@@markseymour747 Nice. I would highly recommend getting oil analysis performed on each of those new fluids if you haver put 2 years on it. If these sealed bearings were not replaced, or if they were replaced with out the special speed ratings, then they will be producing a lot of iron ore in the gear box that will cause the new speed sensor to fail or the bearings themselves will fail causing shafts to come loose and grenade the box beyond repair. Also, the analysis will let you know if you have fluid leaking between the two. That special double lip seal that I have in my kit is not available through ferrari. I found a guy trying to sell them on ebay for $250 a piece. I can get them for around $75, but the best thing to do is just order the whole kit. It comes with everything.

Hey there great info! I have a 2021 F8 Tributo, which I assume has the same potential issues down the road. What would you recommend as an interval to change the gearbox and clutch fluids?
@HollywoodMechanic Жыл бұрын
Most important service item is checking fluid levels at every oil change to catch any internal issues. Clutch fluid should be changed 5 years or 30k miles of routine ownership driving. Gear oil every 2 years, 10k miles. If the car is being driven hard at every drive cycle, I would replace the clutch oil at 10k miles and gear oil at 5k at the minimum with oil analysis being performed to determine wear and subsequently develop service plan with this driving style/environment. If it's being tracked, take oil sample before and after each track session to determine the wear during that session and subsequently develop a service plan based on that information.

Is it my understanding that every 6 to 8 years or so we need to do this repair? If so, wouldn't that be a flaw in the design? Reason I'm asking this is because I'm in the market to purchase an FF and want to know how I can verify this at the time of purchase. If I have a PPI done will this be an item that will pop up so I can discuss w/ the seller. Any visual signs that can be seen or caught before purchase? Assuming you buy the car and drive it home and I get those error codes would ruin I'd say anyones day. Seems a drivetrain warranty for the entire ownership of these cars are a must. Thanks for the knowledge and info. :D

Well, you'll be spending millions in legal fees to prove it, and really, seal and gasket failure in any engine or trans is not considered component design failure. You might be able to more quickly and cheaply be able to win a suit about incorrect service schedule since ferrari never recommends changing the fluid but BMW has never lost a suit with their gearboxes and they have been recommending lifetime trans oil since the 90s. It's really lying to the customer and causing the gearboxes to fail more quickly. As far as signs, I've already given them: 8 years old. If it's 8 year or older and has not had a new gearbox installed already, do the rebuild, or at least test the oils looking for signs of major component failure (eg iron for ring and pinion, manganese for clutch ). Just be ready to pay $20k to "service rebuild". The gear box

I have a 2012 SLS AMG, when the gearbox temperature reaches 28-29F it downshifts and sets the gearbox into neutral and i have to switch off and on the car again. The gearshifts are smooth and fine so it might be a sensor ? I changed the gearbox fluid at Mercedes but it didn’t fix the problem. The gearbox was changed by Mercedes by the previous owner so it has around 30,000mi, and 7 years old
@HollywoodMechanic Жыл бұрын
29 F it should never be. Just sitting outside should be higher than this. I think you mean celcius? But even that is a low value. You need a good technician that knows the gearbox to use the Xentry scan tool and determine what's going on. I can't help you through the KZbin comments section and even a phone call would be a waste of both our time. You won't know the answers to the questions I have.

@HollywoodMechanic Жыл бұрын
@@faisalalshamsi5521 I have put some thought into your gearbox. I must say, I have very little experience with the Mercedes set up. I only rebuild the Ferrari versions because the Mercedes dealers will sell you a complete rebuilt unit for about what I charge to rebuild the units, so why would they buy from me when for the same price they can buy from the dealer? So keep this in mind. There are definitely software changes between Ferrari and Mercedes as well as some hardware (probably in the cooling system and the differential). With that in mind, what I see when these gearboxes kick into neutral is usually a pressure or clutch temperature fault. You should have codes that help you determine what is going on stored in the transmission module. What I see more of, when the car gets to operating temp, is skipping gears due to incorrect gear position sensor data. A lot of these sensors only malfunction at temperature. Those sensors I have for even mercedes, but you would need to calibrate the gear position sensors that you replace and I don't know if that is an option with anything other than Xentry. The Mercedes dealers are able to replace the Shift panel that contains new sensors, but I believe the new panel comes with a "marriage" file that is uploaded into the gearbox module and tells the car the acceptable positions pre written. On the Ferrari's, I can teach in the positions. I have not tried on Mercedes. All of this to say, carefully view all of your sensors with live data when you are testing and the fault should show itself. Beyond this info, all i can do is look at the car myself which you would have to ship the car here. Or you can just buy a rebuilt box from Mercedes for around $14000 which is a good deal because it needs a rebuild after so much time anyway. Good luck.

I just got P192D code on my 458, arrrgghh, what are your thoughts in regards to the code ?
@HollywoodMechanic2 жыл бұрын
That's low pressure for the CCP. So either a pressure sensor, an o ring, or the paper gaskets leaking. Also, you could have lost DCT fluid causing a lack of fluid to pump. First thing to check is both fluid levels. If they are not significantly low, Ferrari would recommend you replace the CCP for around $10k in parts, or if it's a pressure sensor, then they have started to sell them for $1k each. Regardless, whatever is leaking is the first thing to go, but you should expect more gaskets and sensor failures. My kit comes with all the sensors and o rings and speed and temp sensors and even 4 of the bearings that are the most common to fail.

Everyone said it will last the "life of the car". Is this true? Or do I have a "rebuild" coming in my future? I change the 2 fluids in the transmission every 3yrs, and all my other fluids every year. thx!!!!
@HollywoodMechanic7 ай бұрын
8 to 10 years they start having issues. Really depends on the driving style. Changing the fluid regularly is a good strategy. Using a better oil like red line or motul seems to be a good choice but we'll see in 10 years if it extends the life of the sensors. Definitely keep up with your oil analysis to monitor wear.

2016 Ferrari 488GTB 26k mile, gearbox 7DCL750 Getrag Issue: P1800 Parklock. Low Hydraulic pressure Ferrari suggest replacing SAP. Cost labor $3800 drop/open troubleshoot and reinstall, plus any part they find to cause the issue, which may or may not be the SAP I did the gearbox oil change and it worked fine for about 3 month.
@HollywoodMechanic2 жыл бұрын
If I understand this correctly, you received the P1800 fault and then did a fluid change and the fault went away for 3 months? If so, the hydraulic pressure used to control all the actions taken in the gearbox (except cooling diff and gears) comes from the DCT or clutch pump and fluid. If you received a fault and then changed the fluid and the fault went away, then more than likely you have a leak of DCT fluid into the gear oil portion of the gearbox. Most likely from the special seals of the DCT cooled bearing in the gearbox (i describe this bearing in the video). When the DCT oil gets low, the DCT fluid begins to foam and cavitate the pump causing a loss of pressure. The hydraulic actuator for the park lock is the furthest item in the hydraulic circuit from the DCT pump, so it could be the reason this is the first fault you are seeing. When you originally found the fault, the proper course of action would have been to check fluid levels on both the gear oil and DCT. At this time you would have seen gear oil high and dct low and should immediately have stopped driving the car to have it disassembled and leak fixed. You should now take this action. Ask Ferrari to check both levels according to the manual (with engine running, all doors closed, parking brake on, brake pedal depressed, reverse gear selected, at 60C for DCT oil). It should be obviously over full in the gear oil side. This means the gear oil will be severely burnt (due to over fill condition) and the viscosity in the range of 10cSt or less (should be at 14, but DCT oil is 7 so when it leaks through, gear oil gets very thin). This will have caused some advanced wear on the pinion and ring gear but as long as no long hard drives were taken under these conditions it is most likely fine. I would recommend rebuilding the gear box fully at this time, but if you decide to go for the cheapest possible repair, Ferrari will have to replace the mid case or the special seals (they might be offering this seal for sale now, but if not, of course I have custom ones made). This is a level 3 DCT repair (same as speed sensor) and is the most advanced. Not all dealers have techs authorized to do this repair. The overfill condition and overheat condition will have wasted the sealed bearings in the mid plate and rear cover as well as the increased pressure and submersion of the bearings in a thin hot oil will have washed out grease required to cool the bearings. If you do find that both fluids are at the proper level and have distinctly different colors (Gear will be brown or blackish, dct yellow/clear), then there is a SAP fault. This costs $6500 from Ferrari. I have a rebuild kit for the SAP for about $1200, but Ferrari will not attempt this repair, and will only replace the unit.
