@lovelygirl101221

@@banyvillarreal8143 maybe there is a slight difference bc ASL 'translator' feels like someone who is giving direct translation from one language to the other word for word, but I find that it's very hard to directly translate ASL to English & vice versa because of different sentence structures and the underlying meanings (honestly for most language interpreting). Which is why ASL 'interpreter' feels more accurate since they have to interpret both ASL and English and convey in the other language without losing the core message that person is trying to convey. That being said, I don't think a lot of people mind it being used interchangeably anyways haha

One thing I learned quickly when I met my boyfriend, was that he can’t tell when I’m being sarcastic. So I would say things and he would think I’m being serious at first. Now he’s used to my sarcasm and can tell most of the time. And it’s also crazy because sometimes we don’t even have to communicate, he will know what I’m trying to say just by my eyes/facial expressions.

I am hard of hearing. I can hear a little with out my hearing aids. My boyfriend is hearing. We know each other very well. When we go to bed and i can't see him. I can feel him. If i say somthing funny. I can feel him laughing. If he say somthing it take a while to know what he says or I just repeat what he says. It more feeling him knowing if he awake or talking or what ever going on. During the day. If we are out and about. I can't all ways hear him. Just looking body language and reading lips. We know each other really well. That we don't even have to talk. And knowing what each thinking or what we want to do. If you blindfold yourself just be with you your boyfriend or girlfriend. You know there touch. ( sad,mad,love,happy or they just need more love or hugs). If you plug your ears. You can see there body language and face expression. I can look at my boyfriend and we don't say one word. I know if he is tires, what go go, just not happy or if he is happy. If he comfortable or not. I can see it. If you know your boyfriend or girlfriend really well you don't have to say a word. It like having a baby you know what they want or needs. They can't talk or can't like that good. Or you know someone that can't talk at all. You been with them long enough to know what they wants or needs. Or how they feel.

I have a question. When Ryan reads, does he “hear” the words in his head like a hearing person does? Not all the time, of course.. we look at words all day and don’t “hear” them, but for example when you’re reading a fiction novel and the narration is in your head.

Sign language written out when you’re learning it in a class setting is so much different than English, that’s why it’s considered its own language and there are different variations of it
@morley364
@morley364 4 жыл бұрын
I've heard a little about this- basically, your 'internal voice' is used for a lot of things- remembering things you've read earlier in a paragraph/book, formulating your thoughts, processing emotions, etc. It's actually a vital part for many parts of your internal processing. Deaf people's internal voice tends to be in sign if it's their first language or the language they feel is their voice. Obviously this varies if they grew up hearing and became deaf, or if they are partially able to hear, etc. If they never learn sign, and can't hear enough for their speaking voice to feel like 'their' voice (if that makes sense), they may not have an internal voice and can suffer in some of the areas the voice is used for, most notably reading long texts and remembering as they go. Hope that helps!
@alexmcevity4511
@alexmcevity4511 4 жыл бұрын
I’m profoundly Deaf from birth and I can confirm that we can ‘hear’ the word in our head whilst reading (It varies with Profoundly Deaf people). When people speak whether we hear them (in my case with my hearing aids) or only lip read (or both) we associate the word we read to what we have perceived it as either via hearing speech and/ or seeing sign language! It all depends on factors such as; our learning opportunities (speech therapy & school), how hard we’ve worked to be able to understand, hear and use the English language & literature to a reasonable/ good level, family background (beliefs & culture) etc so it really does varies. Hope this helps! 👍

More than just sign language, you’re showing us that communication is more than speaking and furthermore, how vital it is that as human beings we find ways to understand one another. You’re relationship is a great example of how WE CAN reach the point of understanding one another even if you don’t know the language or culture, it’s the genuine interest in someone that makes for a safe place for us to educate ourselves and become better human beings.

I dm'd you guys a very similar question about this on Instagram a few months ago, so I'm really happy that you guys made a video about this. :) Thank you for your content! Not only are your videos educational in the language aspect, but super helpful with learning cultures and daily lifestyle customs.

Im a hearing person and ive been taking asl classes for almost a year (as a hobby, not in school or anything - just for fun and out of pure interest). Im pretty comfortable with the amount of vocabulary i know and recalling it when I'M signing but now im working on my recieving skills. I just found ur channel today and ur videos seem to be really helpful and are well produced. SUBSCRIBED! (Also im a hopeless romantic and am in love with you two #couplegoals)

I don't know aslfluently for when I'm watching deaf people sign I understand them completely because it's almost like you have to have common sense or an imagination to imagine what they would be saying if they were using word with a voice! I get really frustrated when I'm trying to communicate back because I don't know all the signs but I'd make them up as I go and most of the time they can understand me because we're on the same topic!!

That’s the Tustin market place! That’s so cool that you guys are so close to me. I took ASL for 3 years in highschool and have started to forget it since I have nobody to practice with. When I use to work retail I’d use it to speak to customers who were deaf and I lovedd being able to lend a helping hand to them. I wish I had somebody to sign with !

I’m so happy I came across your channel! My daughter is hard of hearing, with progressive hearing loss. We are learning ASL as a second language as a family. Also, she LOVES Java and is now asking for a deaf dog (her school interpreter also has a deaf dog).

I would love to see more videos of you guys vlogging or interacting in public!! I am interested to see how often Ellen interprets for Ryan/does the ordering at restaurants, how people react to seeing you guys signing, how often people are willing to sign with Ryan or gesture if they dont know asl. Your video going through the drive thru was great and made me curious how other interactions go!

Facial expressions were the most important part of ASL classes when I took a few many years ago. As a hard of hearing person myself (who didn’t grow up signing) reading lips, body language and facial expressions are much more important than the actual words one speaks. As a side note, if I watch your videos just before bed, like I am tonight, I end up signing in all my dreams! Love that! Lol G’night all!

I love love love all of y’all’s videos!! I’m in ASL 1 this year & it’s super important for people to bring up things like this so I’m not always so focused on “trying to get the signs correct” :) Can’t wait time binge every single future vid☺️

Whoa! That is so fascinating! When you mentioned you learned your partner's facial expressions and body language first and then the sign language helped with a more complex or deeper communication, I never realized how little I paid attention to those things.

I got use to doing that when I went to a foreign country where I didn't speak the language very well, You really do rely on gestures, body language, facial expressions a lot, even after 20 years living in a different country, I still find that it helps me and is second nature to pay attention to those, even though now I understand the language.
