An old technique my grandparents taught us in the 1970s was to count using coins. I take it to the next level with my kids and have them count in silver kennedy's, walkers, and bennys while asking them who is on the coins. My 6 year old knows all three along with the obverses for either eagle or liberty bell while the 3 year old knows they are silver at least and loves playing with the coins.

I have to agree with Yankee on the price of gold being the key to whether or not there is enough gold in the world to "back the currency". Most assuredly, there IS enough gold to back the currencies IF the price is high enough. Price is the key for ALL supply vs. demand issues, even those of gold and silver. But this would require all of the major nations / economies of the world to agree to a new gold standard AND it's price. As with the old gold and silver standard in years past, such a standard for currencies also would have to be redeemable with paper and gold being exchanged for each other on a uniform basis with the citizens. If they agree that gold is to be $100k in price, then they have to pay $100k to buy it too. We don't live in a vacuum, folks, so a lot of communication and dickering would be needed before such a standard could be agreed upon. Is that possible? Yes, if they all want that to happen... and No if they do not want it to happen. So, the bottom line could be that it all depends on what agreements can be made and adhered to.

gold is up over $1400Can since I started stacking, I can't see paying that much more for the same thing so have started stacking silver[over 600oz's so far], the US interest rates dropping, business earnings coming up, black out period for large % of stocks also coming soon....I think the shit starts hitting the fan Wednesday from what I've heard...we'll see...all are good for the price of gold :)

Revaluing gold is not an outlandish idea. Roosevelt did it in 1933 after his executive order requiring everyone to turn in their gold. They got something like $20.67 per coin and it was revalued to $35 per ounce. It could easily happen again. The govt could low-ball you on the price you get and then revalue to a much higher price. The reason the govt probably wouldn't do it is because physical gold holders are a very small niche. Better to go after paper assets like 401(k)'s, money market accounts, etc. Those are easy to raid.

From what I understand the new BRICS currency will be called a unit and will be backed by 40% gold and the rest in a basket of currencies in the BRICS countries. I wonder if 40% backing in gold is enough to make it work.
