You're certainly right about it being disheartening for beginners. It took me over a year to get my first flush and now I'm at the 18 month mark with a failure rate of under 50%... Which makes me happy. I'll be very happy if I get it down to 20%. As I now have my own liquid culture 'lines' at least I can comfort myself with the fact that failures don't actually cost much in cash-money terms. And it's all good fun anyway. Appreciate the continued encouragement, PGT. First time gourmet grower here, and I ended up with contaminated spore syringes from what was supposed to be a reliable vendor. Initially lost a dozen pint jars to contam. Wasn't until I got some agar that I was able to get some healthy spawn started. Everything is running smoothly now. So for any other newbies, don't be afraid to branch out to agar, G2G, or making your own LCs. I'm a complete newbie and have had nothing but success since I did.
@sheeeitmayn43843 жыл бұрын
Most spore syringes are gonna have some contamination. Just part of the game my friend. My advice to you if tonspawn your syringes to agar THEN transferring clean agar to your grain jars. The more agar you inoculate, the greater your chances for success. My first grow I poured and inoculated 11 cups, and only needed 1 to start my first flush. The others are out away as back up in case my jars get contamination. Like he said in the video, the more you increase your odds, the better. You are playing a game where microscopic organisms are involved, organisms you cannot see or detect normally so its honestly all part of the game I wouldn't blame your source, although I'd have no way of knowing if they are legit or not but contams are normal with spore syringes.

@pheresy13672 жыл бұрын
@@sheeeitmayn4384 Well said... That's why PF Tek is so perfect for using spore syringes directly into jars. They are tiny jars. If you do enough of them, you will get some winners while expecting some contaminated ones. In that small size jar, contams will hide but be overtaken remaining hidden when the jar is quickly colonized (because of the massive amount of spores). The PF cake can fruit multiple times without you ever even knowing of the hidden contamination. The problems manifest when you try that on a larger scale or use that grain to innoculate more jars. Anything larger than PF Tek requires learning some agar to make sure you are starting with clean mycelium. Or, you are relying on luck for success. No Pour Method. (look it up on Shroomery) I found that in the beginning with agar, you can start out doing a "no pour method" with the screw-on PP food containers (small size Tasty Plates?), from the grocery store. They work great. I pour unsterilized agar into them, close them up loosely, then pressure cook them. They hold up well in the PC, and then you don't have to worry about contamination happening during the pouring process (because they are already poured). Watch out, the lids must also be PP-5 plastic or they WILL melt in the PC. I resorted to this method after buying contaminated disposable plates from Amazon. You get full control over the sterilization process. Just my .02

Thanks for the video, PGT. In my experience, contamination is usually a result of too wet conditions. I also never recommend anyone mist their casing layers, before the 3rd flush, as this greatly increases contam risk. The casing layer should have enough moisture to produce several flushes.

3:13 trichoderma scared the shit outta me so I called poison control and I learned that it's really safe actually. We deal with it all the time in our food and other parts of agriculture. The only thing you really need to worry about is that it can cause similar effects to black mold where it would make it hard to breathe. This is something to worry about if you're immune compromised or if you have some sort of breathing issue such as asthma. You do wanna do what Philly tells you when it comes to growing mushrooms.

After my 1st 8 half-pint jars of that round I had zero contamination until the third flush on both of my shoeboxes. Then I did your broke boi Tek spawned to CVG and never looked back to PF for all of its labor and time. Got an Instant Pot and I’m about to try Popcorn spawned to CVG. I’ll add that I’ve only used 5 spore syringes in the last 2 years for the projects (I medicate solo and infrequently, and gave half my fruits to friends). I look forward to trying some more of your tutorials, and thank you for providing so much knowledge in exceptionally easy to digest tutorials.

To other beginners, I’ve done everything multiple times, now. My contamination rate is about one out of six. When I had green mold, it was in my mono tub, which was already completely colonized and ready to start fruiting, so I tried to save it by cutting it out as instructed in another video and soaked it with alcohol. I cut out more than in this example and the next day green mold was spreading again. It just didn’t work so it’s better to throw it out (IMO). Also, in the beginning, I didn’t want to😮mess with agar because it seemed like an extra expense and extra time. Plus, and everything worked so great the first time. My first time around I used an easy to grow species and the uncle Ben’s rice tech and everything worked like textbook perfect. There was no contamination, it went very quickly and everything was fine. So the next time I tried with PE nothing was textbook. It took forever, everything got contaminated and I learned what I consider to be a valuable lesson now. Now I’m spending a little more money to grow things out on agar. Or I’m using a grain jar that I can see into. This gives me a little bit more control and I can get rid of things without losing the whole project if I have multiple grain jars or plates of agar. The one time I got the green mold in my mono tub that was already colonized, I had the idea that I would ditch the liner and clean everything out really well to save the mono tub, but in the end, I just didn’t want to risk getting another infection of mold so I threw it out and bought another mono tub. I’m sharing all this with you guys because I’ve tried saving as much as I can when there’s contamination and after trying that now I’m telling you guys that I think it’s better to have many different projects going so you can just completely discard anything that is contaminated because it doesn’t seem to work. Good luck!

@@Andre-oc7gg Easy brother, appreciate the reply. I'm in the UK sadly and pressure cookers are through the roof. I plan to be doing unicorn bags then spawning to bulk CVG. I plan on setting up a grow tent with 2x 4 tier racks full of trays (I plan on spreading the love 😉) and also plan on setting up a 1mx1m grow tent strictly for inoculation and hopefully agar work. Plan on having my laminar cabinet in there along with a genuine Hepa filter air purifier I plan on running for an hour before doing any work in there... First doing a 70% ISO wipe down of absolutely everything,then have the air purifier running and the laminar cabinet. I've found an awesome guy on etsy who sells pre-sterilised grain bags. We've become good friends and he's going to actually help me build my laminar cabinet and while saving to put that whole tent together he's offered to sterilise grain for me for free, I just have to buy ingredients and pay for shipping and he's happy to do me 10-12 bags of millet at a time and ship them to me, even happy to inoculate them as he also sells cultures and is happy for me to send him cultures to use for me. Couldn't ask for a nicer guy to mentor me, he's been growing for over 15yrs and had thousands of positive reviews on the products he sells so he definitely knows what he's doing. I'm also in the process of learning to cook up DMT as well to make Vape carts and changa... I'm really eager to try Micro-dosing to see if I can cut down or get off the meds I've been on for years. I think the hardest part is going to be setting up the 'clean room' tent... As I don't think I'll have too many issues once I get the inoculated bags back and they colonise, from what I've heard and read if you can get to that stage and spread to bulk in the cleanest environment you can, the mycelium is pretty hardy and stable once established so while I'm working on saving up for a decent pressure cooker and building my flow cabinet I have access to ready to use grain so I can get growing ASAP and slowly build the set up how I want it. I have a 246sqft room that thankfully is hard floored and will be perfect to set up a large tent for my fruiting chamber and then a small tent as my 'clean room'. Been advised to shave, shower wear a tyvek suit and mask straight out the shower when doing anything like agar work or working with open bags. Also gonna be starting with what's considered some of the easiest and most forgiving strains like GT's and B+ but would also like to try and grow some medicinal strains and not just psychoactive strains (though TBH that's obviously why I'm doing it! I absolutely can't stand the taste of mushrooms 😂). What kinda strains are you looking at growing yourself and what set up are you planning? Bulk substrate? , BRF cakes? Would be cool to keep in contact and see how our plans play out and our journey to shroom-success. Much love and peace brother! Namaste 🙏

Philips makes a table lamp that emits a strong UV-C light for a set amount of time. I think it’s 15, 30 and 90 minutes. Trichoderma is a really good stuff. It is super invasive and it is antagonistic to pathogenic fungi, it can clean up plant compost really well, making it much safer to use; so guys don’t dump it up. Also quite often Trichoderma has ability to decompose cellulose, and using it alongside with worms can give you amazing results, and you will end up with a super rich compost much more faster. I even made DIY CO2 bags with Trichoderma viride, for small scale cannabis growing, yeah trichoderma also feeds on powdery mildew, that makes even more sense to collect the sample even if your mushroom substrate is fucked up. Thanks for the video!

It's often added to products sold for gardeners to use, like coir sold in those compressed bricks and other soil treatments, as it has the benefits you say. People need to read the labels of coir etc products to see if it's deliberately included. Or buy coir sold in pet shops for lizard/snake habitat, it won't have Tric added. I found out the hard way, used cheap garden centre coir bricks to make my first substrate, and just as fruiting started, so did the Tric. I switched coir source (and boiled the water I used for misting, as I'm on tank water and it could have contamination in it) and have had a lot fewer issues with Tric and other contam.

Also one idea i would love to watch would be experiment type video’s! Like i have no idea what would happen if you mixed different spores syringes toether and then fruited them but i’d love to watch a video about it!

Fungus compete with each other. It would very likely fail if they were trying to grow in the same container. That competition is one main reason everything needs to be kept separate.

Hey man, how about UV sterilizing lamp? I'm thinking: sterilize jars with grains. Put them in a large plastic bag where my hands can do the job. Put a UV lamp inside the bag for some time. Inoculate the spores into the jars inside the bag... profit
@BillyHill3604 ай бұрын
My last 2 attempts have been no-go on 2 syringes. 1 broke boi tek which ended in a sweet wet funk for 2 of 4 jars, and the 2 spawned jars turned trichs. 1 popcorn tek pre-spawn very strong and fast mycelium, but ended shortly after spawn to bulk due to cobweb.

4:33 that would be a dirty trich 😮💨😮💨😮💨 I do wonder if low pressure spritzing the trich with droplets of alcohol can help reduce airborne spores before even handling the tub. And maybe, like you said isolate that tub in a different area.

As a student who is currently studying on antimicrobial substances and microorganism, I think you should try adding antibiotic into your agar, broth or grain jar. For 1 litter of agar or broth, you can add 30 mg Gentamicin or 50 mg Chloramphenicol before sterilizing. These 2 antibiotics will kill most of the common bacteria but not kill your mushroom. The disadvantages are that they just kill MOST of the microorganisms. I can not give the exact number but I can say they will kill at least 90% of the bacteria and do NOT kill any molds/yeasts. But even that, they still help a lot. The two antibiotics are usually made in form of ear and eye drop for human and pets, they are commercially available. The excipients for those products are often types of alcohol, when diluted into the agar or broth, they should not harm your mushroom.
@cosmefulanito8313 жыл бұрын
Any kind of alcohol may harm your mycelium roughly, both Gentamicin and Chloramphenicol can be obtained on waterbased solutions. Thanks for this information
@jonathanharris25703 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea, I’d be worried about the bacteria that’s healthy for the mycelium getting killed off along with everything else.
@lethanhtoan16743 жыл бұрын
@@cosmefulanito831 It is true that alcohols in general are harmful to microorganisms, fungi included, but the thing is the concentration plays the huge role here. For the most powerful alcohols, which are ethanol and propanol, the concentration of 40 degree and lower is significantly weaker than the higher concentration of the same alcohol. So finding a pure, concentrated source of antibiotics is needed. I can say 100 ml of product for 1 litter of agar is in the safe zone.
@lethanhtoan16743 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanharris2570 As far as I know, magic mushroom does not need to live with any other bacterium or fungus. There may be a type of bacterium that is healthy for the mushroom but people don't know about them yet. I am not a spore or liquid culture provider so I don't know if they mix some other microorganisms into the culture or not, but from many videos of Philly, you can see he tried to get the purest piece of mycelium before growing it on the agar. If there was any other thing in there, it would appear on the agar after several days, and he always select the clean cultures and seems like doesn't have any problem growing them. So don't worry.

Just dont drop bacteria in your agar ;)

dude hellyeahhh philly good video! def good for starting growers and og growers who feel sad after getting contam. I have a big video suggestion! I think you should start a series of videos diving into shroomery and looking at posts that are asking really common question any grower has and giving it a answer that people can really use rather then the 1000000 of answer that may or may not work/help people. thanks for all the videos dude will keep up the good work!

Hello and thank you for all your wonderful content. I have learned a lot from your channel! Where did you get the stainless shelf/tray things you use in front of your flow hood? I’ve been trying to find something like that but don’t know where to look. Also, does peroxide kill trich?
@whisperslow3 жыл бұрын
Curious why it has been said for the contam to be buried outside. What happens if mushrooms begin to grow there? Are they dangerous? How do you know if it's contam in the mycelium versus bruising?
