again (no telling when it will come back, if ever), and you don't know what you've done for me with them. I feel a bit connected again, less alone. And, even when the video is about something not-so-happy, they're still positive. Thank you so much for posting these. They've made my life that much happier.

I just wanted to ask you both that : when you were young did you ever knew that you're gonna be this famous?? And I'm very happy that I discovered your channel becuz of that I'm a little good at sign language than before so thanks a lot and till not I'm partially deaf from both my ears so because of you both I never felt like I'm the only one who's deaf cuz I'm the only one in my whole family tree and my friend group and my school who's partially deaf so it's a little difficult to attend my online classes and rn I'm in 6th grade so in our school it's a system that when we go in middle school all the teachers will be changed so Al my new teachers are a little confused to talking to me and whenever I talk it's a little muddled and loud so it's a problem...............but I'm trying to understand my online classes a much as i can. But thanks anyways..... (btw i became partially deaf 1 year ago I don't know how?? )

I’m deaf too!! Mostly deaf, I wear hearing aids all the time. I totally know how that feels. It’s kind of a breath of fresh air to meet deaf ppl cause sometimes I feel lonely in being the only deaf person in my friend groups.

I signed up for skillshare 2 months using your link, and i've been using it ever since, so far, I know basic words to hold a conversation and over 50 food words! im hoping to be fluent one day, and maybe even teach when I get older, thankyou so much, you truly inspire me, happy holidays!

Coffee!! ☕️ You two are adorable together. And Java is such a cutie!! I took a small amount of ASL in college however I was better at it as a child. I would sign to my grandpa because he had his larynx removed so instead of making him talk with his microphone I would sign to him. I hope to learn more from you guys. I just found your channel today. Unfortunately, the first video I saw was the McDonalds drive thru video. Absolutely shocking how those people behaved. To make people feel like that is awful. I hope to see more positive interactions for you in the future!!

coffee. I love learning ASL. My current relationship is just like yours. I am hearing while my partner is deaf. We share lots of things and make sure we are giving back. Great videos and keep up the great content.

Coffee!!!! And Anytime I see someone who is deaf I try my best to talk with them even though I'm not completely fluent. Without fail everytime they seem to appreciate the effort. It's nice to be able to have a conversation with someone who doesn't expect it.

Coffee is how I survive college. Unfortunately my school doesn't have any ASL classes, but I've been learning for a few years now. I know everyone says this, but you guys are a real inspiration and I love watching your videos

Thank you Ryan for your feedback on this. If I was to come across someone who was deaf, being nervous would be a factor, but the other would be a respect thing. I don't know if I would want to go up to someone who doesn't know me, because I don't want them to think I'm disrespectful of their privacy, time and space.

Refreshing my ancient, out-of-practice knowledge of ASL and stumbled across this video after watching one of yours from a year ago. Interesting channel and concept! And I enjoy a cup of coffee every work morning. :D

reminds me of a time when i was in estonia and went on a one-day tour with a lovely old couple. The wife was deaf and the husband was hearing. And though he did know how to sign, he also prepared a few notebooks with him to help others to have smooth conversations with his wife directly. Personally I really appreciated that and was able to have great talks with them during the trip. (She also said that the notebooks were like journals in a way

I start every morning with a cup of coffee 😂😅 I'm so glad I found you guys! I'm a teacher and most of my students are nonverbal. Because they are so young, I try to learn simple signs to teach them so that I understand when they need something (i.e. bathroom, eat, water, hurt)

Hello!! COFFEE Lol You guys are great. Please continue your great work. I'm learning little by little using sign language. I work in healthcare so coming home and watching some of your videos has been very helpful because I never know when I'll get a patient who is deaf. Take care, stay healthy and safe.

COFFEE! I just want to say thank you for answering the question, Im in the very basics of ASL, and personally i feel like i want to go up and try my best to communicate, but I just keep myself quiet, since i dont want to butcher anythingand make things worse, so this was very helpful!

i just found your channel and i am learning SO much. I am not deaf but hard of hearing due to a genetic condition. On top of that, I have autism and so even if i can hear what someone says my brain often fails to understand! I have watched my mom's hearing decline over the years, and my grandmother can hear very little now in her 90s. I want to learn ASL because hearing aids are pricey and i am growing increasinly tired of asking people to constantly repeat themselves. i also didn't realize how heavily i too rely on lip reading until this pandemic! Thank you so much for your channel.
