Hi there everybody, thanks for joining me today. One of the most difficult situations you’re going to deal with in the workplace is backstabbing coworkers or workers who are underneath you. It’s a reality unfortunately, but it is something that you have to deal with. So I wanted to discuss some ways and some things to do that can address this in your workplace, whether it is team members that you oversee, or just coworkers in your environment. The first thing to pay attention to is your own behavior. You want to make sure that it is not a reflection, that they are mirroring the behavior that you are demonstrating. So if you’re a leader, and your team members are backstabbing each other, make sure that you’re not talking about other team members to those particular team members. That can encourage backstabbing behavior and condone it with people. Similarly in a coworker role. If you are talking behind somebody’s back, then that let’s somebody know that that’s OK behavior for you. So first and foremost, in dealing with backstabbers, is make sure that you’re not perpetuating it. And certainly if you’re in a leadership role, that they’re not mirroring behavior that you’re already demonstrating. The big thing that you want to do with backstabbers is you want to call them out on it. So you actually confront them on a specific thing that was brought up, “Hey, I know that you brought that to the attention of our boss, I’d really appreciate it if you brought it to me next time. That causes nothing but problems, I’d rather fix it myself than have you go to them.” Similarly in a coworker role, you can call that out. Give Sue a chance to address that particular issue before you just bring it to me. We want to be working together as a team.” And reference teamwork. Everybody understands that concept and the benefits of teamwork. So use that at the “why” behind your coaching efforts on that. The reason that this is so powerful, as far as calling it out, is that the reason that people backstab is because they lack the confidence to bring this up to the person in the first place. Or they’re playing some sort of political game on things. But either way, it is a very passive thing, and it lacks confidence as far as their behavior is concerned. So by calling it out, you naturally dissuade them from doing it again. Many backstabbing issues also have a kernel of truth to them. Lots of it is gossip, but the last thing you want to do is dismiss that behavior entirely, cause often times there is that kernel of truth. It may not be as bad as they’re making it out to be, but there may be something to it. So make sure it’s not, the backstabbing isn’t a reflection of your behavior. Make sure you call the person out on it, but make sure you also do an analysis of the situation to make sure there isn’t that kernel of truth behind whatever it is that they’re saying. Thanks so much everybody, have a great day.
