I don’t think people truly understand how hard this is. I had hearing loss as a child and the tissue in my middle ears started to die. It smelled like death for years, even with tubes. After surgery, I have remarkable hearing, but with some difficulties. I can hear things some people can’t and can’t hear things that some people can. I speak very low, from what people say, but sound muffled and loud to myself. As much as I try, I could not sing like those in my family. It is frustrating. I don’t even know how this girl could do this… even with muscle memory. She is a savant.

When I first watched this it was in a Golden Buzzer compilation and thus had zero context. I thought it was just another talented singer-songwriter. But then I saw the sign-language interpreter...and then it hit me like a truck: "Wait a minute, she's DEAF!? WOW!!!". I mean, can you blame me!? The way she sings and plays so effortlessly despite not being able to hear a thing is simply PHENOMENAL! I LOVE YOU MANDY HARVEY! I WISH YOU EVERYTHING GOOD IN THIS UNIVERSE AND MORE! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Mandy: I love this story and your voice. You're a great role model for my students. I also have a connective tissue disease that stole my hearing (some 38 years ago today) ... but in only one ear. With only a few adaptations, I have been able to teach music. I consider myself lucky and blessed. (The connective tissue disease has been a lot harder than the hearing loss.)

fun fact: she does that by matching vibrations. if you play the note c3 on an instrument and hum the note c#3, you can feel the clashing frequencies. when you match the note it almost feels soothing to the throat
