Could have removed clutch assembly then started engine to confirm if it’s clutch or rod noise. Sounds like clutch needs serviced anyway.

Good job! I was given a 2005 Grizzly last year from a buddy at church. Spent about $1400 on it including new tires and a winch. Has a 5-valve head; put in a 686 piston and cylinder--it's DANGEROUS now! Love it!

I'd check out the timing chain inside of it to. It could be stretched out causing that knocking chattering noise to. There's three things to check out on it.

Yeah those Yamaha Grizzlies and the Kodiaks are some solid quads hands down. The first real quad that I rode when I was only 6 was a 2004 Kodiak 450. I grew up riding it on my parents land, and we did a lot of woods clearing for trails and campgrounds, so when you were riding it and brought the chainsaw out, that brought back a bunch of great memories for me. My Dad and I used to haul some massive branches with the Kodiak, that thing can pull way more than you'd imagine lol. We'd tye a chain around the tree and to the hitch on the quad. Was super fun. I'll never forget how much fun I had on that thing

Oil is meant to be poured with the opening at the top, so the bottle doesn’t gulp air, but most people pour it wrong anyway for some reason.

I have a04 Grizzly 660. I love it,remember when looking at your oil level you do not screw the dipstick in ,it is taken with out screwing it in just pushed in until you get to the threads. I did it wrong for years myself. Ran it low for years.

I bought a Honda 350 years ago with "engine noise" , yes it did sound similar to what you have. The muffle was rotted inside resonating the noise. New $100 aftermarket muffler and great bike made 3k on that one

That's the needle bearing knocking on the connecting rod is knocking. From that burnt motor oil. It sounds like A bad needle bearing to me Joe. I'd rebuild it anyways. Cause it will eventually go out on it. Maybe not right away though. The clutches do make noises on those to. That's A rod bearing knock grinding noise inside of that engine. I'd tear it down.,an replace it with A new one. A trick on that clutch needle to bearing pack it with marine grease lightly. Watch the difference in the sound.

That machine averaged 10.2 mph during use. Early in the video still, but I agree, sounds similar to the clutch sound my 2005 Sportsman 500HO makes.

Good job and I think you're right. A rod knock would have gotten worse under a load. My Polaris sportsman make a lot of noise as well but starts and runs like a monster.

As you're riding, I'm hoping you'll drain the oil when you get back to the garage and see if it's got silvery streaks. If it's good, you can just throw it back in. I use those Reynolds disposable aluminum foil baking pans if I intend to reuse the oil.

Those 450s are known for the valve springs binding up and causing Cam and rocker wear just like the older 350 Warrior and Wolverine engines.

Take some WD-40 "dry lube" and hit the primary and secondary clutches with the spray (cover off of course) while the engine is idling/quad is parked. Pretty good chance the noise completely goes away. That same exact noise is very common on Polaris RZR's with the belt drive set up. They need to be dry lubed every couple rides to keep that noise down.

even a long screwdriver is a big help in finding a noise. Put your ear against the end of the handle, and the tip against the engine. Follow the noise to it's loudest position.

Those tie wraps you cut for the gas tank heat shield were reusable lol. They have a little lever to release them. I’m going to refer to as the butcher from here on out 😂. You do awesome work though and love your channel.

My father in law has a 2005 kodiak 400 in the same camp. He bought it new. It has a popping happening and idle issue this season. I am thinking carb or valve adjustment. Other than that it has been a good quad. I had a 2004 kodiak 400 also that I bought new but ended up selling it in 2012. I like the kodiak better than the Arctic Cat 500 that I have now.

If that quad has the 660cc motor it’s one of the best motors that Yamaha has ever made, they used it for many years in there side by sides. I’ve had several of the Yamaha 660cc 4wheelers and I absolutely love them, currently I own one of these it’s been very reliable. nice to see you finally get a great deal, congratulations.

Did you check the clutch weights? As well some people add a washer shim to the clutch to sort of gear the clutch lower. My guess is one the clutch weight slides need replacing maybe.

I had 2 of those Grizzlies. You had the clutch cover off, should have removed the primary cover and primary. Then start it to verify the noise isn't internal. Both of my Grizzlies didn't knock like yours. They tick but not that loud. Also, when you remove the foot rest, also remove the 4 or 6 bolts holding that foot rest assembly so your not fighting it when removing the clutch cover. They are great utility quads.

Check exhaust baffle. I have had noise in the motor that sounds like a rod and found the muffle r was the cause.

I had a motor that made a sound like a little end knock. It turned out to be a collection of tiny holes on the exhaust right near the head.

Yamaha Primary clutch requires grease. So many people dont do the proper maintenance. Including you !!! haha ! Yamahas are known for weak wet clutches especially if non Wet clutch oil is used. Ive seen it many times.

I've owned several Yamahas with the Ultramatic CVT and they are bullet proof but that noise isn't normal. Not sure why you didn't pull the primary off while you were in there? Pull the screws off the cover and I bet all the roller weights are popcorn dry. They need grease. They don't work like a normal CVT that runs dry and uses finger weights.

To not just pull the top end to check is a bad move but also a lot of people who don't know any better and go by what this dude says, thinks its fine are going to have a machine of their own blow up because of bad information. We are definitely in the age where being a back yard youtube mechanic pays more than being a factory certified technician who makes sure they are doing things correctly.

I have a 2009 and most of the noise comes from the heatschielding(bolds breaking). The only thing i hate on the maschine is the rearbrake. The cable from the footbreak fils with dirty water and than fails.

About time you picked up a machine that you didn't have to dig deep into it. Nice one! Last year I bought a $140 electric power washer off of Amazon for my 41 foot sailboat. Works great. Used it twice now. If I was doing something like what you do or working on cars a lot, I'd buy a gasoline powered one with high water flow volume, which is the key, to removing heavy debris, not just, high pressure, but water volume flow too. It would pay for itself in a couple dozen uses. And thanks for making theses videos, Joe. Happiness to you and your family.

Bought a ninja 250 earlier this year that had a horrible knock. Turns out the dealer who diagnosed it as a bad engine failed to put one of the spark plugs in and so it was running on one cylinder and wheezing out the other. Popped a new plug in and rode it for a couple months before selling it. Just can’t trust anyone.
