IBS affects over 11% of the global population, (that’s one in every 9 people you meet!!) so let’s not be embarrassed about it! I want this channel to be a safe, open and kind place for people dealing with IBS. We’re far from alone, so let’s ask questions, share advice and feel better together xx
▽ What are FODMAPs?
The term FODMAP is an acronym, derived from "Fermentable, Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols”. They are short carbohydrates found in lots of healthy foods, which the bacteria in your intestines will break down, producing gas in the process.
For unclear reasons, some people are particularly sensitive to this and experience painful and embarrassing symptoms such as bloating, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, constipation and fatigue. FODMAP restriction has been found to improve symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID).
▽ What is a Low-FODMAP Diet?
The Low-FODMAP diet usually involves carefully cutting the down the amount of FODMAPs you consume over a day and at one time for 2-6 weeks until your symptoms resolve or at least become manageable. Then you “re-challenge” each type of FODMAP individually to see how sensitive you are to them. Thankfully most people can tolerate some or all of the FODMAPs at certain levels or combinations.
▽ Is it forever?
NO! From this feedback, you can reintroduce foods in a way that won’t set off your symptoms. Your tolerance will likely improve over time, so you can always retest foods when you feel up to it.
▽ Resources For Vegan Low-FODMAPers
These are some two things I’ve found to be invaluable since starting the low-FODMAP diet.
The first is the official app* from The Monash University. It’s the easiest and most up-to-date way to check what foods are A-okay and how big your portion size can be. Measurements come in grams, as well as "cups", which is great as a brit!
itunes.apple.c...
The second is the ONLY vegan cookbook* I’ve found among the masses of meat-filled low-FODMAP ones. Admittedly it's not totally my style of cooking but it has been a great inspiration and it is very informative.
"Low-Fodmap and Vegan: What to Eat When You Can't Eat Anything" By Jo Stepaniak
amzn.to/2yq9BWp
Thirdly, the lowFODMAP vegan stock cubes make cooking sooooo much easier! And they don’t cost more than normal ones either, woop. amzn.to/2NuT93f

@@serpentinedigio I’ve been there too but it does get better I promise. It’s worth going to see a doctor, I found out on top of IBS I had SIBO which was making my symptoms a lot worse. I found out a lot of people with IBS also have this so if your symptoms are really bad it’s worth visiting a doctor. Also maybe talk to a professional, I did CBT which helped a lot because my anxiety was off the roof and that messed with my stomach a lot.

I really resonated with your comment on not eating two hours before a commute. That is the BIGGEST trigger for me. I have had incidents of running off busses and almost not making it that were near traumatic and made me nervous to take long bus rides. I need to check and see if there is a bathroom on board or nearby at stops (psycho...maybe but gives me clarity) and I would rather sit hungry and famished than worry that my stomach is full and is vulnerable.

This is exactly how I feel. Even a 10 mins ride is stressful for me. I used to eat only once a day because my ibs is stressing me everyday for a couple of months

Fasting and time restricted feeding can very good for health (check research and consult with doc or nutritionist before trying). Perhaps, you could adopt time restricted feeding (aka intermittent fasting) and plan your travels for the hours of the day in which you are in a fasted state. For instance, you eat dinner at 8pm, then nothing more until the following day at noon. Your morning commute, at least, should be a good bit easier. I've, personally, fasted through long travel days or on days of long road trips; it works well for me. I don't always feel particularly energetic as a result, but it's far better than having an episode... The difficult trade-offs we make.

Whenever I've anxiety or nervous or being emotional, here it comes again. Handling two at once isn't really easy, especially when it feels like your bowel is twisting like all around. Worse is you're not at home. It's just so horrible and there's nothing much you could do about it except for looking out at your diet and trying to keep your emotion at bay.

Slightly off topic but let's be real. Always keep a extra set of clothes/ baby wipes, etc. in car or in locker at work. I know it's a real embarrassing thing to even discuss but if you're having a bad day at work or you're in a flare and you happen to have an accident it's going to save you the embarrassment.

Having an ibs in a school with a bathroom that is very far and closed so no one goes and when u want yo go u need to first search for the keys is a really big struggle for me. Today at a test I had a huge flair up it was so embarrassing . I had I just had a terrible test because of this I didn't focus or anything and I told the teacher I needed to go to the bathroom he said no so I had an argument with him and he let me go which was extremely embarrassing (cause no one ever goes ) .this just makes it so unfair other just pass the exam comfortably while I have to struggle for the entire 2hour and try too hard to focus . I did not focus at all and wrote whatever my anxiety was over the roof . At the end the teacher told me I had a phobia of the exam . But honestly it was just about my anxiety and my stomach, it wasn't about the exam lol . Idk how I'm gonna take any exam from now on my ibs has intensified a lot because of my anxiety.

Suffered for years however was too embarrassed to tell anyone which then lead to Anxiety etc - which caused a vicious cycle. Basically, in my experience communication is vital and understand what foods are your triggers are key; I used a blood test to determine what foods I'm intolerant to (Coconut, lactose, egg white and wheat) which has helped tremendously. Also, avoid coffee - Good luck!

This is actually something I do quite often. Everytime I have to go somewhere or do something when I can't afford having a flare up. Also I took two diarrhea meds (equivalent to Imodium) as a precaution. They don't treat the problem, but "paralyze" the digestive system for a while. Works for me, but how long until it makes even more damage? And this is something my doctor told me to do, when I got diagnosed. I can't even drink water. I was told that diet has no affect on me (25% IBS patients don't get help changing diet, I'm one of those "lucky" few). Nutritionist only recommended getting diapers. So this is my life now and I must admit, it's really hard to find the motivation to exist sometimes. This life doesn't feel worth living in a constant fear and insecurity. Always either hungry, thirsty or in pain. I hope you find some better solutions

@@Heli.H.P. i always take imodium too. Everyday or every other day just to help me feel normal. It's so hard to work when you constantly having a diarrhoea. But you're right taking that medicine can cause damaged. I feel a lil pain in my stomach every time i take that. But i don't have a choice. Diapers won't work especially if you're travelling everyday and sitting besides a bunch of people... I even lost some friends and life changing opportunities because of this. Get tested for other stuff too, I found out I had SIBO on top of IBS which was making my symptoms way worse. I did all of the tests of all that it could be because with IBS it’s not something that they can test, it’s kind of like well if you don’t have any of the other stuff then it’s IBS. The doctors don’t really know what it is and a lot of doctors just diagnose you with it instead of doing all of the proper tests. It’s ok to go and seek help, some people will downplay it but IBS can really lessen your quality of life. Hang in there you guys, you can do it! 💪🏼
